MGS4 not reviewed and scored by EGM due to Konami's imposed restrictions

Solid Snake - Image 1 You remember that report we ran on Konami imposing restrictions on magazine reviews of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, right? We've got an update on that as we now see how the guys over at the print scene are reacting.

While some publications have decided to live with the Konami blockade and found ways to work around it, Electronic Gaming Monthly did not follow suit. The magazine's latest issue refused to review the big PlayStation 3 exclusive.

Instead, EGM published a five-page roundtable on the game with much praise for all the Hideo Kojima genius that went into it. That doesn't mean, though, that a few jabs weren't thrown. Particularly notable were some whines about its control system. Naturally, the game remains unscored with this magazine.

While it's still unclear why Konami decided to have restrictions on MGS4 reviews, the popular notion is that it concerns discussing the length of the cut scenes and and the game's install size on the PS3 hard drive.  Some believe that exposing these technical details might be viewed negatively by the public.

Used to be good. I haven't read an issue in a year or so, but they seem to always complain about the PS3s and PSP's controls no matter what game it is. I bet some noob who played the game for 1 minute complained about them. MGS4 will probably have great controls just like the rest of the games in the series...although Portable Ops did have horrible controls... -_-

I think Kojima doesn't want anyone to reveal the length of the cutscenes or plot details, for obvious reasons. They don't want to ward anyone off from the game, to maximize profit. It's understandable but EGM didn't have to be such crybabies about it.

» portable ops and psp

man i couldnt get into portable ops for a while because i found that control style too akward and advanced. left it alone for a year or so went back to it and i gotta say i love it now. not sure why i didnt like it before i probobly just didnt have proper camera settings. i wish all the metal gear games were like that.

» Not reviewed YET.

They are still going to review it but it will be in their next issue.

» meh.

The game was broken from the start. You just can't have a shooting game where different players have different stats such as Health, Stamina, Accuracy, etc. It unevens the playing field, and the game only gives you good soldiers if you play at the hardest difficulty, which takes far too long and caused many people to start hacking in the first place.

» Also....

I am not sure how telling how long the cutscenes are, and how much space the game requires you to install on the HDD says anything about the story......

It really doesn't matter, just by Konami releasing such an order they are pretty much admiting that the game takes up too much space on the HDD and might have excessive cutscenes (i'd say or maybe too little, but I doubt that)...

» Bloody silly if you ask me...

... telling reviewers that they're not allowed to .... REVIEW ?!?

by FreePlay - 2008-06-02 22:55
» Good.

I'm sick and tired of reviewers being given exclusive early access to games for reviewing. Not to mention that they usually get them for FREE, which is bound to skew their reviews.

» EGM..Evil

I stopped reading that mag when they started rating excellent games inappropriately . I had read PSM and they are OK with ratings. However, EGM always full of BS with their ratings - if it's not the graphics, or the music it's the controllers -which mos of the time it is, it's like if they were playing with their toes - Do you want a Toe Joystick EGM?

» QJ Mag anynone!?

We should start a QJ Mag to offer some true reviews.

Anyone?

» 2 things

EGM is horrible

and

The two main things konami blocked what the size of the install to the PS3's HD and the cutscenes which really have no effect on how you play or enjoy the game and thus have a completely legitimate reason to block such things from jarring a review.

It'd be like a car company releasing a new car, a car mag reviewing it and then refusing to review it because the color of the paint job wasn't their favorite color and they disliked the logos placed on the manual. It's got nothing to do with the car what so-ever.

Yes, to you it doesn't matter how much space the game takes up on your HDD or how long the cutscenes are.

BUT, these are things that people always *****ed and nagged about in the past with other games, for unknown reasons.

I guess people just want to have a reason to pick on the PS3 games. People just blow this whole thing out of proportion.

Every PS3 has a HDD so there is no reason for developers to not include this functionality. However, people being biased *****faces nowadays, they compare it to other consoles which don't have this luxury and start badmouthing the console which does have said luxury because the other console doesn't.

Makes no sense, but it happens, apparently.

Well I understand Konami's point on this one.

» That's an interesting idea

Maybe that's something we should look into, perhaps with reviews not only by the staff here at QJ.NET but also from the community.

Cliched as it might sound, I kinda like the idea "For Gamers, By Gamers" especially when it comes to reviews.

» Thing is...

in the PS3's case, it's not a luxury, it's a neccesity in order to have decent load times...

So Kojima said that even 50gb was not enough space for his this game, so what if the game comes with an install disc and a play disc....and the install disc takes up 20gb.....is that a good thing ? Something I want to look forward to ? No....I have and still do buy consoles so I do not have to install games....just pop em in and play em....

by Aces In The Palm - 2008-06-03 17:04
» actually

thing is your pop and play disappears when you consider the sheer size of the disc

xbox360 will never have this problem because of the 8.5GB limit of the media

ps3 however with 50gb and more in future would have unbearable load times if no installation took place

id personally hate to play GTA4 on ps3 if it didnt install
