Molyneux: PS3 lacks games with 'oh my god' moments, FFVII defined RPG as genre

Final Fantasy VII - Image 1The PlayStation 3 lacks any games with "oh my god" moments. That's how Peter Molyneux, the guy behind Fable 2, Populous, and Black & White, explains his earlier remark that the PS3 lacks any defining titles.

And how does he define "oh my god" moments? Think Aeris. Her death made many a gamer weep. In fact, Molyneux believes that Final Fantasy VII defined RPG as a genre:

I always remember back to Final Fantasy VII, when I first played FFVII, that to me defined the genre. Those were the 'oh my god' moments, I don't believe they exist. I haven't seen many of those on the PS3.

If you guys remember, he also remarked that Fable 2 could be the defining title for the Xbox 360. Wonder how many times gamers will go "oh my god" while playing it. He also said that LittleBigPlanet may be the PS3's defining title. So does he expect gamers to go "oh my god, that sackboy's so cute"? Or does he expect Sephiroth to come in and start a sackboy genocide? Yeah, that'll make me go "oh my god."

So before you guys lay down your own opinions, remember that Molyneux is a gamer himself, and owns all three consoles:

This is very much me as a gamer talking, not as an industry spokesman. I've got a PS3, a Wii and a 360, I've got just about everything.

» the problem with owning just about everything is..

when you have too much of the good stuff, you tend to less likely find a good "oh my god" moments because you'll probably buy a new game every other week.

But to me the "Oh my God" moment was NOT aeris dieing.

The "Oh my God" moment in Final Fantasy VII was the motorcycle scene!!!!

Up to the motorcycle scene, I was pretty bored with FFVII. It was then that I went HOLY S*** this game is good! The Aeris scene was touching as well, but it came after the bike scene, and since there can only be one moment, it has to be the bike scene!

I was going to say the same thing....

» Well... The Aeris scene was pretty "OMG" worthy...

...but other OMG moments in FF7 (at least, in my experience in playing the game) are the following - aside from the Aeris scene, of course:

1) Mako Canon (Sister Ray) vs. Weapon

2) the destruction of Sector 7

and 3) cross dressing for Don Corneo

» well...

MGS4 had its OMG moments, but to have felt that way you had to play previous MGS games so if you didn't you would have been pretty lost. Also, they weren't as exciting as OMG moments n other games (but honestly not in this new consoles, I mean game quality has gone down significantly by time, though I least I got to play videogames when they were really good (played since 1995-1996 and saw the really amazingly great games ti'll around 2005, then it al ended, and no, MGS4 was really good, but as a hardcore gamer I don't consider it of the top games...)

an "oh my god" moment right there.

yeah yeah, ok. we've heard that same argument from a lot of other people in the past already.

oh yeah, he admits that he's a gamer. but what he fails to admit is how much of a big MS fanboy he is.

besides. his so-called "Oh my God" moments can mean different things for different people. and depending on how you define an ohmygod moment, it can be triggered by pretty much anything.

omg moments can be anything like

- aeris dying

- meeting the first colossus in shadow of the colossus

- trying to beat the hardest song in the hardest mode in rockband

- losing to your younger sister in cooking mama

- not being able to connect to xbl to play lost planet

- etc etc etc

see? omg moments can be based on gameplay. like... omg the controls are just amazing! or, it can be based on storyline, like omg she did what?!?! or it can be based on epic graphics like omg i have to defeat that huge piece of aaaaaggggh run away!!!

lesson learned: depending on who you ask and what they're looking for in an ohmygod moment, chances are (whether that person has played mgs or not), there's stil other omg moments on the ps3.

too bad for molyneux he's just comparing everything else to ff7 now. i mean yeah the game was like OMG!!! but cmon... to compare everything to ff7 and say that there aren't any more omg moments anywhere else? please. apples and oranges maaaan. apples and oranges.

Up until now, I've kinda had to say, "Well, he is Molyneux."

Now I just..just...facepalm.jpg

Real OMG moment....

The end of Patapon where the Patapons AND the Ziggys were building a boat.

Don't fight it, you all know it's true.

» Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm

I suppose then, that Mr. Molyneux never played the Heavenly Sword demo. If the jump from the rope doesn't qualify as an "OMG Moment", just what exactly does?

Others:

--Motorstorm: the rock-cliff jump in your vehicle via SixAxis motion-control from one mesa to the next (again, even seen in demo); the slow motion crash off of a cliff side.

--Gran Turismo Prologue: just seeing the Daytona track from in-car view at 200mph in 1080p.

--PixelJunk Eden: Level 7 (I think) and it's 'gravity-switch' mechanism.

--WarHawk: 4-player split-screen LAN play (8 player) at 1080p with motion control.

...and that's just exclusives. If we want to include cross-system games, Stranglehold & Dark Sector have some awesome moments.

» actually and honestly...

anhero, to ur comment, this was my first msg experience ever and although some of the elements of the story were confusing due to lack of knowledge of the series, I may have had just as many omg moments as u or and other msg series player, especial ly near the ending. although i will point out that they were probally of a different type. Even though msg4 was my 1st msg title they did a hell of a job providing info and a clear understanding of what had happened in the past and it made a newcomer like me not only understand snake but feel welcomed to his closing chapter. So near the end of the game, you can be sure that i shared the same uneasy feeling in my gut that you veterans of the series felt when we all thought that you know how would you know what.

I think there was no single "omg" moment in FF7. The whole game was a single "OH MY F***ING GOD!!" moment....

Seriously, the game was so good because everything was revolutionary.

The graphics were amazing for that time, the jump from 2D to 3D worked perfectly, the difficulty was ok, the story was mesmerizing, the controls were intuitive, lots of funny Minigames, the atmosphere was stunning, the sountrack was cool.... I could go on the whole day. All in all, the game was a perfect example of how a game should be.

Besides all that, we have yet to see a game like this in this gen of consoles. Whether it is Xbox 360, Wii or PS3, I know no game that comes close to FF7.

LittleBigPlanet has the potential to play in the same ranks, but we have to see if it can live up to the hype.

Oh and by the way: Fable 2 will NOT be a "omg" game. Not even close. It's a defamation of FF7 to sort it in the same ranks.

It just means comparing two things that have nothing in common. Like comparing a black with a white controller and saying one of them is better.

by redfield2007 - 2008-09-24 06:22
» upcoming omg's

there are a few games with that omg factor on the ps3 man...MGS4, DMC4, COD4....a lot of fours...

And for certain, a game that will redefine the omg factor is the upcoming releases, Silent Hill: Homecoming and Resi 5...

I mean come on...Silent Hill in HD...just imagine it...and Resi 5 in HD is enough to make any hardcore gamer druel...

Honestly that guy cannot be serious!!!

» and another thing...

forgot to mention the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII...that game should redefine RPGs forever...

» MGS4

had a huge omg moment for me. When I was younger I played the first Metal Gear Solid, but I was unable to sneak into the first snow level building because I didn't know how. When I played MGS4 and the same moment popped up, I was like ***** I'm not going to know how to do this. But when I started running around, I finally figured it out and I said OMG that's all I had to do! Plus it was fun doing it again when snake was older.
