Microsoft: PS3 Delay Due to "unproven technology" |

Taking advantage of Sony's announcement of the PS3 console's delay in PAL regions, Microsoft has blamed the PS3's delay on 'unproven technology' that Sony has promised to gamers. They also said the inevitable and claimed that Sony have 'backed away' from it's commitment to a global launch for the PS3.
Xbox UK boss Neil Thompson said "We know how challenging it is to pull off a global launch, so it's not surprising that Sony has backed away from their previously announced launch plan, due to the unproven technology they are trying to pack in to their console," jumping on the bandwagon to turn Sony's decision against them.
Last year, Microsoft launched their Xbox 360 console in Europe, Japan and North America all at the same time, a feat which Sony cannot quite manage due to complications with the PS3's revolutionary technology. Microsoft and Nintendo now face one less competitor in the run up to Christmas 2006.
"Europe remains a priority for us. That is why gamers have been able to experience Xbox 360 from day one, and why we're confident we're going to have a great Christmas - regardless of what competitors are or are not in the market," Mr Thompson stated.

The only things they took out were the things that everybody said shouldn't be there in the first place. There is now one HDMI instead of two, and only one ethernet port instead of three. Thats it man, so I don't know what that (what's left in the box) comment was all about. Actually whats left is still way more features than 360.
It doesn't surprise me at all to hear a comment like this from Microsoft. They act like they've been releasing a new console every three years for a long period of time or something. PS3 is proven technology, it's a system, it has games being made for it, and it will sell regardless of what some might think. Even if Blu-ray fails in the movie format war it will not matter because games will still be made for PS3 on Blu-ray and they will cost the same as 360 games on the inferior format DVD. I have a 360 so no fanboy comments please. To me the 360 is unproven technology because for as long as I've had the damn thing I've yet to actually feel like I really own a next-gen system. So far mediocre games, slightly updated graphics and lag in every online game I have for it doesn't justify $400 or Microsofts willingness to bash Sony every chace they get when Sony is actually trying to release a console that truly is revolutionary.

And there isn't a console for which someone hasn't said the same thing for quite some time after launch!
Perhaps you could tell me all the great games which came out for the launch of the PS2 in March 2000! List all the great PS2 games within 10 months of launch (i.e. until January 2001).
It took over a year before a game which could be considered truely next-gen was launched on the console, that game being GT3 A-Spec. Until then, all the games were mediocre at best.
It takes time before a next-gen console hits it's stride, however despite this, 360 games are considerably better examples of next-gen gaming compared to the PS2 games 10 months after launch.
>"when Sony is actually trying to release a console that truly is revolutionary."
Well, I have my PS3 on pre-order (and have to wait until March 2007!), but what is 'truly revolutionary' about the PS3? Sure it has Blu-ray 2x, which offers higher capacity but slower speed compared to DVD 12x, and it has more theoretical floating-point performance because of Cell, but less general code performance compared to the 360's CPU, and GPUs of equal power. Hence the PS3 is only slightly more powerful overall.
Yes you can list HDMI and a few over features, but nothing makes the PS3 revolutionary compared to the 360.

Anyway, this is huge news! Let me tell you that they say that Europe is key for a nextgen console tyo reach maximus market share!
That´s why MS has always backed so much this region! And now it seems that the PS3 is gonna see laucnh delay there...... SO X360 will definitely be a major success!!!
I cant believe this! Its great!
MS has done things right in console entertainment: Great console with excellent features like XARCADE, XLIVE, XMARKETPLACE and others extras; great fun games; innovating accesories; truly topnotch customer service, support and help; well integrated comunnity (did I say XLIVE!!! :) ) and all of this is delivered with a tremendous right on region-culture emphasis..... AMAZING!!!

Try 10-40 bucks for good length HDMi cable. Some of you obviously only know about the prices you see in stores. Best buy and similair stores carry 1m (3.3ft) cables for 40-50 bucks.
But you can get the same 1m cable online for less then 15. I bought a 25 ft HDMI cable for 50 bucks.
HDMI quality is several times better then Component. If you "could" hook up an Xbox360 with HDMI it would look much better.
HDMI vs Component?
HDMI wins in every resolution from 480i to 1080p in terms of clarity, quality and color balance.
Blu-ray vs DVD
Sure blu-ray is new, but its going alot faster then DVD did. How long did it take DVD to become a standard? Years, it took years before the players, DVDs, and studios made it big. HD-DVD and Blu-ray are pushing the next standard and it will take time. Size matters in games these days. Sound is still the major player in games, you cant compress sound files without losing quality. Textures are getting bigger and so are the models they cover.
GPUs?
How well does the ATI perform against the RSX. Its nearly identical? Well how does the XBox360 CPU compare against the Cell? Cell wins hand down. It can process anything and on top of that, produce its own high quality graphics. So its really ATI vs Nvidia+Cell. And The PS3 wins overall. What proof? Just search for Cell demonstrations in graphics rendering. Alot of Cell based servers are removing the video cards because the Cell can render the video itself. The graphics are very nice on its own, add the power of the RSX and you have a powerful combination. The CPU in the Xbox360 isnt designed to render any type of graphics, software rendering hasnt improved for generations until the Cell.

What kind of a moron wrote that? What revolutionary technology!? As far as I'm concerned, Blu-Ray is a step BACKWARDS... Load times will be *****E. Devs don't need that much space, and probably won't for a few years. Discs are expensive, meaning games are more expensive to produce and will probably lead to corners being cut to compensate for high costs. Not to mention that even if Blu-Ray wins the format war (which it won't), by the time BR movies start becoming mainstream the PS3's drive will be outdated (remember the PS2 playing DVDs? Sure it was nice at first, but in a year or two no one played dvds on it because it looked like *****)!!!

Actually the 360 GPU is quite abit better then the RSX due to have 48 vs 32 pipelines, and all pipelines are dynamically allocatable between vertex and pixel shaders, where the RSX has only 24 pixel and 8 vertex.
Also PS3 has to use the cell to do it's anti-aliasing, whereas 360 get's free 4X FSAA because of the 10 megs of EDRAM.
Not to mention general processing is much better for physics, and that's all the 360 CPU will have to worry about other then AI, because it's GPU can handle all the graphics.....
Read the 20 page article on ARS technica and maybe you will understand that it is far from revolutionary....

and to the moron who says the ps2 outsells the 360, you aren't the sharpest tool in the shed are you? of course a 40$ system will outsell a 400$ system. does that mean the ps1 is better than the ps2 because it sold more units than the ps2 shortly after launch? moron

On paper, the CPU in the 360 offers half the floating-point power of Cell, and more in the consoles because only 6 of Cell's SPEs will be available for games (one of the 7 SPEs reserved for the OS). Graphics relies on floating-point power, so the CPU in the 360 is VERY capable of rendering graphics, only not quite as well as Cell (on paper).
In addition, the 360's GPU has a feature called memexport (look it up on the net), which allows the GPU and CPU to exchange data, allowing an extremely efficient way to the GPU to be used for other tasks, such as physics, and for the CPU to be put to other uses, such as graphics.
So I don't know where you got the idea that the 360 CPU isn't designed to render graphics, because as long as a CPU has sufficient floating-point power and it has a means available for manipulating graphics, then it CAN render graphics.

But Really... I don't know why people debate the technologies involved in gaming consoles... 99.99% of the time you have no idea what your on about or you know what your talking about but it as nothing to do with anything...
We can talk specs all day but what makes the better system? The Games...
PS3 out in March (hopefully) ... I'm willing to wait... no point buying a console and then waiting a year to play a decent game... I know that when the Ps3 finally comes out - that I and any other self-respecting true gamer will be there too...
After all, it'll be me that has the last laugh.. not the fanboys

Anyways, yeah, i'll get a PS3, not at launch...so I don't want it to fail. Not like there is any chance of that, so yeah, this is all pretty moot

When the PS2 was launched in March 2000, it was over a year before anything decent was released on that consoles too. That's the way it is with new consoles, everyone knows this (except those too young to remember ;)).
The November release of the PS3 means it has been delayed by 6-9 months in the US and Japan, and therefore of course the launch games should be better because of this. If the 360 had a similar delays, games like Fight Night 3, GRAW and Oblivion would have been launch games!
BTW, I do understand much of the technology involved in consoles, PCs and other related hardware. :)

So yes ps3 is revolutionary when compared to its sucessor ps2. This is not so much the case between 360 and the original xbox.
"PS3 is proven technology"
no it's not. something can't be proven if it hasn't been released yet.
i'm guessing that comment was supposed to be regarding all of sony's playstation consoles?

no but even if it was regarding Sony's consoles it's true, PSP is being outsold by the DS but its numbers aren't bad its the DS #s that are simply amazing.PSP is outselling 360 in Japan and doing very well every where else. Then we have PS2, wich is the #1 selling console in the world. So yeah Playstation is proven technology and PS3 will be no different.

Sorry but that's complete BS. You're just using the term 'revolutionary' in which ever way you see as supporting your claim.
The PS3 is no more revolutionary than the 360, the predecessors to both consoles have NOTHING to do with either being revolutionary or not. This is a NEW generation of consoles, and therefore it's how they compare to each other that counts, not how they compare to their predecessors.
And I repeat the question I asked earlier... what is truly revolutionary about the PS3?
>"So yeah Playstation is proven technology and PS3 will be no different."
And there you have it in your own words, the PS3 WILL be no different, you can not say it IS no different because it's not out as yet. In otherwords, in the FUTURE you say the PS3 will be no different, OK fine, but for NOW, it is unproven.
I'll enjoy my PS3 eventually, but I'll enjoy it for what it is, a great console (I expect), not a revolution in gaming or a big step above the 360, just a good next-gen console.
