Michael Pachter: PS3 July sales higher than Xbox 360's

Michael Pachter: PS3 beat the Xbox 360 last month in sales - Image 1

Analyst Michael Pachter from Wedbush Morgan Securities has predicted that the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 last July. While this can't be confirmed until NPD comes out with the official sales figures, it's worth noting that Pachter had made some pretty accurate predictions before.

He believes that 160,000 PlayStation 3s were sold last month compared to the 115,000 Xbox 360s. Pachter credits this surge of sales to two factors: the red ring of death and the price-cuts of the PlayStation 3. While this may be good news for Sony, the analyst also pointed out that the console industry is still being led by Nintendo with the Wii expected to rake in a whopping total of 330,000 consoles sold.

If Pachter's prediction does hold true, can the Sony sustain the momentum they've generated and, if possible, get even closer to the Wii's figures?

If in fact what Patcher's saying is true, this will just mean good things for the people that already own a PS3. More units moved will make these developers shut up who has been saying that making PS3 games is not profitable due to its install base. More units sold also means that more developers would be willing to make exclusive PS3 games.

yay the PS3 had one good month. The Xbox is still beating it everywhere! Xbox>PS3. We have great games like Halo 3 and Gears of War. That beats the PS3's MGS4, Folklore, Killzone 2, Heavenly Sword, FFXIII (and versus) and all the other crap comming out next year. Have fun playing that garbage, when I have Halo and Gears of war.

I have always enjoyed the Metal Gear series.

Even though I love my xbox 360, i think getting a ps3 console just for MGS4 is worth it.

However, that and GT5 would be like the only games i'd ever consider buying for it, i'm not a fan of other wierd japanaese games.

Download the RFoM demo and tell me that it isnt anywhere near as good as GoW.

I know you are pretty impartial on most 360 vs ps3 subject, but be honest. If you had to choose, which one would you choose?

MGS4 will be coming to 360, a man who editorializes by the name Mole has gotten inside info from a konami employee there is already a non-kojima led team working on the port. Its scheduled to be released a few months after the ps3 version.

If GT5 is anything like GTHD I would pass. The photos of the game look nice, but when youre actually playing it its a bore. One car races that feel like youre going 15 mph, no damage, and very few driving features (only two camera angles, absolutely nothing compared to the car features on Forza2). I dont see how any ps3 fan could brag about this game.

If I were you, I would just hold out on MGS for a bit and pick up PGR4 to calm your racing spirit.

Of course the 360 price cut is helping it this month but after Christmas, 360 won't have much of a lineup versus the PS3. I can guarantee you that the final game in the Metal Gear Solid series will not be available for purchase in the Xbox 360 console. The reason I decided not to make a multi release is because of poor sales of Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance on the original Xbox. The reason why I delayed the game to 2008 is because by the time my game is released there will be plenty of Playstation 3 units available and my company will be able to make a profit thus avoiding the need to port it to another console. Plus I am a man of my word and a huge Playstation fan.

'If GT5 is anything like GTHD I would pass' The GTHD demo was GT4 what has updated graphics for the E3 show(or one of them shows) just to show-off what the ps3 could do in graphics and loading times, in GT5 the cars from GTHD will be the same but game is being built from the ground up, the track from the demo, will not look like the final game. I agree track didnt look good and the people looked like models on a train set. The game will have more views only a new *****pit view as been shown at the mo, the game will have damage but slighty damage like on the bumps and wing-mirror, its a sim, its not about crashing the car.

Blu-ray is cheap on the ps3, cheaper than a player. Blu-ray was a good call by Sony, as devs. will have no problems with space limits. I bought my PS3 coz I know it will be good for the next 4 years, Xbox is starting to struggle with some future games(UT,COD4). As of right now, xbox is better for games and price. I just dont think the xbox can hold up till the next xbox.

I remember the time when the 360 was released. the 1st batch of games SUCKS!! The one worth playing was just Ridge Racer 6! stop flaming RFoM already! it's the 1st game for the ps3 and it is a good one!! I bought my ps3 yesterday and I'm telling you, for a starter, RFoM is awesome and congrats to Insomniac. I'm looking forward for Ratchet + Clank: Future. I believe it will be a very very good one for the ps3. 360's fans just shut up and keep playing your so called great game - Gears of War! I bet Halo 3 will not be as good as what you imagine!!

not so many people will want to play old games anymore! now, the war is towards new games and there are many people out there waiting for a game (or games) worth playing before they make their choice and in my opinion, ps3 is looking good to go for the win! M$ released 360 a year earlier than ps3 because they just want to take the lead in games library like what ps2 did to the original bulky xbox before even with the 360s at that time kept scratching the disc inside, overheating and even malfunctioning! even after a year, the system didn't improve and even already has a new problem - the red ring! it's cheaper but less reliablity! buy it if you want now - no worries because M$ is there ready to fix it for you!

Guys, all this arguing is the same old story.

In the early 80's it was commodore vs sinclair (timex for our US cousins), then it was Atari vs Amiga (the atari was out b4 the amiga and enjoyed better sales in the first few years - games were ported to the amiga but then the amiga really shone with its custom chips and outsold the atari - shame commodore could not market the thing), then in the 90's it was nintendo vs sega. Sony in the later 90's and early 00's had the market to itself so done well. I am a ps3 owner. I like the game lineup of the xbox but I feel, referring to the atari/amiga 'war', that the ps3 is technically superior and will be around longer.

At the end of the day both machines have their good points and bad points and should co exist happily. I also own a wii as this is a different beast. Its more of a social beast. Easy to play when friends come round. But as soon as they are gone it's back to the ps3 and a game of resistance.

"I had a crazy weekend last week. I was partying at this local club called "club booka" until s*it, maybe 3 or so. I got hammered. Poppin' pills, slammin' tequila shots, you name it. I don't remember how I got home. Anyway at some point during that night I must have gotten on ebay and bid (and paid for) a PS3 for some reason. I don't even remember it. But sure enough, after work yesterday, a package is sitting on my porch. "WTF is this?" I'm thinking. "I got a PS3 by mistake? No I never get anything for free." So I checked ebay and sure enough sometime that night I bought a PS3 for whatever reason I don't know why."

Well, maybe you shouldn't have been drinking so much since you hate the PS3.

"That's right, the most infamous PS3 skeptic of all time, Mister Common Sense, now owns a PS3!"

Is $550 really that much of a problem? I live in Europe and i had to shell out $850, but then again the Xbox costs $660 or something like that in europe.

*sigh* You haven't played the previous installments of the games have you? Did you know that GT HD is missing some of the features you could use in the previous installments? You can customize your components on the car, you can drive 700 cars, drive on 50 tracks etc.

Genji and Lair blow, and both got HORRIBLE reviews. Never even mention Genji, that game is a disgrace to Sony

Final Fantasy is getting old, and after 10 and 12 I'm convinced they can't make another good one.

I have PS2 , PSP going on PS3 now - I always look at the numbers for PS3 and they are increasing - just like PSP is blowing DS - PS3 will be blowing *****Box360 as soon as it ages in the market. Just wait to see it..I can feel it now!! I bought an Xbox ( yeah the first box that came out) and I played few games - Not worth the money! so I gave it away to my cousin after a month of play. X360 is going on the same direction as the original xbox sell first few months then drop like a brick after PS3 hits the market well. Not to say that the price will drop so there - MS will suffer the loss this time!
