Modern Warfare 2 name still being explained

Modern Warfare 2 - Image 1

Even until now, Infinity Ward is attempting to explain the whole hullabaloo regarding the name they accorded to Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, and PC). And rambling as this explanation may seem to you, it oddly makes sense to me. From what I can gather, they want it to be recognized more for its Modern-Warfare-ness more than its being a Call of Duty iteration... get it?

Here, lead designer Todd Alderman explains (again) in an interview with Joystiq:

Well there are a lot of different factors involved, but we wanted to make sure, and I tried to state this at the beginning, that this is a different game. I mean it is not Â… it has got 2 on it obviously, but it is not just a sequel. It is not just another Call of Duty game. It is a big new thing and we want people to associate it with Modern Warfare 2. And it is the same story, so it is in the Call of Duty universe.

So messaging it both ways, I think itÂ’s helpful. People that are in the know, know what Modern Warfare 2 is. People that know what Call of Duty is might not necessarily get it in a way, but establishing that identity and making sure that this is Modern Warfare 2. It is not just Call of Duty blah, blah, blah. It is Modern Warfare 2. And then having the Call of Duty Â… we are not denying it is Call of Duty.

Does it even matter what the rationale was behind the naming of this hot coming-soon-title? Modern Warfare 2 comes out November 10th, and I don't think it's gonna be the name that the fans are gonna go crazy over.

They don't want to have any association to Call of Duty: World at War. They hated it after all. And with good reason.

if it wasnt for the zombies, W@W would have been a waste of money

Its like a cheap counterfeit product and the only people I've known to praise it have been the type that think they're better than others when the truth is they insecure people that resort to ridiculus name calling to make themselves feel better about their sub-par life! :P

Its the only one I cared enough to prestige on or spend more than 10 hours total on Multiplayer. So speak for yourself when you say "they wanted to disassociate from World At War". If it was inifinity ward who made it down to the T, you'd be all "OMG diz is so KeWL I neva Eva plizzayed a GaYmE LyKe DiZ"

I liked the United Fronts expansion also developed by Treyarch. Not taking away from Infinity Ward, but a good game is a good game.

I wish they would reveal more about the single player because that's the major selling point for me. While I will enjoy and will likely become addicted to the multiplayer, it is the story that will ultimately draw most of my attention.

I guess we'll just have to wait. From what was said during the GiantBomb interview it seems like they are going to hold all of that stuff until launch week.

Is Crap, That games sucks sooooo bad! I bought that game thinking it was going to be somewhat like COD4:MW or at least close. I gave it a chance. I just couldn't take it. Leave the WW2 games to EA: Medal Of Honor series. Even now, All I play is COD4! That game is perfect! Except for when you have a streak and the host leaves the game and ends the run! Good thing thats fixed for MW2!! I CAN'T WAIT FOR MODERN WARFARE 2!! NOW THATS A REAL FPS GAME!

I voted this down because you are wrong.

The problem is the fact that treyarch copied everything from CoD:MW. The sniper level especially took it too far. Treyarch just stole that directly from IW

You guys just don't even use logic anymore, do you? WAW was just a copy and paste of CoD4, and exact copy & paste, just set 60 years in the past. Same exact gameplay. You either spray with R1, or hold L1, then start Spraying (replace L1 and R1 with whatever system you played this crap on)

I just don't see how you guys can praise CoD4, but then say WAW sucked just because it was made by Treyarch, ignoring that the games are exactly the same in terms of gameplay. The games share the same crappy netcode, the same lag issues, the same wonky hit registration, and the same group of 12 year old fanboys.

Most of you who praise CoD4 haven't even played any other CoD *before* that game for longer than 2 minutes, so you just ignore how IW started the whole "CoD in WW2" thing.

And since you kids like to say Treyarch copied IW so much, I bet you commoners didn't know the very ENGINE that CoD4, 5, and 6 run on are just modified versions of the old Quake engine. A shame they had to use bits of code from an actual good series to create this abomination.

And that CoD5 sniper scene bore no resemblance whatsoever to CoD4's. If you watched a single WW2 sniper flick, you'd know that pretty much 80% of WAW was just directly inspired by various WW2 films. One example: Enemy at the Gates.

That sniper used the same tricks the characters did in that film, such as using a helmet as a decoy.

Now maybe, just maybe MW2 will be so epic that it'll redeem itself, but I'll reserve that judgment for *after* I play it.

And you kids thinking that CoD4 was still 10 times as popular as WAW are just being too comministic to admit that CoD5 has a nice fanbase, even if the game was a pile of crap. 100k on average across all three platforms (PS3, 360, PC), and CoD4 has about the same numbers.

The whole "IW hates Treyarch" thing is ridiculous. You kids will come up with anything to defend IW, even though you didn't start playing CoD until CoD4 anyway. If that were the case, IW wouldn't let another developer handle their own series. They just dropped CoD from the title because they realized how cheesy it would sound.

I agree with pretty much everything there. However, "WAW was just a copy and paste of CoD4" and "And that CoD5 sniper scene bore no resemblance whatsoever to CoD4's" is a contradiction. You, sir, are a Tard

@ adz1990: First off, what you're stating is an opinion not a fact. If you liked MW, you liked it more. The fact is MW is not even 100% original anyway. 1 it took the best of COD 3 ( Ranking System), 2, took the earning guns from Battlefield 2, and 3, it took the SETTING of BF2. Ok on to the next guy.

@ Relys: I got all the achievements for COD 2-4 + WaW, what can you say about kills now? Also, Treyarch ported the TH games to DC which were the best versions of the game.

Now..to someone I agree with

NarooN hit it dead on the head, all the "hate" towards World at War is because its Treyarch. The part of "Our land, our people, our Blood" is the single greatest mission in ANY Call of Duty, from the PC version WITH the expansion, to the last gen games, to COD 2-4. Fact is, I ENJOYED this game, and I thought the ending was VERY Epic. Who the hell cannot get a kick out of sniping General Amsel in that mission I was talking about? Who doesn't like being the hero? I saved Polonski when I did the campain first, then redid it to save Roebuck.

So I go back to what I said earlier, if IW made it down to the T, they'd bust a nut over it and praise it half way to hell. Either way, I LIKED World at War. and I COULD'VE prestiged on COD4 but I care not to. Only on World at War did I give prestiging a shot. So Adz you are the retard here my friend. Learn to differenciate between opinions and facts. COD:WaW also sold more copies + DLC, if you're going to go by those numbers as well.

Saying you agree with some 90%, then calling them a retard is like going on a date with the girl of your dreams, then complaining because she has an ugly toe.

DON'T reply to me unless you actually got something intelligent to say. Cool guys I've had the pleasure of speaking with before: Matt-N, Digitus, and Musev. These guys know how to hold a conversation even if they disagree with me.

Kids like you though, need to go back to the Deto.

The only resemblances were sneaking around and escaping. In CoD4, there were no badass counter-snipers for you to take out. You didn't sneak past 50,000 soldiers like you did at once in CoD4. You didn't get rescued by some helicopter. Reznov didn't get injured and you didn't have to carry him. Etc. etc.

Go look up what contradiction means next time, since you're just an 11-year old who thinks he's COOL by going to google after he sees a big word and trying to use it on people over the net to make yourself seem at least a little intelligent.

If IW made the exact same game as Treyarch, no one would have said anything. And WAW did have some kickass missions, but most of the *good* missions were ruined because they used that "Unlimited spawning enemies" trick.

That's a big no-no in the Big Book of FPS Development, along with random RED barrels. At least make the barrels random, non-imposing colors if you're gonna put them in your game.

You shoulda saw the kids at the CoD5 DLC articles at this site. Just filled with denial after seeing the numbers of the DLC.

"WAW was just a copy and paste of CoD4, and exact copy + paste, just set 60 years in the past. Same exact gameplay." Clearly you are saying the game is almost identical in every way with the exception of time.

"And that CoD5 sniper scene bore no resemblance whatsoever to CoD4's." Now you are saying a portion of CoD5 did not resemble CoD4 at all.

Needless to say, you ARE contradicting yourself.

I also find it kind of ironic that you remark, "... you kids like to say Treyarch copied IW so much ..." yet you opened your entire rant with that very statement. Your arguments are full of fallacies'.

Okay, you now have permission to fire back and insult me.

You quoted me where I said the game was *almost* the same, and then quote the part where I said one portion of the game wasn't the same. Go learn what a contradiction is, since I never said it was a 100% CopyPasta job.

The whole "Treyarch copying IW" bit was to emphasize on the engine, not the overall game itself. I mean, it's cool how you couldn't counter anything I said, but instead tried to be an e-detective by nitpicking at my posts because you lack good reading comprehension.

You and the other commoners who reply to me, bashing the post itself rather than countering it, need to get some e-respect and only reply when given permission.

I mean, *I'm* the one who's trying to help *you* out by educating you on this matter, but this is how I get paid back. Tsk tsk tsk.

This coming from the same kid who I thought I took care of in the second post I made. The fact alone that you had the audacity to reply to me after the post you made astounds me.

Obviously, I made it clear I was talking about overall gameplay, specifically the multiplayer portion, which is what I always mention. I never said the entirety of the game was a copy job, since CoD4 didn't have any Zombies and WAW didn't have a bonus mission that took place on a friggin' plane.

Once again, get off my page until you learn how to make a post that's actually relevant, rather than crying to me because you can't interpret things correctly.

I never comment on the things I see on this site, but reading you two and your horrifically strategized argument just makes no sense to me. You both are exactly the same. Open up with an insult or defence, the mid body will be your "point", and you finish off with an insult.

Grab a brain. NarooN, you contradicted yourself many times because in the act of desperation you yourself are a fool and made yourself look like an idiot while your original post was excellent and opinionated.

Whoa...did I say opinion? Yep. His post wasn't fact, this is teh internet..you have rights to your own beliefs, just dont make yourself look like a tool to the rest of teh world.

"[you] need to get some e-respect and only reply when given permission. "

I suggest you work on how you formulate your arguments. You do have many valid points in what you write. But, that being said, you overshadow your intellect with arrogance, and then completely negate your message by attacking the person you are writing to. It seems as though when you reply to a comment, you seek a fight, only so you can pummel the person with personal insults until they no longer bother responding.

We all have opinions. If YOU want to get some "e-respect", show a little man.

Call od duty 5 is not a past and copy of COD4 ,

COD WAW is reproduction of COD4 who failed ,

i think the main problem is that tryarch focused on COD4 in production line that who limited WAW designers imagination , and tryarch end in the trap of COD4 VS COD5 , but beyond that WAW have many bug and bad game play ,

- Bad respown balance

- on rail enemy AI

- on rail feel game play

- tank mission is a 16 bit color 32 mb video card game

- the last mission is simply a bad idea or a bad represntation of history .

hope tryarch drop call od duty name too and prove to IW that they can make a FPS game ,

In the end i think IW have not the right to drop the call of duty name even if they made a great episode ,
