More "confirmation" from inside source: PSP2 is real, PS3 is getting a price cut, watch out at E3

And Insider Source strikes again! Although this, time, if this does turn out to be true, he would have hit the motherload! QJ tipster zen has sent us word that there are two great news rumors to fixate our minds on the rest of the day, nay, even week. One, the PSP2 is real and someone has actually held it in his hands for real (that would be Insider Source). Two, PS3 is getting a price drop, and that's gonna be U$ 100 off your back.

According to Insider Source, who relayed his "findings" back to One Last Continue, Sony reps met up with some people to show the next iteration of the PSP. They were, however, not allowed to play with it. Descriptions would reveal the following:
  • Rounded Edges
  • Dual analog sticks
  • Small sliding screen
  • Similar size and thickness to current PSP model
  • No UMD drive

PSP2? - Image 1
something like that... but not really...

Hmmm... these details have been seen before. It seems like it strongly concurs with previous reports on the specs of the PSP2. Also, it looks like Dave Perry might have actually be onto something when he said that the PSP2 won't have the UMD drive.

And there's more from Inside Source: "Patapon 2 is kinda the test drive, heard it said that if it fails massively, then the new PSP may put UMD back. Said they are working out bugs for release." So far, no other PSP title coming out for launch has been announced to be sold as a digital content.

Why Patapon 2? That's not so hard to guess either, given that the previous iteration was a huge hit. It would then make sense to use it as a gauge to see if people would still buy the game given its quality, or if the format would factor in their decision-making as consumers. But that's just my two cents.

Patapon 2 - Image 1 Just going about their own merry way...

The other interseting bit from Insider Source is that a US$ 100 price cut is indeed coming to the PS3, to be announced during E3. And get this, apparently, North American vendors have been given the heads up of this price drop as they've been said to be "stockpiling" the consoles in anticipation of this price drop.

And to all this, what does good ol' Sony have to say? Julie Han of Corporate Communications replied: "I don't know who your source is, but Sony is not in the business of answering rumors."

Well I say they can just have flat-out denied if there was no merit to it, yes? I say there's fire where there's smoke. And it smells like its headed to the E3.

Thanks again to zen for the tip!

These rumors surface seemingly on a weekly basis all from supposed "insiders". I'll believe it when or if it actually happens.

» hmm..

I guess there might not be a touch screen but, that may be for the better or worse (i was looking foward to a touch screen xmb and maybe some fun minigames, NOT FULL GAMES). Dual analog kicks ass though. Sliding touch screen is good - if its durable. Cheap adapter for UMD would be beneficial.

But sony should go a bit further with more ram, bigger flash memory, faster, better wi-fi, update internet browser, faster processor, and maybe better sound hardware. Not to leave out a descent camera for us in North America. Wouldnt mind paying an extra 30 bucks for all this.

Oh, and i got 300 waiting for that PS3...

that I only meant this only if this rumor doesn`t end up being a piece of sh*t like half of the other ones. And theres not really a big chance for that.

» i agree

if they dont make the inside of the psp2 better than ill just stick to my regular psp but they make it better im not gonna update like i did to my regular psp and it took me awhile to play homebrew on it. For the ps3 i dont think their gonna drop the price for it i mean for all it has to offer 400 is resonable i mean for blu ray on my 360 it would probably cost 100 dollars more.

by Darthsappy23 - 2009-04-21 14:21
» damn skippy

"stockpiling the consoles in anticipation of this price drop." i think if there is a price drop and sony actually does some good advertising for it, i think itll blow the 360 outta the water, but who knows. as for the psp2, if thats what its gunna look like, i think that i like it but i hope they have a decent size hdd in there if eveything is going to be digital DL. im not to big of a fan of that. id rather have a disc or something to show for it in case something bad happens. but i like the idea of 2 analog sticks. i think i like the sliding screen, id hope that they would have R1 R2 and L1 L2 but prolly not the room for the latter half.

by Metallica101 - 2009-04-21 14:44
» A few things

We all know a second analog stick was NEEDED in the next PSP, but announcing that it has round edges is pretty funny. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the current PSP have round edges?

I don't understand the benefit of a sliding touchscreen. It would be BEAST only if it hides the hardware controls when not slided out (like the concept of the PSP2 in the post). Obviously, UMD needs to go. They better not put the PSP2 out soon, especially with all these games coming out for the PSP. Also, the PSP2 needs an upgrade on everything the original PSP has, meaning that it needs better RAM, CPU, Internet browser (802.11n HECK YEA), USB 3.0, etc. Also, a camera ( i guess 4.0) would be nice. Does anyone think R2 L2 is good on a portable hand held? If no PS2 games are coming out by then, the PSP2 could have PS2 emulation (and PS1 emu for those elders :D). Now, price is a big question. If the time frame is in a world where no recession existed, then i guess it could be pretty high (400$ IS THE LIMIT!). They better not release this until the recession's over, or else they will lose sales. I'm not going to be surprised if Sony does the usual "Hard SDK at beginning, gets cheaper and easier later".

If you saw me in real life, this would be funny.

i know that the current cost for ps3 is high, and sony is kinda losing it for every piece of the hardware and situation is kinda fubar, but it's about time for a price cut(also a psthree ver would be nice too, minimalist ftb)

by TheDude - 2009-04-21 15:43
» lol to you ..

thinking that Onlive will own ps3,360! There are a few things that greatly diminish the chances of Onlive being successful. You need a broadband or dsl connection which many people and gamers don't have. Then there's lag, consoles can't even achieve completely lag free gameplay! Onlive has to stream the game too! The biggest hurdle is the huge install base already taken by ps3,360. Onlive would have too sell over 50mill to "own" ps3,360 which is just not gonna happen.

by Teivin - 2009-04-21 16:38
» Meh

Never a huge fan of rumors. They oft times end up false, and usually just cause people to get bitter when something 'does' happen.

A price cut wont really help the PS3 right now. It'd be a nice addition, but the people who can afford it have already bought or decided against it, and the people who can't afford it really wont benefit much from a price cut with current economics. Not to say it wouldn't be welcome, but damn, Sony should have gotten on that ball a while back.

As for that whole PSP2 thing, I cant see that coming out for a couple years yet. It took them how long just to do the slim, then the brite? Not to mention the sales on the system and its software isn't high enough to warrant the kind of development an entirely new design would require.

Oh well.

» Blah, blah, BS

Want proof that the psp2 isn't happening anytime soon? The other rumor in this article is a PRICE DROP for the PS3. Because people arn't willing to pay $400 for a home console AND a bluray player, of course they are willing to pay $300 for a portable gaming console. Nope!

Works perfect for me.

I do want the PS3 to get a price cut so it'll look more appealing to those who don't have one. If you ask me though, at the price it's at right now, I'd say it's the most affordable console on the market in terms for what you're getting. Even at a higher price it was still more affordable.

Until there are actually decent games for the PS3, even with the $100 price drop, its a rip off. The only exclusive titles on the PS3 worth a damn are little Big Planet and MGS4. Two games don't warrant paying out the ass for an over-hyped POS. At best, GoW3 will be a rental. Maybe when they make a new Parappa the PS3 will be worth having.

Seems like a Sony Fanboy dreamt a little bit too long....

@Prozac4545: Maybe if you would actually OPEN your eyes you would see the good games. For the current price of 399$, you get a HD console with unbeleiveable graphics, a complete media center, An Internet Browser, great and FREE online gameplay, a Full-HD Blu-Ray player and even a full PC when you install Linux. Show me anything comparable in the PC sector and we can talk on.

Just because every ***** is hyped like it's THE thing to own like on Xbox 360, it doesn't mean it's bad.

I've seen dozens of the GTA DLC, but not even ONE advertising for Killzone 2 on TV here in Germany. Seriously, a F.u.c.k.ing DLC has more ads than a AAA+ title on PS3? WTF?!?!?

» Well..

I've been through 3 PSPs, 2 fat and one slim. First fat my dad lost, second one I sold for games since I found there weren't enough things to keep my interest. Slim I got for christmas and later sold for cash toward a replacement 360 (and then the exntended warranty came out wtf) so even though there probably aren't enough games I find interesting, I'd still get this PSP 2 for the hell of it. I can't see the PS3 getting a 100$ price cut but if it did at 399 then from a neutral stand point I can not find an argument to not get one over a 360 later and all my friends who have been holding back on getting one would then have their incentive. I think its unlikely though but if Sony wanted to just move some units then that would be all they'd need to do.

by noshoes84 - 2009-04-22 00:55
» Yea I agree

I have been holding out too and I think I would take the plunge if there actually is a price cut of $100. And since used games are dirt cheap I can finally get to play resistance and motorstorm for like $10 a piece. As for the psp2/4000 whatever I will get it on launch...they could pretty much crap in a box and mark it psp2/4000 and I will buy it. I love the psp....but one thing... TEMPERED GLASS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

@Silver-Tiger:the only worth while games that are out are drakes fortune,MGS4,Li ttle big planet these are the only games that people mention when asked about PS3 games. Killzone 2 was okay talking about the gameplay not the graphics i know it has the best graphics and it was cool but the story and gameplay didnt catch my attention. Your right about the price its perfect and i love my blu ray player i havent touched my ps3 remote for a long time except to play kingdom hearts. I purchased the bluray remote. The PS3 is like when the N64 came out and i tried defending it by mentioning the only games worth it and the ps1 beat it. Well now its backwards Its the PS3 and the 360 is beating it.

» PSPWhack

I don't particularly like the idea of a sliding screen, it just seems so mobile phone style and I can imagine it falling on me while playing... a lot -_-. I tihnk the 2 analogs is good, no baclwards support for psp = bad because of current no umd drive. What I expect is a big pick-up in RAM, CPU power/speeds and maybe some better volume from the speakers. Oh, and better Wi-Fi, and more Infrastructure games would be sweet too. If they do all that, then it just might sell.

But to be totally honest, i'm happy with the PSP because it's a great console. Sony couldn't have done better first time really ^_^.

Anyone with common sense knows Onlive is soon to be an epic fail. I wanna be proven wrong though, but I seriously doubt Onlive is anything more than an elaborate scam. » new Parappa?

You say GOW3 would be a rental and Parappa the Rapper is the most longest, challenging game ever? You can beat Parappa in the 1st day. Takes like 2 hours unless you're telling me pushing buttons that are shown on screen takes 5 days to figure out. There's a new Parappa now, it's called Guitar Hero lol. I love the little dude and his green frog beanie as much as anyone but lol that alone wouldn't help justify $400. I don't even play GOW but I'm sure it's better than a rental lol. Besides, you forgot Killzone 2, (I don't play that even) Gran Turismo 5, Ratchet and Clank, Tekken DRO. Aside from that, there are several exclusives due this year and early next year. $299 is an incredible price, that's only 50 more than a Wii, and it's only capable of 1/12th of the PS3's power, probably less.

by *****bandit - 2009-04-22 09:32
» @Link75e

Link it's entirely obvious you're a fanboy. Seriously what the hell? First of all, the PS3 is sitting at almost 22 million worldwide sales WITHOUT a lower price, and 1 year AFTER 360. Not to mention during the over-hyped Wii phase. For the price it's sitting at currently, PS3 is doing well. 360 is sitting at about 28.5 mil and it's priced MUCH lower. That hardly constitutes "beating it" you nub. And consider that in other regions Sony has a much stronger installed base, Europe and Japan. Do the math. $299 + great games like Ninja Gaiden S 2, GOW3 (only gonna name 2) + Blu Ray gaining more popularity = awesome year to own a PS3.

LOL No you did not just compare this generation to the N64/PS1 era. HELLO?! N64 got demolished compared to how PS3 is currently doing. Wanna know why my uneducated fanboy friend? Let's stroll down memory lane here for a minute. Remember those insanely expensive carts Nintendo used to sell on the SNES and N64 (I paid 80 dollars for MegaMan X2)? Yeah well software manufacturers would often shy away from development because sales weren't so hot for games that costed 70-80 bucks a pop. So guess who came to Nintendo about a CD-add on to remedy this situation? THAT'S RIGHT, THOSE EVIL *****S AT SONY WANTED TO HELP NINTY OUT! Guess who had too much pride and wanted to pocket all the profits for themselves? OH NOEZ NOT NINTENDO, CAUSE THEY LOVE ME LIKE A FIRST CHILD! Right? WRONG! So Ninty ultimately shuts the idea down as impossible to succeed. Then guess what happens next? That's right Playstation is born and Ninty soon learns they made a mistake of refusing to adapt to new game media that is CD-ROM. Soon after the FF project that is 7 is cancelled for N64 and oh yes FF7 PS1 is born.

And now Blu-Ray is the new media. So again, you do the math.

I wonder what features Sony will slash off the ps3 for this price cut. With the loss of the card readers, 2 usb ports, and ps2 backwards compatability, I'm getting rather curious.

Optical audio port? Wifi? There is only a few things left to slash before Sony ends up with a 360.

I am rather bitter that Sony seems to be following this "hack a feature, add some hdd space" approach. Oh well, at least I have the 60gb.

Anyway, hopefully the psp2 will be anything like that fanmade render.

@ ****bandit

I'm saying GoW is boring after you beat it in 10-15 hours. Parappa has replayability. To this day I still hook up my PSX and play it and Um Jammer Lammy as well. And Parappa's hat is orange... Kill Zone 2? The first was horrible. I have no desire to play the second. GT5? I hate racing games. R+C? OK you got me there. i forgot one. ONE more game. Tekken? Tekken 6 is right around the corner and is multi-platform. I'd rather play real fighting games anyway. VF5 is FAR superior than any Tekken game. Plus my Dreamcast plays any fighting game thats worth a damn.

+++++++++++++++ +

@ Silver-Tiger

What good games? I can't even come up with 10 EXCLUSIVE games for the PS3 that I would even want. I have a 360. I have a Wii. I have a PC and a Mac. Why would I want to run Linux on a PS3? I can hook any of my computers up to my TV. Blu-Ray? Screw it. maybe I'll care 5 years down the road when its no a rip off. Upscaled DVDs look just as good as 99% of Blu-Ray discs out there since they are nothing more than upscaled DVD releases a majority of the time. Plus, when you can stream HD movies, do you really need a Blu-Ray player?

I don't care how much Sony marks down their piece of epic fail... I'm not interested (Unless Parappa is involved, in which case I'll get one when they hit $100). Until then... I'll wait for the next "grilleration."

by *****bandit - 2009-04-23 06:42
» Lol.

And I'll make sure to get you a working time machine. Your comments are border-line fanboyism. I know you're really biased when you're talking about Dreamcast lol. I agree VF is great but see I'm not like you and limit myself to one decent fighting game. Let me guess, you also think SNK makes the best fighting games? First of all, I'm not trying to go into a my favorite game vs your favorite game discussion. Just pointing out the PS3 has great exclusives and you can no longer say PS3 is too expensive. lol I know you didn't just say Parappa has replayability. Like I said, I don't even play GOW games, but I'd never be so ignorant to say GOW3 is a rental then bring up Parappa. Do you know what color frogs generally are? lol Green, but you know that already. And I could have sworn his beanie was red. But yeah that's irrelevant to the topic at hand.

As far as Tekken goes, there's a reason it's the #1 arcade unit in Japan, and BlazBlue is 2nd. I'm sure you just joined the VF is better than Tekken bandwagon that started when VF4 came out. Players like you tend to be scrubs. I myself know how to appreciate a good fighting game. Having played VF5 constantly, I can honestly say I don't see a real reason to hate on Tekken. They play entirely different, so comparisons are stupid and pointless. I'm betting you trashed Soul Calibur IV and compared it to SC1. But again, you're probably some scrub at that anyway. I love any GOOD fighting games with depth and balance. I only dislike MK and super smash bros games. I won't say they suck but they certainly can't hold a candle to SF4, SC4, BB, Tekken 6, and VF5r. I'm sure VF5R will have online play when hits. Since you're this inredible gamer who only owns what you say are good games. How about picking up a copy for PS3 and I can show you what a scrub you are. You can even sell your PS3 back since I know you seem to hate anything Sony-related (and please don't use Parappa as a cop-out, that's so weak).

And anyways this is about what WILL BE a good move for Sony. Nobody cares if YOU have a thing for 10 year old games. Basing your assumption of Killzone 2 on the 1st game is ignorance in itself. I don't even play FPS as I'm a fighter enthusiast, but I would never be so stupid to say those games suck. Blu-Ray movies are upscaled DVDs? Now I KNOW you're some kind of ignorant fanboy. Go back to your world of feature-less, no online-supporting world of "superior" Dreamcast fighting games. Someone hand me a trash bin, cause fanboyism and Debbie Downers like this scrub make me sick.

I am thinking they basically have to upgrade the PSP2....it's been 4 or more years since PSP has been out.

Not to mention with the piracy problem on PSP they should just learn from their mistakes and make PSP2 with similar protection as PS3....

Since if it has no UMD drive, it is automatically seperating itself from the library of psp games...they would def upgrade it.

I'm thinking that front screen should be touchable as well...then you do not have to slide it open for features like movies, pictures, music....other apps....
