Microsoft on Playstation Home: "Not a game-centric approach"

Chris Satchell of Microsoft - Image 1Just a couple of days ago, the unveiling of the spanking-new Playstation Home and LittleBigPlanet by Sony at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2007 has caused a myriad of reactions among the public - but let's not forget that there are also reactions coming from the camps of both Nintendo and Microsoft. As we've previously reported, Nintendo referred to the online service as the "Mii-too approach", but now, we finally get to hear what Microsoft has got to say about it.

According to Microsoft general manager Chris Satchell, he believes that even though PlayStation Home makes use of some concepts which are similar to what the Xbox 360 uses (such as in the case of game achievements), he acknowledges that Sony is "pushing in a different direction" and that Sony's "sort of fundamentally got two different approaches going on here".

Satchell has also shown fondness for Sony's LittleBigPlanet which he considers to be "a very cool game" with "a cool user-generated content feature". However, he also notes that he "can't see a big portfolio of games at the moment that do this. I don't think there's a whole load to catch up."

The Microsoft bigwig has a rather valid gripe about Sony's new online service, though. According to him, as fun as Home and LittleBigPlanet may be, "It's not a very game-centric approach." He then explains that "It's a cool world but it's like a little game by itself. Our approach is the other way around; that games are the center and that's the star of the show, that's what people buy the console for."

So there you go. Microsoft basically thinks that Sony may have something good going on in there, but that for it to succeed, it's going to need a whole lot of work first. Well, one has to admit that the man has a point, right?

» MS will be short behind...

Its only a matter of time before MS would think of somthing to copy Sony's innovative Home and Game 3.0 ideas. Most of all,

LittleBigPlanet that makes owning a PS3 worth it. When I buy Sony, I dont think about just graphics and *****, like these punks. They are more focused towards their complete service and reliability. You dont see PS3 tearing lines in my discs.

Thank you buddy. And im OUT-

Poor poor xbot. It is obvious that you don't own a PS3. I on the other hand own both and plan on buying the Wii, and to tell you the truth now more than ever Sony has nothing to envy from Microsoft. The PS3 was already better hardware wise, and multimedia wise. And now they are about to surpass MS on the online world too. Don't get me wrong I'm not a MS hater. like I said I own a 360 and I love playing games on it but I think Sony is still going to be king when it's all said and done. I already replaced my 360 once and with all the people I've seen go through two three and even four consoles I'm terrified every time I turn on my 360 will be the last. Out of all the consoles I've own, the 360 is the only one to ever brake down on me, and only after two days of use. Sony has a quality product and very innovative thinkers with big ambitions. The home virtual world is proof of that. Things can only get better from here on.

It seems people think that you in fact ARE paying for everything you want in-game. But the truth is, most of it becomes free AFTER you buy a game say Resistance: Fall of Man. You will then probably recieve free couches, paper etc.

Or, you most likely could buy the same free furniture if you dont have the game yet.

Microsoft just concentrates on gamers and games. Thats why they have a service to download arcades games, which in my opinion is similar to what sony is doing with littlebigplanet , and they also have a service to download movies and tv shows. The point is that companies need to stop criticizing what others do. When a company comes out with something new the others just go out and start talking trash about it. Just concentrate on making your product better and stop criticizing what others are doing.

» home is pure genius

It's free because they know that developers are going to want to advertise on it, and once it gains enough popularity probably other companies will want to advertise on it, there by making it free to the gamers. And unlike a lot of people who obviously didn't watch the whole trailer for home think, you wont have to buy everything you want in the PS store, only if you want more than what Sony offers for free which seems quite varied. You don't have to buy furniture for your apartment if you don't want to is not like you're avatar is gonna get tired of standing. You do what you want. That's the beauty of it.

MS just cant seem to find a way to rival PS HOME so they bash it instead.

HOME is very game-centric. its a Hub for games and thats the whole point of it. You log in, roam around find new people to play with and start a game together.

If thats not being game-centric then what is? Would Microsoft be saying the same thing if they didnt have a 3d world and just had a series of menu interfaces and lobbies?

PS HOME is a very innovative way to create an online community. MMO games have proven that when random people group up in concentrated areas, its more fun then randomly joining a session.

Microsoft is bashing it down because they chose not to create a 3d interface for Xbox Live when they had a chance. They cant do it now because it would require a whole restructuring of Xbox Live. When they cant copy or make a rival, they bash it.

by mohaas05 - 2007-03-09 08:19
» wtf

how does it have the best graphics? PS3's hasn't been used to the max yet so graphics are only 360's quality. Blu-Ray carries more data and is scratch resistant. and ps3s online is free and much better than wii's. and not everything on a console has to be about games. PS3 is more towards an entertainment system much like the PSP. And Playstation Home will be much more innovative than Nintendo's Mii. Its obvious you're sticking with the company that screws you over with every release of windows.

by Manny151 - 2007-03-09 08:21
» your opinion is very wrong

XBLA is nothing like little big planet. Have you even seen a PS3 in person or browsed the playstation store. The playstation store has games for download and not only for the PS3 but also for the PSP. Little big planet is a community game where you can design your own level and share them with the community and test out other peoples ideas too. XBLA is nothing like that.

» Microsoft's concentration...

Not trying to be mean or biased, but Gamers and Games are the least worries of Microsoft. They're more concerned with DRM, Google (check out cnn.com/tech), Apple, etc. However, their gme department does put a lot of concern on the games, but in my opinion, they don't really seem to until something of theirs gets messed up like the first round of Xbox 360's that came out.

» this is sad

Ps3 fanboys will jump threw hoops to bash the 360 because at the moment its all they can do. Ps3 has potential but the 360 has substance. With the ps3 its all what if, whats coming. 360 its here it works and its good. Its got the better graphics, its more stable, its got the fastest loading times it has at the moment the best online service. The ps3 has bad choppy graphics, a bad cpu for gaming a slow lastgen gpu and potential for a new innovative online. Now i have no doubt that when cell is optimized it can push out some darn good graphics. But people need to wake up and smell the coffee that the ps3 is not a gaming machine at heart. It will not beat the 360 and wii at games because it clearly was not designed for them. Its a media center that also happens to play games. Sony have a whole different approach to the gaming thing. The ps3 buying system is horribe and its the worst ive ever used. The guys at penny arcade did a good article on it actually .Its not as simple as the wii and 360. And its also not as fast. Honestly from a developers point of few and all of my co workers. The 360 is the fastest, it does have the best development tools and it is a joy to program for. The ps3 is far from it, the rsx is a generation below the xenos, edram, unified shaders and geomtry shaders in the 360 are so useful in pushing out great scenes. But the ps3 you can push something out of it. But it has so many bottlenecks the main one for me is god dammit why is blu ray so damn slow. And why does the ps3 OS take up so much of its ram. I know of a few companies that just havnt even considered using a the ps3 as a platform because its just not worth the cost. Anyway rant over you can believe your expensive ps3 can push out twice the power of the 360, but whos the mug me who knows what to expect from the ps3 and so decided the 360 was the better platform. Or you living in your dream world and believing your overpriced purchase is going to eventually live up to its hype?

» They Copied my idea lol

I have to say bravo to Sony nice move with home and little planet which has so much potential it’s amazing what people will make on that then share with others, but they did take my idea of home which I thought of as an interface. I thought of a virtual reality world where u interact with people and you go to your virtual ps3 and boot a game up like in real live but in a virtual reality. I’m not mad just interested what game developers will do. Imagine they make like a final fantasy world where you can explore or what ever. While other developers who could make a world where it’s like a game where you use your character to play. Who knows where it can go let’s just say the future looks interesting. While MS and Nintendo do respect the idea and from reading what a MS rep had to say in the article above I get a feeling they know they got something to worry about. Peace Out

Also am going to write my ideas down from now on, so where’s my pen lol

» knowing most Companies

They will because it's not just games now, they will have it for everything. From a-z, think about it. For less then it would cost to pay for tv advertisements Nike, Mcdonalds, Pizza Hut, Toshiba, GAP, Underarmor, and millions more all can start their own place in this world. Making their own products avalible to all the people on the Home network for free or for a few cents or dollors. You will be wearing the same shoes you have own in real life in the game or maybe the same t-shirt.

It's not limited to games, and you and your friends can go chill at your place and watch videos that you want to share. Maybe you have a new DVD you can load up on your tv and watch it. Or talk about your last Resistance battle, even talk about a new game you have that just came out.

It's really limitless to the things that you will be able to do.

» Hrmmm

I have both systems and enjoy them both. I don't care which is technically better but I will say I play my 360 more because of the gamerscore feature and I have more games for it. I am glad Sony has finally decided to clue us in though, I was starting to worry my PS3 would end up a paperweight.

Chris has a point, Sony's Home does seem more like a game, I just hope they make support for the 3D trophies and joining games from Home mandatory for all games. Can't wait to get in and try it, looks like fun.

Extinction's right. Nintendo implemented games on DVDs for their Wii after PlayStation2 did. They implemented the ability for their console to either sit upright or on its side (So did Xbox360) AFTER the PS2 did it. And their God-awful motion-sensing wand thingy that somehow passes for a controller ('Innovative' is not a synonym for 'good', btw) came out two days after the PS3's SIXAXIS came out.

by Crow - 2007-03-09 09:48

So Roncoloid. You think that it is a Good thing that MS is bringing out another console? That doesn't seem very good. Think about it. If MS has to bring out another console, and Sony doesn't have to bring one out for 5 years or more, then I see that as some staying power.

Console Longevity is just as good as the games that appear on it. I say this because then developers and others do not have to learn new hardware *if any at all* and now that there is a newer 360 version coming that is going to have a bigger harddrive and HDMI (from what I understand) MS just screwed itself in the long run. They could've had all this stuff in the early going but chose not too. Now they are doing it because people want it. I'll stick with a wii or ps3 for 5 years, and you can keep taking your re-hashed xbox's every few years.

Innovatation isn't everything.

Graphics isn't everything.

Power isn't everything.

You've got to put it all together and the Ps3 will have the power to do that.

(basically graphics don't matter unless you own a 61" HDTV 1080p like me... game devs are always just making 720p games.)

Ok well this is argument really is going now where ok listen. Sony have been very ignorant issuing some very daft statements in the past, Now it was microsofts turn but there not being 12 year olds they are bringing up a good argument. Home is a nice idea, But it alone isnt going to sell systems. Whats with the fanboys giving other fanboy stars. :S As of now Xbox 360 has the best graphics and online play. Wii is the most innovative and the fun play (Really depends on what game you like), PS3 is just not immpressive and what other people I know have said the exact same. Now if you are going to argue with me please dont bring up stuff my 12 year old sister could have came out with.

Everyone is taking ideas from others, and I do not really see it as all that bad. PS3 home is most likely in response to achievements and mii. X360 put in 1080p and is going to put in HDMI because PS3 has it. Wii is trying to become more internet-based because the Xbox had great online capabilities. These are all ideas that have worked and so everyone wants a part of it.

I wouldn't say the Xbox360 has the best online play.

it has a better online interface, but once your in the game, I have to give it to Sony for providing a lag-free experience. No matter how good GoW or Halo2 is online, lag pretty much takes a 8/10 rating down to 3/10. I cant stress enough that MS needs dedicated servers or else Sonys service will run over them.

Also in terms of better graphics, There isnt anything the Xbox360 can do that the PS3 cant. Right now, the best graphical game is GoW for a console, UT3/UT2007 is Epics flagship title that surpasses GoW and is running on both systems. Therefore, graphically, they are equal.

In terms of which service has more potential? HOME has the advantage once more users are on PS3s. While the Xbox360 has over 50% adoption for Xbox Live, the PS3 has the ability to have close to 100% because its free.

"UT3/UT2007 is Epics flagship title that surpasses GoW"

We haven't seen the PS3 and 360 versions of this game, so you don't know that!

"Therefore, graphically, they are equal"

Yes, they are equal, so why has it taken you SO LONG to finally accept this? I've lost count of the times you have argued and argued here on QJ about PS3 graphical superiority as if your life depended on it, especially back when many seem to expect 1080p from most PS3 games.

"In terms of which service has more potential?"

Neither has more potential, but right now the 360 is winning in terms of quantity and quality or service. We'll have to wait and see how each approach developes, but I have to say I'm not convinced that PS3 Home is really the answer for a great service. Once the service is up and running, we'll have a better idea.

While other consoles have potential you have one that has substance, and thats one and only 360. You will all see how this ends on the long run. It's not our fault MS Xbots that your silly sony morons chose and baught and over priced product. Sony says but sony rarely does. Sony's known for making empty promises. I thought it'd be about time its fans would realize. Crackheads have better taste than you all if you're claming the ps3 is a better console. And if it was or is why isnt the hottest cosonle around. Cmon it's been only four months. From what i can remember it was still diffucult to find a 360 up till their 6th month.. Blah Blah, Yaaah, Yaahhh,, Nahh, NAhhh, Naahhhh, Ghhaaa Laaahh Laaahh... Goo Gooooh, Gaaahhhh. I bet if Ms released ever 360 with a crack pipe then these sony rats would agree it's better. Sony Sucksssssssssss ssssssssssss.. And I regret buying a ps3. I only own one game and that's resistance. I traded in the others at eb for crackdown, Gears of War and prordered Blue Dragon. Sony fans Make me sick.. 360 ownssssssssssss sssssssssssssss ss.. Microsoft.......

http://secondlife.com/whatis/

It's hardly original 'Lucky PS3 Owner' and it's not a new interface for the internet, it's simply the interface for SONY'S online service.

sony kind of took second life's idea and put a twist on it.

» wow...

i own a ps3 and i'll tell you that 360 is much weaker... blu-ray discs single layered can hold 35 gigs while hd-dvds can hold only 15 gigs of data single layered... 360 doesn't even use hd-dvds for gaming... it has the add on, but only for movies... you basically pay $600 if you get the premium 360 and the hd-dvd add on, so you're better off getting a ps3... nintendo innovated gaming by adding motion sensing... ps3 adds high defenition content and full multimedia support, but 360 doesn't add anything...360 is a dud... the thing about microsoft releasing another console in 2 years is also false... they would get critisism from the consumers... i don't like 360 because most games that microsoft publishes are Mature games... Nintendo makes family games and Sony makes games for Teens, but microsoft makes games for adults... which is bad because kids want to play videogames and if they get a 360 they're forced to buy only a few games that are family orientated, and when they want to get a new game they're forced to get Mature games, which makes people more violent and aggressive... so overall ps3 wins, wii come in second but still close to first, and 360 bites the dust...

wow you're such a fanboy... you don't own a ps3... if u did you wouldn't say it sucked... remember.. ps3 just came out... of course there aren't any good games out yet... all consoles are the same.. they're released with alot of bad games except 1, but as time goes by, more good games come out... sony does keep they're promises... they said that ps3 would still support the psOne and ps2, and it does... even on launch date it supported almost 60% of the games for both systems... yea promised it would be 100% compatible, but then again things happen and change things... at least sony doesn't drop a console after the release of a new one like microsoft did... microsoft and 360 suck... ps3 and sony are awsome... nintendo is the second best, which says alot because they've been around alot longer than the other 2 and are still kickin ass... microsoft should just drop out of the console wars... they should just drop out of everything... all they do is copy stuff... that's all they can do...

» jabonga is right...

he's right... 360 is more of a cd shredder, though... anyways, chief, spell your name right... plz... also, didn't put rumble in the sixaxis because of a dispute with immersive, the company that made the rumble for them... now that they've worked everything out, rumble is comming back... microsoft is always trying to be the best but they don't seem to realize that they can't compete with international companies...

Ps3 is the most powerful...

Wii is innovative...

360 is a cd shredder...

microsoft is the biggest copycat in history...

case closed...

I really feel sorry for you...then again i must temporarly agree with you about the wii but common man !!! do you really compare nearly 2 year old graphics (360) with nearly 4 months old (ps3) which you need 20 min to make out the difference?????? SHAME ON YOU AND MICROSOFT !!!! mark my words in 6-8 months from now you will be looking at sonys back with high magnification binoculars and wipe over your 360 trolls....

Singled layer Blu-Ray disc hold 25GB numb nuts. And yes PS3 games coming out the end of this year will look better then most games currently released for the 360, but new 360 games will look just as good if not better. The gap between the PS3 and 360 hardware is much much smaller then the gap between the Xbox1 and PS2. Good art direction is the key to good looking graphics, pumping out a few extra polygons will make small difference be not to the extent that your praying for.

What you don't seem to realize is that nobody is forcing you to buy anything in home. So yes it is a free service and all the basic stuff like voice and video chat, matchmaking, media sharing is included in the Home service. So anybody with a PS3 will be able to use Home and all the cool online features for free. How anyone can say this is not better than xboxlive is beyond me. You get all the features from Live plus more and its in 3d and free.Live killer all the way baby. Vietone is totally right about the actual online game play. I own a 360 and Ps3 and the game play online for PS3 is much better, I've yet to experience any lag on any game and I can not say that about the 360.

We don't have to wait and see if your right or not because we can just watch Phil Harrisons keynote speech video where he explains everything in detail. So youre wrong. You don't have to buy a single thing if you don't want to. PS3 has games and will have games, look at the 360 drought after it launched, PS3 has only been out a few months and not even in the whole world dummy.

They copied off of the achievements, they copied off of the mii's, what's next??? Oh yeah...didn't they completely copy off of nintendo whenever they were thinking of ways to design the original playstation controller which is still in use as far as design...don't believe me? LOOK AT A FREAKIN' SUPER NINTENDO CONTROLLER, sony added two buttons and made it a freakin' trademark...SONY SUX!!!

» Boooo

I see this as just another thing that proves Sony doesn't care about games and that that's not what the PS3 is for, it's a "multimedia" system.

I don't wanna watch f*ckin movies on my GAME console, I don't wanna look at pics on my GAME console, and I certainly don't wanna romp around some 3D Myspace on my GAME console. SHOW US THE F*CKIN GAMES SONY!

Second Life sucks btw

» There's no place like Home...

Eh, catchy slogan eh? ^

Anyway, I think Home is an excellent idea. Yea yea, we all know Sony got some idea's both from Nintendo, and microsoft, but just think about it...

Achievement points - Like the achievement system from XBL, you play a game, unlock crap/clear stages, the more points you get, the better the score. Whatever. Woopie do. Numbers...

This is a similiar approach sony is attempting. However, Sony has added a few things to this.

For instance, you buy a game. When you beat a certain stage or unlock a certain weapon, not only does it show in your 3-D Trophy show-case, but you might win a prize. For instance, Wallpaper for your "Home Apartment" or maybe a T-shirt for your avatar. Maybe a Poster, hell, maybe a ticket to see an online movie

[sony expressed interest in providing ps3 owners ways to download movies from the playstation store]

So Who knows...

Its a wii bitty little world after all - lol Sorry, but the Wii avatars are so funny looking, it cracks me up.

Nintendo made the option to customize your avatar which is fun and cool, but cmon. Sony easily adopted this idea and expanded from it. Change clothes, facial features, skinny, fat, t-shirt, shorts. Whatever. Oh yah, you CAN play games with your avatar. Just head over to the Lobby and play a game of pool, arcade or bowling. It's all seamless. It's quite lovely.

What I find most interesting is the fact that i can SHARE everything with my friends or people I meet online. You can set up a t.v. with your OWN video footage and have your friends see it in REAL-TIME.

You-Tube, Me Tube!

Share pictures, Share games, User-Generated...Man,so much potential. I give sony props for this...

once again I say playstation home is a completely different experience from xbox live, playstation home is nice, but it will not affect xbox live.

» "The Angel of Disgrace" refers to the PS3

So you say the XBOX 360 doesn't add anything? WHAT ABOUT GAMES? LOTS OF REALLY GOOD GAMES, NO CORPORATE HYPE NECESSARY.

What's the PS3 add? A gimmic designed to get you to buy virtual crap for a virtual apartment. This is sony's way of getting you to pay for the PSN. If anything, PSN Home is a distraction from the current and future pathetic game linup.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-03-12 03:14
» disgracefully retarded

Where did this paper shredder BS come from?

My XBOX 360 never marked a disc any way whatsoever and always read discs great. How do these BS rumors get started by hypestation 3 fan-*****s that are the staple of all their 360 bashing because they got nothing truthful to argue?

Angel of stupidity, Microsoft IS an international company, and are whooping sony's arse pretty well.

What has Microsoft copied off others? The PSN has copied what live offered and just added a cheezy interface to get you to buy virtual useless crap to pay for the "free" online. There's nothing innovative about the PS3 other than the creative ways they get you to buy more crap for it.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-03-12 03:40
» I would say the XBOX 360 has the best online play

"reply to qweqw"

You do not have a PS3 and XBOX 360 with live. You would have to be stupid to believe that. You did not compare them, and you are full of s*it. There is absolutely no noticable lag with XBOX live, period.

You buy all the other crap sony tries to sell you, and I know you will be buying all the custom crap for your crap apartment because you're the type.

Invite your virtual friends to your virtual apartment and show them the virtual furniture you can't afford in real life.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-03-12 03:44

The first tropy you could unlock is the "sony profit tool" trophy. It potrays Ken Kutaragi giving it to you up the ass.
