Microsoft: selling add-ons is the winning strategy, Sony responds |

Remember that "add-on peddler"
comment Sony threw at Microsoft? Sony hissed, Microsoft hissed back. Now that the NPD numbers are in, showing the PlayStation 3 selling little more than just half the Xbox 360 did, Microsoft's PR dude took the opportunity to officially reply to Sony, saying that they're just fine with sticking to selling add-ons:
The strategy of having a console that is US$ 200 more expensive that has features that people don't potentially need or want but have to pay for--looking at [Sony's] sales numbers--I'd say it's probably not the winning strategy at this point, especially given the current economic situation.
At the price point we're at and the content that we've got, we feel like we have a lot of momentum going into 2009.
Sony, of course, wouldn't take that lying down, and responded with their own PR:
Where we differ from the competition is that we're committed to delivering the best gaming and entertainment experience with a system that not only has the latest technology like Blu-ray and Wi-Fi built-in, but is a reliable device with a 10-year lifecycle.
There's not much point to these PR exchanges, since we already know the individual strengths and weaknesses of each console. The only real purpose for them to bi***slap each other is to drum up publicity. Take the high road guys, shed the fanboyism. I'm only posting this coz it's totally hilarious.

it's like aluminum rims for a car, they save weight and in turn gas... car makers offer different "trim" levels for the people that want them...
if they would sell a ps3 with no hdd they could move alot more, especially to techs like me.

I don't know one person that bought a 360 and liked having to buy batteries or having to buy the play and charge kit for it...
NTM 3 out of 4 of the batteries you get with the play and charge kit die after a year. (I know 4 ppl including myself, 3 of em died 1 didn't...and that one is probably dead by now)
It's funny, because MS acts like the 360 was cheap from the day of it's release....it was not. To get one in the first year, even the most bare bones one was quite expensive. Then adding on the mandatory "optional" add-ons (like play and charge kit, wireless controller if you got the early arcade) made it quite ridiculous.....
Also you now something is up when the cost of the system has come down so much over the years, but the accesories are all the same price......it'd be no biggie if the wi-fi was $30 by now, but it's still 80-100, and play an charge kits are still $25 and crappy wired headsets are still $30....

Now, about the artical...
I own all the consoles. I have had 3RROD twice on the 360 and I now have a dead laser on the PS3 so both consoles break but the way it gets repaired is better by Micro$oft as $ony love to rip people off.
Here's my thing about them.
I brought a 360 2 weeks ago for $250aud and $ony want me to pay them $315 to repair the PS3. In my calculations its cheaper to buy another 360 than it is to repair the PS3.
To me it looks like $ony dont want to win the console war but like to BS people into giving them more money.
Anyway, its funny the way both M$ and $ony BS everyone into thinking they are better than the other. It all comes down to price and personal preference.
As the 360 is cheaper it will always win until the PS3 is the same price OR the PS3 can play backups then it will win.

and if you want all (not even close) the the features the ps3 has on a 360, it would cost you much more.

Huh. Where I come from 1000 times more likely to break means something is seriously wrong.
