Ah yes, it's the Christmas season indeed. The spirit of joy and cheer is all around us: angry shoppers, traffic jams, and the occasional cross-platform bashing between Sony and Microsoft.

Xbox 360 product manager Aaron Greenberg talks about how Microsoft is dealing with the holidays, especially in these times of economic turmoil. Meanwhile, he also takes a potshot at every Sony fanboy's favorite Christmas present: PlayStation Home.

I don't want to touch this with a 50-foot pole if given the choice. And since I'd rather not comment on this sensitive a matter, let's just pull in some direct quotes, shall we? Says Greenberg:

I don't think anyone anticipated the current economic situation. We are fortunate to be able to lower our price on our products, offer a great value at a time when consumers are being much more picky. People are staying home more, people are making more family purchases than the past, devices that can deliver a variety of entertainment.

I think that's benefited us tremendously, the fact that the Arcade (Xbox 360) is even cheaper than the Wii has helped us. We will continue to take our great price and add more value to it.

I think we have seen people are willing to pay for the premium experience. When they compare Live, even to Home, there is still a huge gap.

What Home to me feels like is Second Life for hardcore gamers. It doesnÂ’t feel like it broadens the experience and invites people in. When they unveiled it, it seemed innovative. I think what's happened is now here we are a couple of years later and we feel beyond that.

It feels like 2005 tech in 2008. I'm not sure thatÂ’s what people want.

Right-o. Well, after EA's founder confides that he doesn't see the point of Home, I suppose everyone's also still entitled to their own opinion, yes?

Merry Christmas, guys!

Awww

There just pissy because they couldn't pull something like this off. I mean Avatars... Really? The xboxsitty couldn't handle a program like Home thats why there bashing it. I am so sick of Microsoft and EA bashing things that other ocmpanies do because they lack creativity.

not tru dat

Home is for social outcasts the same way Second Life was. You have no friends in the real world, go ahead and sit in a virtual world with them.
by Genotype - 2008-12-11 10:13:54
I agree

Microsoft keeps making themselves look childish. Plus, I made the mistake of buying the Arcade and ended up paying more for the system than if I bought the Pro (After buying all the cables and crap).
by blkthunda - 2008-12-11 11:08:51

And NXE is so great. You can't do anything with the avatar beside dress them up.

Sounds like someone is jealous.

WTF!?!?!?!?!

@teh not so 1337 g@m3r - Except there are no virtual AI users. So: "You have no friends in the real world" "go ahead and sit in a virtual world with them." You cancel yourself out. The people IN the virtual world ARE real world people. There's nothing wrong with having no to little LOCAL friends yet finding friends all over the world. People have plenty of both and there are people who hate being online at all. What's wrong with choice? With that said, SCREW HOME! Not for me. It sucked and was WAY to buggy. Yes, even two months ago! I doubt many bugs got squashed since then.

Well I hate to agree with Microsoft idiots so I'm going to have to find a way to think Home isn't a waste of time.
by Datnizzle - 2008-12-11 11:35:22
Yeah Right...

Home looked sick a couple of years ago, but it dosen't campare to avatars. OK.
by Koolaidsred1 - 2008-12-11 12:05:12
@ teh not so 1337 g@m3r

your an idiot... I actually know a few girls that play games like WoW and stuff and they are really hot, one of them met her bf(they've met and everything) on it so I don't see how its for people who are social outcast when this chick probably has a lot more friends then you can ever imagine.
by teh not so 1337 g@m3r - 2008-12-11 12:10:35
Sorry, I didn't mean it that way

I meant it closer to Why would you go online to walk around in a virtual world and meet people when you can go out to the mall or a club and have physical contact and meet people in person? It makes no sense. If you buy a gaming machine, Game on it. You want to walk around a virtual environment, go to second life or something.
by Ikepsawn - 2008-12-11 12:50:55
@ vinsonbar

What do you mean the Xbox couldn't pull this game off? The Xbox 0n-line structure is like a lot better than Sonys. Microsoft could probably do this ***** better.
by phiyuku - 2008-12-11 12:56:54
Microsoft shouldn't be the one to talk

They created something very similar to home but stopped right after avatars were created. Home is exactly like Xbox's avatar except you can do stuff with your avatar. Therefore regardless of which console you like you will have to agree Home > Avatars since Home is Avatars but more.
by core2kid18 - 2008-12-11 12:59:59
microsoft is all wrong

"Home feels like 2005 tech in 2008" should be "360 using DVDs feel like 1999 tech in 2008"
by BIH - 2008-12-11 13:01:58
....

Why are you idiots comparing Home to Microsoft Avatars totally different things! I have a 360, not too bothered about home. And too all those saying ms lack creativity well "second life"..i mean Home is very original isn't it?
by ShinbuSK - 2008-12-11 13:05:53
no..

Avatars is like Home but with a lot less.. Home was planned first
by teh not so 1337 g@m3r - 2008-12-11 13:12:57
and completely unrelated

The only thing Microsoft copied is themselves. Avatars have been around since the MSN messenger days...
by ShinbuSK - 2008-12-11 13:13:29
ohh

ohh but of course "MiiS".. i mean Avatars are original :)

"If you buy a gaming machine, Game on it. You want to walk around a virtual environment, go to second life or something." Home isn't something to have a "second life" in, its more of a chat room. If you have friends or a clan in a game you can sit in there and have fun while playing the little mini games they have while chatting. Another use for Home is talking with friends in different states. Its not like I can go to my friends house in New Jersey if I'm sitting in Florida, if we both have PS3's why not meet up in Home? Theres lots of different uses for Home, you shouldn't look at it in the narrow way of only living another life in it like second life. People who do that may be social outcasts, but theres always lots who aren't and are just there to hang out and chat with their PSN buddies and clan. The way I see Home is like a 3D version of an instant messenger.
by Binary - 2008-12-11 13:29:46
meh

I don't care for all the fancy avatars, (ok maybe I do like to dress him up) Videos, Pictures, Media Center, Web browser, Music Storage. All I want is to pick up and play the damn game already.
by ISOHaven - 2008-12-11 13:30:01
WTF!?!?!?!?!

That's true. I only know two people with a PS3 so it would at least be kinda kewl to run around Home with them once in a while....if it didn't suck so bad. Eh, who knows, maybe they'll suprise us and have fixed more bugs then I could have ever imagined.
by ISOHaven - 2008-12-11 13:32:08
WTF!?!?!?!?!

"Avatars have been around since the MSN messenger days..." Long before that! One of the new features of AOL 2.0 had a way to add an image to your profile.

lol

Coming from nintendo who copied avatars from previous PC messaging programs made years before them?
by Shatterdome - 2008-12-11 17:17:11
Why?

are people talking to other people on forums and blogs such as this on the internet ? When you could go to a coffee house and try and have a conversation with someone and get a strange look and be told to leave them alone ? Microsoft IS pissy, and in these times what is better then a free platform to play some very casual games ? I sat around with a friend just (a real one) just shooting ***** and playing bowling and passing the controller back and forth and laughing at the some of the tards on Home....was fun, didn't cost a thing, and kept us out of the -25C weather outside.... So go screw yourselves...
by Shatterdome - 2008-12-11 17:21:02
For one...

Not every 360 user has 3 gigs of space to set aside for it....Lots of people picking up 360's now are getting arcade units because they are so damned cheap. But I will agree, MS probably could hand the the strain on their servers alot better than Sony has been able to...
by Shatterdome - 2008-12-11 17:22:37
But somehow....

Reading and posting messages on a blog is totally productive.... ? haha....
by Fujin - 2008-12-11 18:24:43
Ahhhh...

Yea... We're in 2008 and the 360 is an outdated DVD playing gaming system with PC graphics also from 2005... See any hypocrisy? That comment almost sounded like a Cali girl saying "OMG! That's so 2005!"

who

Nintendo probably copy off yahoo messenger.
by Binary - 2008-12-11 18:59:04
for the people thats b!itching about copying off Mii's

Windows Live Messenger http://www.wee-mee.com who made this? Microsoft! Proof? http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?image=capturess2.jpg Yahoo Messenger http://avatars.yahoo.com Who made this? are you kidding? Yahoo! Proof? http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?image=capturezn4.jpg So why do you guys wanna p!ss and moan at microsoft? hell without them, we probbly have to use *****ty mac and linux. you wont get better support then Windows (XP that is). Only thing Microsoft wants us to enjoy a new gaming experience. without them, we wont have acheviements, Online support, DLC, Headset where you talk to your friends. Where did Sony get the idea of copying Trophies from? XBOX! Where did Sony get the idea of copying PSN from? XBOX MOFOING LIVE. End of rant. cant bull***** and feed any wood to the flames
by HIMFan - 2008-12-11 21:04:10
To Binary.

ACTUALLY. XBox wasnt the first to have online play, nor was it the first to have addon content for games. It was just the first and only to ever CHARGE for the horse$hit that they supply. Quite frankly we can compare the Miis, Avatars, and Home because of the fact that they're ALL trying to do the same thing. But Sony did it the best. Hands down. Now everybody be quiet, please, I'm trying to sleep. :)

Windows feels like 1992 tech in 2008 with a skin pulled on
by thefinalhero - 2008-12-12 08:12:26
@Teh not so 1337 Gamer

Then how is that any different from any game? I know plenty of people who have the ability to go to a mall, or movie or anything like that, but instead opt out of it and instead go home and play Gears of War 2, Halo, Warhawk, etc. And it's not just people with no lives and super nerds, I knew Jocks in high school who would make plans with friends to play Halo 3 online instead of normal things. The fact is that going online and interacting there is much more time convenient, cost effective, and sometimes even more enjoyable, so in times like these when everything costs what it does because of the economy, it's becoming normal to do things like play games instead of going out. Just look at facebook, myspace, or any other social networking site, there are people that spend most of their time on them talking with friends, using apps etc, when they could spend just as much time actually hanging out. On a side note, I think Microsoft and Sony need to shut up. Yeah, 360 may be leading now, so what? The 360 is a purchase, though it plays music and videos and such, outside the elite, nobody is going to use it to store large amounts of that stuff, the PS3 is an investment, it has all the same functions (hopefully they make the communication features more like Live's) as the 360, and because of firmware updates can patch anything to make it better, so it has more longevity. Blu Ray has become the new standard in High Def physical media, and also functions as the best Blu Ray player on the market, sooner or later, people will need to buy a Blu Ray player for High Def home theater viewing. It also has enough HDD space to actually store a fair amount of media on it. So MS, stop trying to talk ***** to try and scare Sony into dropping the PS3 price and hurting any profit that they receive, it's not going to work. Also, don't be so bold as to insult Home's similarities to Second Life and then getting offended when people NXE's pretty much exact copy of the Mii. And also, don't talk about things not living up to their expectations when first released, I'm sure nobody expected their 360 to be created out of piss poor components that failed a third of the time resulting in Red Rings when it was first released, and...wow, 2005 to 2008, the same lifespan as the 360, and they STILL haven't completely solved the Red Ring issue, guess you sacrificed fixing a problem using better components in order to drop your prices... Okay, my rant is over.
by thefinalhero - 2008-12-12 08:21:48
Wait...not done, Sony, your turn.

I like my PS3 as any 360 player loves their 360, but I have a bone to pick with Sony as well. Sony...you need to start shelling out more cash. Having the most technologically advanced system doesn't mean much when you're constantly losing exclusives or DLC, even games altogether (I'm looking at your Star Ocean), and the game library is at best "On Par" with the 360's. It's not enough for me when it's basically a waiting game hoping for things to get better, and though you have a strong lineup coming up, as an RPG gamer, I'm not impressed. You should have at least shelled out more money to fight and keep Final Fantasy exclusive... So start putting up some money, pay Devs extra as compensation for learning/using the system tools for the PS3, start fighting to keep systems, and actually start putting up a fight against Microsoft.

DVD's are not out dated you douche bag. PC Games still uses it, people still buying regular dvds. 360 plays better graphics than my friends gaming rig. (Quard Core. Geforce 9600 SLI w/ HDMI on a 52 inch 1080p screen)

I not talking about about PC and PS2 multiplayer but the thing is, there was no good online support take keep dumb ass lamers from laging our games and cheating. oh yeah ban hamer will work but unplug your modem and re-plug it in will let them get back in there and ***** your ***** up. If you guys hate Microsoft that bad, why are you still using/dual windows for?
by lllegal Machine - 2008-12-12 13:20:02
"OMG! That's so 2005!"

So even with the so-called "outdated" DVD tech and PC graphics, multi-plat games on PS3 are still inferior and suck ass. So much for the super advanced cell processer and Blow-Ray drive.
by thefinalhero - 2008-12-12 18:57:07
If you think someone "copied" the idea of a console that can go online...

Then X box copied the Dreamcast.
