MGS4 developer: Dualshock 3 more advanced than Dualshock 2

DualShock - Image 1We've reported recently that the rumble feature on Sony's new DualShock 3 will be using DualShock 2 technology, so it's natural to expect the same old rumble as before in the newest version of our beloved rumbling PlayStation controllers.

However, Kojima Production's Ryan Payton stated otherwise, saying that the rumble features on the new DualShock 3 is definitely more advanced than its predecessor. When asked if the rumble in DualShock 3 is better, Payton said "Absolutely, yeah. I mean, it feels better." He also added that aside from the MGS4 team, other developers such as those working on Devil May Cry 4  received tools for them to add rumble to their games.

This comes to mind one of the comments in our past article, where QJ reader Gitaroo quoted another site in saying that in the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots TGS demo one can tell from which direction the vibration came from, based on what part of the controlled vibrated. Interesting, that.

Is DualShock 3 truly something to look forward to (aside from the usual Ye Olde Rumble), then? Sit tight as we gather more information!

» hmm...

Good to heir it but I guess somewhere said the new rumble will feel in differents part of the controller... but anyway is good to have the rumble in metal gear because it will be weird to play metal gear without it...

» what people are saying,

is that this new controller let's you feel directional vibration. So if there's an explosion to the right of you, then the right side of the controller will rumble more than the left. This is what non-Sony people are reporting, saying that it's definitely different, and I don't really know why Sony would deny such a thing.

maybe they didn't think anyone cared and just through in that new feature for the hell of it and didn't think anyone would care much for it.

most thrid party developers probably just use the same code as the 360 version of the games. Which is probably why IGN and gs said they feel just like before. Touch Sense is suppose to be backward compatible.

» actually

I can't wait until Spring. I knew this was coming so I put off buying more controllers. I'm probably going to import a few from Japan when they come out in November and pay the extra $10 for shipping. Wait if I did that, would they work on my PS3?

» Yeah you could pay for importing them but you will

have to wait for the patch to play with rumble in your games, so dual shock 3 controllers won't be very useful in USA nor UK until release, even if you import one from japan because you will need to patch your PS3 for your games to work with the rumble feature, which won't work till Spring for USA.

They will release the patch for US games for rumble feature in spring of 08 but until then importing dual shock 3 is useless, I was thinking of doing it aswell.

I am still gonna do it but first I am gonna get the weightless one cause I like weightless controllers. I mean the one thats out right now.

Obvious that dualshock 3 would be more advance they had 6 years to make it so, i can't see how this is a surprise to anyone. Technology grows with time thats how it works.

» That's what I'm going to do

Screw sony making us wait another 6 months when they should be here already.

I heard the vibration wasn't as strong in the dualshock 3.
