Peter Molyneux - PS3 still needs a defining game - Image 1Peter Molyneux, creator of such games as Populous, Black & White, and the upcoming Fable 2, recently expressed that the PlayStation 3 still needs a defining game, just as how Wii Sports and Wii Play are for the Wii.

And what game defines the Xbox 360? Well, he believes that Fable 2 may be one of its defining titles. Of course, he knows he's not exactly being objective with that one:

Maybe Fable 2 is a defining title. But you are talking to the proud father of this game, so you can't ask me to be tremendously objective.

So what game does he believe will be the PlayStation 3's defining title? Three words. Well, no , you only need one. LittleBigPlanet.

If we want to bring people in who haven't played games before, wherever they are in the world and whatever their cultural background, whatever their sex or age, then we've got to think out of the box and start creating stuff which fascinates those people. I think LBP could be one of those.

» F*ck Molyneux

He's been hyping Fable and Fable II so much. Molyneux, watch some games like LittleBigPlanet , MGS4, Killzone 2. Those games are HUGE, and just happen to only be possible on the PS3. Now stop hyping your game.

ummmm has this guy never heard of mgs4? Ratchet and clank?

i think the ps3 has a few "defining" (assuming this means when you hear the system you think of this game) titles.

LBP will be one of them

Bah... Syndicate was cool, but otherwise, Molyneaux is one of the most overrated developers ever.

» uhh

The 360 already has halo. As for the ps3 I think LBP really could be it's defining game. I am really enjoying MGS4 but I don't see it having huge mass appeal because the game is very in depth and not as plug and play like halo/mario/etc.

I hope developers don't keep making watered down titles though just for mass appeal but here is to the hope that LBP isn't watered down and will have mass appeal.

» Of course...

My game will define gaming on this console, because it's my game and I work for this company...

Sony does the same damn thing all the time.

Black + White was actually very cool, but otherwise I agree. The second one sucked really bad. Fable and Halo were the only games I bought for my old Xbox. And yeah, it was massively overhyped. It was way too short and way to less possibilities to influence yourself or the story. After that, I sold my Xbox and got a PS2.

» yh thats what i was thinking

but what about ratchet? that has mass appeal.

by wilmheath - 2008-09-18 05:08
» agreed but...

But I mean people don't line up the night before for ratchet. I def. see this happening for LBP. I lined up for halo3 like all the rest of the nerds and I'm sure I'll get LBP on release day also. Now I just need to find some time to play all these good games coming out.

» yup

I only played B+W briefly, so I can't really speak as to how good a game it was. I do know that it's pretty popular and got a pretty good critical reception, so I'll take your word for it.

Otherwise, games like Theme Park and Dungeon Keeper were nice, but certainly not awe-inspiring. Populous was excellent, but it's always struck me as a niche title.

by scarface_tha_second - 2008-09-18 07:34
» ...What?

Both consoles already got their "defining" titles.

PS3: MGS4.

360: Gears of War.

Whoever denies that is wrong.

I do not know Populous, I somehow missed it, although I heard from a lot of people that it is good. I might give it a try now...

» I agree

He makes a good point. But in my opinion, in order for a console to have a "defining title" it needs to have other "defining title" canidates to go up against.

Xbox 360 has Gears of War, Halo, Mass Effect.

PS3 has MGS4 and hopefully more to come. I guess Ratchet and Clank could be counted.

We need to time to define a title. PS3 needs to release their upcoming games first too.

» He was good back in the day

but his time has long since passed. he's now nothing but an ignorant trash talker. fable 2 the 360's defining game? what a moron.

by illjot - 2008-09-18 13:04
» Xbox 360 also has it's defining game already

Gears of War was 360's defining game and there are others. So to bad Molyneux.

by rollypoly - 2008-09-18 18:23
» imo

a "defining title" would be one that takes full advantage of everything a system has to offer and does it well...

while everyone says "hey what about my fave game" none of them fit my definition...

halo 3 is probably the closest...

we will see, yes fable (project ego for the early fans) was over-hyped, but a good game regardless...

i expect no less from fable 2, console defining maybe... but probably not.

» Hmhmmm

I agree Sanzee Comment!

by Achooist - 2008-09-18 23:27
» Wha--?

PS3 does have defining titles.

But in Molyneux's defense, I think what he's saying is, "People are saying Fable 2 will define the 360, and I can't object because it's my game."

PS3...no defining title? Right...

Fable 2 will be a good game, but it's not one to define the 360, it's not hyped up enough. (SEE: HALO 3)

=P

» uhhhh....

I thought it was halo that defined xbox =_=....

by FOURTHxSURVIVOR - 2008-09-21 05:20
» At least

He has high hopes for his game.....even though, as previously stated be illjot above me, Gears of War is the 360's defining game.....
