Modern Warfare 2 sets all-time entertainment industry record |
Ó
So how big has Modern Warfare 2 (PC, PS3 and Xbox 360) become? Well you can forget about Grand Theft Auto IV's previous US$ 500 million video games record and Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince's US$ 394 million five days post launch box office record. According to the estimates of Activision, the latest installment of the Call of Duty franchise has so far generated $550 million worldwide in just five days to set an all-time entertainment industry record, shattering all previous first-and five-day entertainment industry box office, book and video game sell-through records.
"In just five days of sell through, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon," said Activision CEO Bobby Kotick. "The title's success redefines entertainment as millions of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media."
Additionally, Microsoft has also released some Xbox Live figures on the games success, revealing that Xbox 360 owners spent 5.2 million multiplayer hours playing the game on the first day alone with more than 2.2 million unique gamers playing on Xbox Live unlocking more than 11 million achievements, setting a new one-day record for the online-gaming platform.

Remeber, this is a company that drops games that do not "have the potential to be exploited every year on every platform with clear sequel potential and have the potential to become $100 million dollar franchises." Some of the best games were created without sequels in mind..

Don't get me wrong, MW2 looks good but ffs, these types of numbers just encourage Activision to say "Well boys, looks like we were right. Our little test in the UK proved that spiking the price to $100 still prints money and sales. Sale we do this to all games everywhere we ship?"
Someone else "Sounds great. We'll be buried in 'money money yea yea' "
