Michael Pachter: SCEA having inventory problems, won't announce 40GB until 60GB is sold out

Michael Pachter - Image 1Sony Computer Entertainment Australia already talked about phasing out 60GB PS3 SKUs to make way for newer 40GB stock, and SCEs from other regions have mentioned the 40GB as well. However, we're still not hearing anything from Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA), so what's their game plan? Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has his own guess about what's happening:

These rolling announcements suggest to me that Sony has an inventory control problem, with too many unsold 60GB units out there, and they don't want to have to cut the price to clear them.

If Pachter's prediction is dead-on, there's two things that Sony can do to ease this inventory problem: SCEA may either wait until the 60GB stocks run out before they formally announce the existence of 40GB, or just speed up the process by bundling 60GB PS3 SKUs with a game and even an extra controller.

40GB PS3's won't have backwards compatibility, but Pachter said that it wouldn't matter. He explained that people wouldn't care about backwards compatibility if they bothered to wait long enough before they bought a PS3.

» Shouldn't this be a rumor?

You have a MS employee guessing at why SCEA hasn't introduced a 40gig model in NA.

Well - I don't know about the rest of people but with two less usb ports, no backwards compatibility, and lack of memory card reader - I wouldn't buy a 40 gig if it was all they sold. I think it was a foolish move.

Different models of the same system means that developers will consider the base model and that's about it.

It may also mean that I will never be able to play guitar hero on the ps3. And, if sony stops updating firmware with compatibility fixes I will be very upset.

» Dumb

Saying "people wouldn't care about backwards compatibility if they bothered to wait long enough before they bought a PS3" is pretty dumb. I know I waited a while before taking a dive into XP SP2 on my computer, and am now waiting to get Vista. Why? Because I waited (and am waiting) to see how much backwards compatibility improves! Besides, the longer something is around, the less the average consumer seems to know about it. I bet come this holiday season there will be some confused and mad parents who bought the PS3 and a few games and then wondered why their PS2 games don't work on it. They'll be thinking "the PS2 could play PS1 games, so why doesn't this PS3 play PS2 games??" I hope Sony doesn't shoot themselves in the foot this holiday season, because some cool titles are due for the platform, but if there aren't enough units out there then those games won't sell very well...

» silly

I work in a games shop in England and everyone who comes in asking for a PS3 asks specifically for the 60GB version, and when I asked them why, each one said it was for the backwards compatibility.

Sony are making a mistake throwing up the 40GB version without it. The lack of memory card readers and only 2 USB ports is one thing, but customers really seem adament that being able to play their PS2 games on it is a clincher.

» Who really cares about backward comp?

I mean, did you paid 500$ to end up playing ps1 or ps2 games? If so, you really need to consult, since the ps2 cost 100$ and WOW, you can even play ps1 on it...

Anyway, those who didn't have a ps1/ps2 won't wanna play now since the graphics are outdated, and those who had those won't wanna play since they already finished the games on those OR because they still have those consoles...

Everybody is making a crisis out of nothing!! Man, I'm sick of hearing this! Who really wanna pay all this money for backwayd compatibility? And why nobody is saying that for their xbox 360, I mean, on the x360, the core CANNOT play xbox games, and the premium can play about 1/1000 of what the ps3 can play on ps2 alone!

If you think you'll play a lot of ps2/ps1 games, buy a ps2! This way, you'll enjoy the ps2/ps1 games while waiting for the ps3's price to drop! This is wonderful is it not? That way, you'll have plenty of fun playing games for years (there is about 3k titles on ps1 alone...) and when you'll finish all of those (or the best of those, that mean about 100 PS2 titles (I have 97)), the ps3 will cost 100$, then you buy it and play the ps3 till you finish all the good games, and by the time tou finish them, the ps4 is 100$, rince and repeat...

OR you buy a ps3, and you buy ps3 games!

And anyway, the 80g model can play perfectly the best PS2 and PS1 games, so unless you wanna play some ergeiz on PS1 (the game was okay... but I don't remember how you spell it...) you're crazy! Just stop this Nostalgia of playing and playing the same game over... EVOLVE (like the game where you are a fish, then you evolve non-stop till dinosaurs, then animals, etc).

Oh, and by the way, if you wanna play BOTH (ps3 AND ps1 AND ps2 games... then err, I don't know, but HOW THE HELL with you pay all those games anyway, it's like 60$ per PS3 games!!! if you have that money, buy EVERY consoles, from PS3 to x360 passing by the wii, and if you really want it, a ps2!)

ps: If you have a good PC, there is a ps1 emulator, and there is a PS2 emulator too! (the ps2 emulator is way worse than the ps3 80g emulator so it's not really a good thing, the ps3 80g can already run a lot of titles anyway).

PPS: Could you tell me, right next to my post, that you don't have a ps2, and that you wanna play ps2 games and that they are not in the 80g compatibility list? If yes, I'm ashamed to see that some people didn't buy the ps2... YOU HAD 6 years to do so! Don't you love videogames? I suppose not.. that's why you're making me post crappy comments, arguying with people who prefer arguying over useless info, making crysis out of the blues, instead of playing videogames...

Sorry if I got way too much INTO the subject, sorry if I offended someone, I'm like that, always in crysis (this remind me of... no, joking), always upset about everything that gets on my nerves! Anyway, I'm an hardcore gamer, and the lacks in compatibility do not affect me at all. Same for my friend who play videogames one time per week or less, who want a 40g since he don't care about the other functions, he just wanna play. But he STILL have a ps2! (sorry again).

man, this suc**, now everybody's gonna reply this to insult me... some without talking the time to read, I'm sure... Anyway, at least I've got my own opinion, not like some people! (sorry again).

» I agree....

I've used the limited BC on my 360 about 3 times, for a total of like 2 hours....I coulda did without it all together.

However, people will make huge fusses over just about anything. You said why do people not say anything about 360, well they did at the begining of the "war", but people got over it...as i'm sure they will for PS3 as well....

I just don't understand why they are removing it when it's just software....

» only one good thing

about the bc is that it does upscale 'some' ps2 games, but not enough to warrant buying ps2 games for the ps3 anyway!! i mean, burnout 3:takedown, i thought was awesome on the ps3 through upscaling, but gt4 was poor with the upscaling!!! i wouldnt lose too much sleep over it!!!
