METAL GEAR SOLID 4 hits Platinum on March 5th - Image 1

Konami just sent out a press release announcing that that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will be hitting the Platinum Range on March 5. What does that mean? It means the game's going to get a reduced price tag, and a shiny new wrapping.

A game needs to have sold a minimum number of copies before getting the Platinum distinction, so MGS4's 4.5 million units isn't just a big number to impress people. All in all, the entire Metal Gear series already sold 26.5 million.

No word yet if MGS4 will receive the equivalent Greatest Hits distinction in North America, though it already feels like a given. When MGS4 officially gets the Platinum honor, it will get a EUR 29.95 (US$ 38) price tag. So if you haven't bought the game yet, then you can wait a month more if you want to save on a few bucks, and if you want the shiny new cover.

Already?

I think that they should have waited for the 1 year mark(3). Whatever though, I wanted the collector's edition, I have it and have played the hell out of it. And MGO of course.

!

Why on Earth do you think they should've waited? What an odd comment! This can only be a good thing for everyone concerned!

Is it just me...

Is it just me that dislike the yellow on the platinum titles? Why can't they have black/silver like they did with the PSX/PS2? I would rather have the original case than the platinum one, all because of the yellow which ruins everything.

hmmm...

You're totally right. It just reminds me of when movies leaving the theaters started seeing shorter and shorter times until they hit the shelves. People no longer "had" to see their movie in the theater as it would be available to watch at home in just a few months - not a year. I think that it contributed, but not solely, to the movie theater business. You are right though, was kind of an odd comment. : \

Yes

I totally despise the "platinum" packaging. At first I thought the NA "Greatest Hits" for ps3 was alright from screen shots but when I found out they were not semi transparent I liked them less, but still more than the yellow "platinum"s

...

I thought you may have been right so I had to check it out. Apparently on day one it sold over 3 million copies alone! http://www.konami.com/news/article6.php

I agree

I just bought the pre-platinum version of Oblivion - Game of the Year edition for my girlfriend from ebay recently cos I could only find the platinum version in stores and I wanted the case to match the others on my shelf

....

Less than 16 million? The sales are approx. at 20 Million!

by Rei64 - 2009-02-16 17:51:16
hats off to sony and konami for this because

there are games for x box that have been out for years that should rightfully be 40 dollars on the greatest hits but are not. yeah you can find them for cheap online sometimes but it should just be a greatest hit. gears of war 1 just got a price cut and it was out for 2 years and im sure it sold more than enough to warrant a greatest hit release. i understand the companies need to make money too but don't set parameters for something and then not follow it. come on microsoft.. give me some price cuts.

Good thing you did

I bought Resistance greatest hits version because it was the cheapest one I could fine. I hated the way it looked with all my other regular games on the shelf so much I bought another, regular copy.

i doubt it

but i agree with u this games replay value would multiply with some trophies

by StingBlah - 2009-02-22 11:28:16
you're joking right?

1. Which idiot deserves my wrath for returning this masterpiece? 2. This game, if you can call it that, is EPIC. It's the ONLY game I've ever bought the day it came back, and I haven't looked back. It seriously gave me a new definition for the words "brave" and "heroic." I would never buy this game used. Hideo Kojima deserves every penny of profit he makes from a NEW game sale, and then some.
