ModNation Racers PS3 brings back the split-screen

Great news guys! United Front Games has revealed that their upcoming wacky kart racing title, ModNation Racers will not only include twelve-player online experience, it will also bring back the split-screen multiplayer goodness in the PS3. According to Mat Thomas, Game Designer of United Front Games:

There are two multiplayer experiences that we were keen to deliver in ModNation Racers. First, there was the online race experience (up to 12 players), while the second was the couch racing experience. It is hard to beat the multiplayer experience on the couch against friends – I think we can all remember this experience from other games we have enjoyed, and we were keen to make sure we delivered the same frantic experience for ModNation Racers.

We wanted to make sure we delivered two-player split-screen. From the start, we wanted our two-player split-screen to work online. ModNation Racers enables you and a friend to go online and play the game together. This makes for intense competition and a lot of fun! Do you play together, helping each other out or do you take your friend out at every available opportunity? You can play action races and pure races together. More importantly, two players can play together on any tracks developed by United Front Games or anyone online. It makes for an almost endless experience that two players can enjoy together.

Finally, we decided to deliver the four-player couch experience. This was a lot of work, but we have managed to create a great experience where four friends can settle down for some great kart racing. What we have delivered is a fantastic local multiplayer experience reminiscent of some of our best local multiplayer play sessions from years gone by. Sit down with friends and family and battle each other to see who the best is! Again, you can play action or pure race, as well as race on any tracks in the game created by United Front Games or other players.

ModNation Racers is scheduled to arrive on May 25, 2010 for the PS3 and PSP.

Yes it is, most multiplayer games these days only focus on the online aspect of things. Devs seem to forget that the original "multiplayer" were two friends or family playing on the same console, on the same tv. I even wonder sometimes why does the PS3 has support for 7 controllers and the 360 for 4, if I almost always find myself using only one.

I long for the days of old of playing perfect dark with my friends/cousins and like 10 bots, all with different AI. It was so much fun, and in my mind some of the best offline multiplayer to date.

That's so sad. I thought that 7 controller functionality would've been put to good use already.

I'm like, disappointed because of how much I hate online.

Before, to get an extra bud to play, you had to only buy a new controller and ask your parents if they could come over. Now, to play multiplayer, you have to buy a new console, new game, an expensive headset to talk to each other, and fuck, if they don't have it, internet.

That's lame dude...

It sounds great... but shouldn't it all be standard? I mean MarioKart can do it on the Wii - why is it such a big deal for the ps3 to do it?

Why only 2 players, wtf did I buy 4 controllers for if they aren't going to make any 4 player split screen games. The only one I have is LBP.

I think this is what the PS£ is sorley missing, a gazillion player online match is all well and good but you cant beat a good 4 player couch session with ya mates
