Microsoft: we have something better than Killzone 2 |

PlayStation 3 faithfuls look to Killzone 2 as the Xbox killer. And the game is indeed, truly awesome. Even Microsoft officially congratulated Sony and Guerrilla Games for their work. But, surprise, surprise, Microsoft says they have something up their sleeve, something even better than Killzone 2. Says an MS rep:
We congratulate Sony and Guerrilla Games for their efforts with Killzone 2, however this is only the beginning of a new wave. The current technology employed for certain unannounced Xbox 360 exclusives far surpasses what gamers have seen in any game so far.
Gears of War was the beginning of this technological benchmark when released on the 360 and this lineage will be carried forward in the following months with exclusives that shall stand for a new definition of gaming experience and provide stiff competition for the opposition.
This is the first time I've ever seen a message of congratulations phrased as a b*tchslap. Can Microsoft really pull it off, or are they all talk? I'm curious to see how they'll do it, considering the limitations the Xbox 360 has against the PlayStation 3. We'll likely find out soon.

It's either another multi-DVD game or the game is going to be short with a lot of back tracking(DMC4, Dead Space). That's the only way 360 is going to beat the Killzone 2 graphics. KZ2 is only 60% or so they say of PS3s power. Uncharted 2 and GoW3 is what M$ needs to target.
your right. the only way they could do it is to somehow release a bigger disk to support better graphics and better longer games. its deffinatly not going to be a hardware add on cause x boxers arnt going to throw out more cash on their console. that just leaves software. but im sorry. if they are using gears 2 as there starting point they wont catch up. we're using KZ2 as our starting point. x box has a long way to go me thinks.

I've only had Killzone 2 since last Friday and it's blown pretty much every other shooter on consoles gameplay wise out of the water. I'm 99% sure that there is no way Microsoft will be able to pull this off. Closer to 99.9% Killzone took everything past shooters have done and refined it to the point where it feels new and interesting again. Between this and Metal Gear Online to fulfill my TPS cravings. I don't think I'm going to need any more shooters this generation.
Definitely has some kick-ass game, if they work on the unit price they would dominate. COMMON FRICKEN SONY! With that in mind I honestly believe the X-Box is already reaching it's full potential, they really need to start focusing on revolutionizing there gameplay (Halo 3 and GoW2 didn't help there) cause they cant win in the graphics department.

I played the demo and thought it was pretty standard tbh...and the dodgy controls absolutely killed any enjoyment for me...feels like there's input lag even when the sensitivity is cranked right up.

Look at the ridiculously priced 60GB Hard Drive(Includes Headset and 3 months of Live) at 99.99 120GB at 139.99 and the wireless headset at 49.99 and plug and play kits for the controllers at 19.99 and they used to have HD-DVD before that died at 199.99. Obviously people are buying it or they would have lowered the price by now. I really want a bigger hard drive too for installing games but its obviously overpriced. The wired headsets are poorly made and they break pretty easily and the wireless one is suppose to be alright but its a waste of money when all I can use it with is my xbox 360, unlike my ps3 which uses bluetooth atleast i can use that with my Cell Phone and my Computer which has built in bluetooth.
M$ has something better than KZ2 on the way? Big F'in deal. Infinity Ward had something better than KZ2 1.5 years ago called Modern Warfare. KZ2 looks pretty, but try playing it. Good luck getting your character to do what you want. GG says their controls are 'tactical,' pfft!

I don't know what you're talking about. The controls are fine. The only problem I've had with the game is that the AI is TOO smart at some points. I admit Modern Warfare was indeed amazing, but to me it failed to give the impression of a "War" especially in Multiplayer. If you want something that feels like War play a 32 person Body Count Match on Corinth Crossing. I've never had an experience before where it felt like there was fire coming from all over the place to the point where I was afraid to move.
So, M$ says they have something better than KZ2. Surely, that may be true. However, this is only going to continue as both Sony and M$ continue to exist in the gaming industry. One day it'll be Sony on top, the next day M$. I'm both a 360 and PS3 user, so I get to experience the best of both. Some of you fanboys should reconsider and try experiencing the other side.

Microsoft's congratulatory statement to GG and Sony provides further evidence that Killzone 2 is indeed a huge success. We can all thank Sony and GG for setting a new standard for what a next generation game should look like. Hats off to Sony and GG for little to no problems with the FREE online servers also.
But back to Microsoft, they never congratulate their competition. Sure, they're quick to say they have something better, but that was a genuine congratulation. Come to think of it, Microsoft are not bad people. We can bash them all we want, but they sure are good at delivering what gamers want as is Sony. I encourage them to come out with something better than Killzone 2. Microsoft recognizes Killzone 2 as a new wave of technology and I encourage them to raise the bar with their future endeavours. Maybe Sony and Microsoft can work together one day to produce some cross platform gaming, but I won't hold my breath.

Yeah I bought the 60GB HDD because I needed it. I didn't want to get the 20GB because I want to install some games. The reason the add ons sell because people aren't really given much of a choice. It's a really great business idea. People think it's cheaper yet they pay the price of a full PS3 even more.
Personally I'm sticking with COD5. Anyway I don't understand why Microsoft is on the offensive about graphical capability. Good graphics doesn't necessarily mean good game.

Like a new console! Come on it's 2009 I want the best graphics and best gameplay. PS3 Is the only one that has that. I'm not settling on poor graphics for good gameplay. I have Symphony of the Night for that!
It is truly pathetic that the MS has to target Killzone 2. I mean, it's a good game and I bought it, but it isn't really great, and to be honest it felt like a combination of Gears of War and COD4 (including pros and cons). As of now I've played the campaign for almost 4 hours and the multiplayer for like 2 hours and I'm not really that impressed; though a good game it deserves, in my opinion, an 8.5/10. I still fail to see any REALLY good game in this curent gen consoles besides MGS4, and even that isn't that great.
If Microsoft is targeting a good yet not groudbreaking game then it's really pathetic, and I hope the answer isn't a new Halo game because with so many different developers it's not gonna be as good as Halo 2, or even Halo 3 as a matter of fact.
Recently I had hope for RE5 but after playing the demo I have been pretty disappointed at the new system. Maybe the new Zelda game that's gonna be announced at E3 will be groundbreaking. We shall wait and see, but from the looks of everything, games seem to be losing their quality as time goes by...
...What's next? Hopefully it won't be a failure like Haze was to the PS3.
Another thing, I'm tired of people trying to compare consoles through DLC, Accessories, and Online Cr@p. As much as I like all that extras stuff, let me repeat myself again..."EXTRA" because that's what it is, it's only to extend one's experience with an overplayed (or Over-hyped I should say) game. DLC, Accessories, and Online Play is just to strengthen the consoles or game's shortcomings.
Let's see what M$ has up its sleeve.
...Damn how I long for the days where the Sega Genesis, SNES, N64 had complete games without all of the extra cr@p stuff and as much fun or actually more than today's games. DLC should be left to the sequels, I think GTA: Lost & the Damned was really a filler and a waste of time having nothing to do with Niko Bellic or the actual plot. >_
From being in the beta, to playing the demo was a real huge downgrade. Now owning the full game however, they really improved on a lot of things including some of the complaints you brought up.
First off that was a bad map to choose to show off on a demo (its one of the few maps with a lack of color and exciting things going on). There WAS input lag when shooting and aiming but it seems to be fine now while I play it. All I do is put the control layout on alternate 2 and its perfect for me.
This game is pretty damn good in my opinion, so I'd try not to let the demo deceive you. If you don't want to buy it then at least rent it to see if its good or not.

I even heard that some DLC are included in disc but companies decide to actually charge you in order to unlock the damn thing. I think most DLCs are just a fad. I so long for the old days...Today's games just look like the RE4 over the shoulder camera type of games, and yes...RE4 was the one who started that ever since the Beta...not Gears of War like most people like to think... Saying online play and DLC is merely "extra" is ridiculous. What about games that are strictly played online, or games that are bought almost exclusively for their online content? LBP, COD, and especially KZ2. Even the old consoles you mentioned had add-on hardware.
Killzone 2 two gameplay isnt that great i sold mine already all i have for my PS3 is MGS4 and The force unleashed but i got it on my PS3 cause it needed some love as almost all my games are on the 360 cause of the achievements and yes theirs trophies but im ashamed on how they are viewed by me and friends. But if they did have something so cool that would blow my pants off would be a Kingdom hearts remake in HD or Zelda ocarina of time HD that would make me cry in joy(forgot final fantasy 7))
LBP, is an exception because it's concept is about ever-expanding creativity...but COD I beg to differ same goes for KZ2. Add-on hardware is totally different to add-on software, and if you mean the accessories are not extra you really got to revise your concept of what a gaming console truly is down to the core or just get yourself a computer.
Some DLCs are made even before the game's release but decide to hold it back, instead of packing it in as an unlockable and sometimes worst case scenario they'll charge you for it...charging you for the epilogue or continuing after the game's end should be considered a crime (Prince of Persia + Fallout 3). Another thing I forgot to mention, confusing DLC + Expansion Packs is a great mistake...I rather wait for a full Fledged Expansion for $29.99 a piece than ever ending DLCs not worth what's being charged off ranging from $5.99-$15.99 a piece...>_>

Far surpasses anything that gamers have seen so far? Not likely Microsoft. I could see them making something close to Killzone 2's graphics but far past it? I would be afraid to play a game like Killzone 2 on 360, with all the graphical awesomeness, insane physics and particle effects the 360 would likely start smoking and then melt.

i totally agree. it ACTUALLY feels like im in a warzone the whole 30 min rounds. and the controls are just really realistic, unlike COD where you can throw a grenade across the map untill someone dies.
Here I thought I was the only one that thinks that this gen is lacking something. There is almost absolutely no originality. LBP was something that deserves credit and now Madworld. RE5 Demo was disappointing. KZ2 is good but not revolutionary, except the graphics (for a console game that's really good). Zelda I doubt anything will change.

Never played COD4, but I don't need to because I'm more interested in WWII style military fps anyway, that's just me though. So I don't think it matters that it's copy and paste if it's a good engine and a fun game. Anyway if "following the crowd" means playing the newest games then speak for yourself. Also if KZ2 is the best multiplayer game you've played since COD4, and COD5 is a direct copy and paste of that then I must be playing a pretty good game right?

I was going to get it, but then tried the demo. Talked me out of it - the game just didn't do anything for me. Admittedly I am not a huge FPS fan, but I have been known to dabble before.

RE4 Beta has been around since 2001, and that concept down before Splinter Cell did...plus Splinter Cell never had any true OTS (Over the Shoulder) to it.
Thanks for understanding my point, I did mean Downloadable content as an addon not a full game like SFII: HD Remix. It's true that there could be innovation but it rarely happens anymore just like you said, today's games follow the same pattern which I find demotivating to actually forward to anything...I think we just hit a wall and now we got to find out a breakthrough to get past that wall just like 2D games jumped to 3D...All we got to do is wait with some faith to it.

@phiyuku: It's always good when someone points that out. I absolutely agree: Microsoft's 'game' is to nickel-and-dime their customers to death. But, as to whether or not that *really* works ....I don't know. I remember years back when Sega had Genesis ...then Sega CD ...then 32X ...then 32X Sega CD ....... it seemed like, "Wow! There's so much cool things I can add-on to my system to make it do more!" But, at the end of the day, that's not how the majority of people really see it (especially those that are watching their pocketbook). Instead, they either see right through the money-scheme and DON'T BUY the console to begin with, ...or they buy it AND NEVER ACCESSORIZE.

All that said I agree with you though that it's probably another crappy RPG, and I've hated every single RPG game they've bought out on the 360. Halo Wars was not the game to release up against KZ2, everyone knows RTS is much more marginalised then FPS (even if it is brilliant).
Next Gears I wouldn't expect until 2010-2011, that Halo3 ODST expansion they might be talking about, but geez I'm not expecting anything revolutionary from that.
I mean it's the Halo3 engine FFS that's not revolutionary that's old now (it is a great game engine but it's not new).
So I'd doubt it's Halo4 because that'd be putting the cart before the horse, you don't release new tech when you've got something coming out using the predecessor's tech.

I got like 3 lines into your post and realized i was becoming dumber, everyone loves to slam the 360 for its failure rates but apparently dont like to look up sonys infamous disc read error with ps2, or how many broken ps3's you can get on ebay..
i own both systems and i have to say i play my ps3 a lot more, not because i prefer it but a bunch of my buddies have ps3 so when a game comes out i get it for ps3 so we can play together. im sure my faithful xbox of 3 years is a little jealous but oh well, people forget that its a company they are there to make money.. as for selling consoles while they lose money its because if they charged exactly what it cost to make it back when it first came out no one would own it.

This goes mostly to the MS rep since id love to aboard some subject I know they would never answer.
What irritates me is the fact that Xbox 360 is going around parading like it's the greatest thing to ever grace video gamers. Did KillZone 2 really make you guys that scared that you had to give a back handed compliment followed by we have something up our sleeve? Let's put aside that comment for a moment and look at some facts: Firstly I work at a video rental store and we make bout 300 - 450 dollars every 2 weeks repairing Xbox 360 discs from the red ring of death. We charge about $3.00 to refurbish a disc. In comparison we do about 30.00 with PS3 games and about 60+ with Wii becuase mostly kids ruin the cd's. Secondly Microsoft parades that there system is cheaper but its not in anyway shape or form. You buy the system for $349.99 (not the crappy Arcade version) Then you buy Xbox Live subscription which is about $59.99 for 12 months at best buy. Then on top of that god forbid would you wish to watch Blu rays because then your really in for it. Seeing as how as of now you cant watch next gen HD movies you have to wait to get on integrated in your Xbox and that wont cost more right? lol. When all is said and done after buying live, your xbox, your head set etc. You have not only paid more than a PS3 but every 12 months your in for some more money spending pretty awesome?
In addition to the obvious the system itself if completley unreliable I cannot count the amount of phone calls coming in for broken Xbox360's or software damage not to mention that one of our employees who is a former customer rep told us some horror stories about how he was told to deal with complaints. I won't delve into that since I don't see a point most people know there help is mediocre at best.
Now back to the issue bedsides the fact that when you put a PS3 you but a blu ray player the best (hardware wise) game system out there your also graced with SCEA exclusives which by far trump most Xbox360 games. But that again is a matter of opinion and taste. However in recent months its become clear that Xbox is worried about PS3's quick climb and i guess this is the response to that. I remember when Xbox fans would laugh at me for buying my PS3 saying it was too expensive Blu ray would never win and the games sucked. Yeah so Blu ray won, The games like LBP, Killzone, Uncharted, Metal Gear 4 and Ratchet and Clank have all received huge praise not to mention the upcoming God of War and Uncharted 2. In the end I'm the one having the laugh now.
I was willing to buy a system that was more reliable and was more future savvy. However this comment was the icing on the cake its juts like Microsoft to say something like that to try and act like they have something up there sleeve. The fact of the matter is that if Xbox had the chance to license killzone they would in a heart beat, but there system cant handle it so there goes that. Just like they tried to bribe the creators of Metal Gear to no end in order to get the game.
The comment by the MS representative strengthens the validity of my purchase. One game made them that scared that they had to make a public statement sounding like the comment a school yard child would make about how there dad could beat up your dad. The Irony here is not that I only own a PS3 i use to own all 3 console so am in no way biased, however after the terrible customer service the disappointment prices and the lack of blu ray i made a definitive choice.
The simple fact of the matter is Microsoft is biting them selves in the ass for some mistakes made in in years 2008 and are now paying for it the release of an early next gen system with limited capabilities that now seems outdated on 1080p HD TV's. The fact that they have lost exclusive titles like Bioshock was a huge hit for the in addition to the fact that Bioshock 2 is now scheduled to be released on PS3 also is a huge blow for them.

Those smoke and particle effects on the PS3 are pretty exceptional, I haven't seen GOW2 do them quite that good. Don't get me wrong they're no slouch but KZ2 definitely has it over the 360 with them at the moment.

This should prove interesting. I personally think that the best looking game on the 360 was Gears 1. Gears 2 had way too much texture pop-in and seemed like they gimped down the lighting effects to compensate for more stuff going on on screen. So in the end, at least based on my experience with the game, my Xbox could barely handle Gears 2. BUT, just as Killzone devs are saying that the full potential of the PS3 hasn't been tapped, I'm sure 360 devs can say the same. At least I hope, because if a game like Gears is the peak of technical achievement on the Xbox, then that's not saying much. But in the end graphics aren't everything.
Considering they quoted Gears 1 as being the "Begining" than it's obviously based off of unreal technology.....and since it's been un-annouced, it's probably just gears 3.....
I wish MS good luck.....since KZ2 looks better than gears 2 by far and is only supposedly using 60% of the resources. Not to mention the game doesn't require an install, alot more could have been done if they had chosen to go that route...
There is alot of post-processing going on in KZ2, and that is straight number crunching, which PS3 excels in.....so as much as i'd like to see something better come along, please announce it and show some concrete evidence and not just talk out your ass....

Sorry, but you do not judge one console vs another based on multi-platform releases. Because, like ps3 vs 360, yeah it is about lazy developers....as cliche as it sounds. 360 is basically a PC, can be programmed like a PC....PS3 needs the program to be designed and programmed around the architecture of the PS3....most consoles have been like this in the past.
When you judge one console vs another you have to look at Exclusives, and only exclusives, to see what the system is truly capable of....
Right now, Killzone 2 beats Gears 2.....PS3 has the upper hand as far as showing off technical acheivements...
I also wanted to counter argue that you can say Killzone has been in devlopment since gears 1 was, maybe before. However, this just goes to show the learning curve that is inherent in developing for PS3....and the time paid off.
KZ3 will be amazing....and since SCE studios are sharing information, everything learned in KZ2 will be applied to future SCE games.....

When it's as far as porting at the same time yes then the 360 more often then not may look better. But look at Oblivion. It was ported to PS3 a year after the 360 and looked even better.
perhaps its mgs4 on 24 discs with exclusive DLC voice-overs from kiefer Sutherland damn microsoft no but seriously do they really think that anything they got will come close to killzone 2 and the power of the PS3 even bio shock looks better on the PS3 and that's a port from the 360 version at the end of the day the PS3 wins at everything in terms of specs and value for money fact so there's simply no point in arguing about it.
i'm surprised to see you of all people falling for the "% of resources" or "% of system power" cr@p spewed out by certain devs for hype purposes. :)
anyway, although killzone 2 looks fantastic (but not "far" better than gears 2 btw), it's the result of 4 years work and massive resources available to the developer, and therefore marks a good "line in the sand" for achievement at THIS moment for the current gen. however, *both* 360 and ps3 will have games which exceed anything we've seen in killzone 2, since that's the nature of game developement.
that's why i have to smile at that response from ms, because it's to be expected that the 360 has games in developement which exceed killzone 2 (maybe project offset is one? remember that anyone?). If it didn't, then there's something wrong. But the same is true for ps3 games in developement too.
Killzone 2 will not be the console graphics 'leader' for long.
As far as most devs say, 360 is superior, graphicswise, and processingwise over the ps3, and as we've learned in the past, sony always falls short...look at the ps2, they said it was better than the first xbox yet no games came close to halo,rid*****,o r the splinter cell games designed for xbox...the ONLY limitation is storage, ps3 has blu-ray and the ability to put your own HDD on it. Microsoft could easily get rid of this limitation if they do the games like pc, an install disc, and a game disc, so you never have to swap, also make an encasing so we can put whatever HDD we want in it. Also, Killzone IS the prettiest game I see on the market NOW and I like the ps3, don't get me wrong, I HATE ps2, loved psx, love ps3 but 360 is ultimately the console i do all my gaming on. the achievements, party system and what not is great. what microsoft needed to do was fix gears of war 2, those damn smoke grenades suck ass.

Devs have said that the 360 is easier to work with, but never that it was a more powerful because they'd be talking out their rears. The RAM issue is that the 360 has 512 megs of GDDR3 RAM that it can use to do whatever. The PS3 has 256 megs of XDR RAM (RAM which is much more powerful than GDDR3, in fact it's twice as fast and runs at lower latency making it almost equal to the 512 megs of the 360) dedicated running games and another 256 megs of GDDR3 for multimedia. And the 360 doesn't even come close to the processing power of the PS3 so you can't say that. Cell technology (the technology used for the PS3 processors (which by the way there are 8 of them, 7 not counting one lying dormant versus the 360s 3 processors) was used as the processor for the current fastest super computer if I remember as well as being adapted by the military. In short the PS3 hardware rise runs laps around the 360 as far as hardware goes. I appreciate that you're post was civilized, but the information you're conveying in incorrect.

It worries me that they made reference to Gears2 in the article. Gears2 engine almost equals KZ2's engine but almost only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.
360 might have a better GPU but the cell is where it's at in terms of a CPU. I'm guessing that's how it's making those smoke and particle effects look so good. They look nearly as good as Gears 2 but gears2's particle effects seem to look a little more flat (almost sprite animation based). I wonder if the cell is what the PS3 is getting an edge on the basis of to do them. Those teraflops might be useful after all for that (you can't make up for that stuff with a good GPU), solid 3d models can be done through bump mapping etc, but particle effects you kind of need some pretty tricky floating point calculations done to emulate how the smoke moves etc.
I don't own a PS3 but I've studied closely quite a few in games videos of KZ2 playing and it looks really good (most noticeably the smoke + particle effects), player models and lighting I can't see alot of improvement over Gears2. I haven't seen any footage of water moving in KZ2 to do a comparison to Gears2 though. I love Gears2's water, it looks so good I often feel thirsty while playing. :)
That being said I'm surprised MS would come out with a statement like this because sooner or later they'll have to put their money where there mouth is. Hope it works out for them.

runs great etc but
i grew up with half life counter strike on PC,
i can play but never enjoy fps on consoles if i cant have mouse and keyboard.
for me resident evil 4 and 5 are not that great when it comes to control and camera positioning, they make me dizzy after 30 minutes or so.
uncharted, mgs4 and all those action adventure games are great, and gta4 is still my best 7th gen game.
and when it comes to fps for me, counter strike and cod4 still beats gears of war 1 2, halo 1 2 3, resistance 1 2.
and i dont like killzone 2.

demo's are supposed to make a person feel that the game is worthy of their money.

As Killzone said in the first release EGM i believe published give or take 7 and a half yrs ago the "halo" killer... Microsoft has out punched sony every go around as I own all 3 next gen consoles each console are in their own class... Wii with the capabibility to burn calories while gaming the ps3 with the graphic quality and 360 with online and very comprable graphics to that of ps3... And as it was stated before all these games lack originality...
Now back to what i was going to say was... Microsoft's next BIG move should be a new battlefield styled game on a grand scale. im not talking like black hawk down teams of a max of 50 im talking about large scaled wargames fought like how chrome hounds had their online setup. Different countries no REAL countries of course...but I mean territorial battles and maps fought out and so many wins under one country wins that area and you got to push back enemies with matchmaking so the teams are equal....so to sum it up...

Battlefield-the amount of different ways of entering combat zones. Meaning Tanks helicopters and vehicles

Xbox 360 is much better than PS3, if only the DVD drive in xbox had more storage space it would have beaten PS3 long ago. Sony was just over-confident this gen and thought "If PS2 sold well PS3 will too" and i could say the same hing about the PSP as well cuz there are no games coming for it.

I think one of the Army Men games on PS1 had a camera view like this so did some other military game that I can't remember the name of.
It might have been one of the "Spec Ops" games, Or Delta Force.
I assume that most people who stick up for the PS3 are kids with small hands. As an adult I find the PS3 controller way to small for my hands...as i did also for ps2 and ps1 controller. The PS3 may be way more powerful than the 360 but that doesn't matter to me if I can't play the game without my hands cramping up. I'll be sticking with my 360.
There are plenty of 3rd person shooters prior to RE4, but RE4 was the first to shift the character to the side with the crosshair in the middle of the screen.
