Good news, adventure fans. It turns out that Syberia 3 wasn't an April Fools prank after all! The PC release is a sure thing according to Microids prez Emmanuel Olivier, but there's still some questions about a possible PS3 version. Why? Because of Sony.

In a long press release/call to arms, Olivier accused Sony of "censuring" (I think he means "censoring") Microids in the past by denying a US PS2 release for Syberia 2 and a dozen other Microids titles. Furthermore, Olivier said that Sony demanded "exorbitant royalties" which have amounted to more than half of Microids' turnover for the PS2.

The statement also asked all fans of the Syberia series to rally and support Microids in convincing Sony to "change its rules". Here's the press release in its entirety:

Paris, April 17, 2009 - Following the countless messages and questions from fans which followed our announcement on April 1st regarding the launch of Syberia 3, Emmanuel Olivier, President of Microïds, gives more details on that announcement.

"Syberia 3 is not an April Fool's joke. The game is highly expected by the community of fans of adventure games and fans of Kate Walker and it will be launched, it is one of our most strategic projects at Microïds and we have been anticipating it for a long time.

It will be released on PC for sure, however, on PS3, this could actually turn into an April FoolÂ’s joke because SONY is the only decision-maker on this point, as strange as it may seem to some people.

Benoît Sokal, the author of Syberia and Syberia 2, has mentioned several times in the press that he would only participate in a sequel to his masterpiece if he had enough financial means to design and develop an exceptional title. Today Microïds is ready to invest in this ambitious production. But everyone knows that to amortize the development costs of a major video game with that level of quality, it is essential to develop it for multiple platforms, PC and consoles.

However Sony Computer Entertainment has already censured Microïds in 2003 by denying that Syberia was released on PS2 in the United States though it had previously been released in Europe on that console. The same refusal happened for a dozen other Microïds titles for the U.S.

Beyond this censorship of the authors and their producers who believe in their creations and who take the financial risks when building up productions for the console without knowing whether they will be approved or denied by SONY in the last minute, the exorbitant royalties demanded by SONY to manufacture the games on its consoles seriously hamper the financing ability of independent producers. Microïds has paid more than 15 million Euros of royalties to SONY for its entire catalog, which represents 55% of the Microïds turnover for this platform. April Fools? Well no! It is unfortunately the "rule of the game" imposed by SONY.

The revenue shortfalls due to the PS2 games we were not able to sell in the United States, a highly significant territory, coupled with the excessive royalties paid to SONY for the European territories, have so far prevented Microïds from having the ability to reinvest in an ambitious sequel to the Syberia series.

So today we launch an SOS to all fans of the Syberia series: let us rally to support the independent creation and convince Sony to change its rules. Send all your messages of support to: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

SYBERIA 3 on PS3, an April FoolÂ’s? ItÂ’s up to SONY!"

I mean, *why* did Sony "censure" them --if that's true? Is it possible their Syberia 2 story went over-the-line with adult and controversial themes that Sony didn't deem appropriate for the American audience? ---Doesn't Nintendo have an even tighter leash on content produced for their system?

I don't know, sounds a bit like this guy is trying to engineer lower royalties through scamming. I find it really hard to believe that they would have paid Sony 55% of their sales in royalties. 55%? ....If that's true, why would they even *bother* to deal with Sony at all?

The unprofessionali sm of Mr Olivier's tirade puts the whole thing under suspect, IMHO.

some of that is pure BS, i believe the censorship, but royalties, yeah right, every company has a history of not letting games on there systems, sony said no to svc chaos, nintendo said no to pretty much every serious bloody game, and microsoft said no to any game that wouldnt pony up the dough :)

I was thinking the same thing, MS has a far worse reputation for high royalties

# It's up to Sony?*****bandit 2009-04-18 02:05
Okay so if it's up to Sony, great. Listen to me then Sony, keep this garbage reserved for the trash bin. Microids? Never heard of em, must be some kinda new-age hemmoroids(sp?). This company's cry for help is laughable. If I was Sony I'd give them money to keep this game off of the PS3, and then I'd tell em to take Fail 2, no wait I mean Sacred 2 with them. If this is suppose to be news, then let's start hearing about Hannah Montana the videogame.

There have been 4billion random little games made and published by tiny studios for the PS2 and I never heard whining from them...

That and teh PS3 may be diff. I bet sony is trying to get all the titles they can. Hope sony releases a response.

That aside, YAY!!!!!!!! I LOVED the first two Syberia games and can't wait for another! If the PS3 gets shafted I'll just get it for PC!

Just because you've never heard of the development company Microids doesn't give you the right to bash them. They have been making superb point/click adventure titles for the PC (and occasionally other platforms) for years. Benoit Sokal, a well known and immensely talented author is behind all of their stories and does a magnificent job at it.

So **** off with your Hanna Montanna sh** and go broaden your game library with some great titles and stop attacking others because of your complete idiocy.

# So thanks...*****bandit 2009-04-18 13:37
Actually I feel because I haven't heard of them it gives me ALL the right in the world to bash them. LOL point and click doesn't sound like a "superb" adventure. The only point and click games I liked were the Clock Tower games, but only then it was because of the mystery/story. I look at those games now and realeze that'ss all they offer: story. True great games offer a full package, not one aspect of anything good. Talented author you say? I say send me the script then. Save the stories for books or movies or Law + Order. Just saying there are better games/series that offer gameplay, depth, great graphics AND story. Broaden my game library with great games? Odin Sphere, Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile 1 + 2. Soul Calibur 4, SFIV. I have my hands full thank you very much, Don't have time to waste my money on the doo doo this company calls a game. Hah me ignorant? I guess by your logic I should be calling everyone ignorant who hasn't played one lf my favorite games. But I wouldn't go that far. I'd say maybe somebody is missing out.
