Peter Molyneux, the brilliant and soft-spoken boss of Lionhead Studios has praised Heavy Rain, calling the story-based thriller "a first glimpse of future video games." In an interview with Joystiq during this week’s SXSW event, Molyneux said:

I recommend anyone who wants to start to see the first glimpses of the future of video games to go out and buy it. But, personally, I could not bring myself to play more than 90 minutes, because the world that was there was so dark and so emotionally involving I felt emotionally beaten up.

But there's no question in my mind that games like Heavy Rain -- games that have a new fidelity in the way that they present their experiences; obviously made with cinematography and motion capture in mind -- can really show the way forward to a new form of entertainment, which is evolving the story and choices and consequences.

Molyneux also commended Quantic Dream's design choices and the games QTE interface:

I have to take my hat off to [Quantic Dream] ... There's a couple of things they do in that game which were really revolutionary, and what they do with quick-time is fantastic. Us designers were just laughing because we thought quick-time was dead, but that really was part of the drama of Heavy Rain.

I agree, Heavy Rain is one of those few games that sucks you into the drama. I think some people are missing the point in Molineux words. What he means with "the future of gaming" is about games that inmerse you into the story, games that let you choose your path rather than impose one on you, games where every player can have their own experience. Rather than games that put a rifle into your virtual hands and then make you shoot the "entire U.S. arsenal of bullets" up the bad guy's a$$es just because... errr hey! they're bad guys remember?. It makes me remember that classic Bioshock phrase "Would you kindly?". http://www.destructoid.com/the-ten-most-meaningful-videogame-quotes-of-all-time-64837.phtml

I will quit gaming altogether if that QTEfest is the future of gaming.

Heavy Rain is Okay. I hope it isn't the future of gaming... maybe a variation with more action.

Graphics are great, but the storyline and game play mechanics need improvement. They try to get you to connect with the characters but it's disjointed and doesn't work for me.

quote: "its a new genre a new experience and awe inspiring"

The sad thing is that some people fail to see that. They try to box Heavy Rain into the established genres. They try to box it as an action game, or as an rpg, or as an horror game and base their opinions on that. The first trophy in the game clearly states it's genre: "Thank you for supporting Interactive Drama". It doesn't get clearer than that.

If this is the future of gaming, I'm done! Ok, I liked the story it WAS great infact, but the gameplay was a little boring. Especially when you had to do useless stuff, like taking care of a baby!? REALLY!? Also, 20+ ENDINGS!? No, could not play this game more than 1 time especially since you couldn't skip anything...

there have been Digital novels, for the psp, wii, and even the ps3 as i mentioned to many people who said that this game is 1 of a kind... its just the evolution of those IE Book > Movie, Interactive book > Interactive movie =\
