Rockstar Games Announces Max Payne 3 for Winter 2009 - Image 1

I have an awful crick in my neck.

Despite the critical calamity that is the Max Payne movie, the video game arm of the franchise is still going strong.

Rockstar Games has sent out a press release announcing that they're planning to release Max Payne 3 by Winter of this year for both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. This marks Payne's first entry in this generation of consoles. And about time too.

The press release gave a few clues on what to expect in this new installment to the franchise, describing a broad overview of the plot's premise:

Since leaving the NYPD and New York itself behind, Max has drifted from bad to worse. Double-crossed and a long way from home, Max is now trapped in a city full of violence and bloodshed, using his weapons and instincts in a desperate search for the truth and a way out.

Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games, gives further clues, saying

We're starting a new chapter of Max's life with this game. This is Max as we've never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of Max Payne 2 and witness his last chance for salvation.

This is great! I loved the first one because it was one of the few games where things didn't disappear. If you killed someone, the body would stay, never would it just disappear. I still haven't played the second one but hopefully it is like the first and hopefully this one will be too.

» Wrong R* did not make Max Payne.

Remedy made both Max Payne 1 and 2 for the PC. They were later ported to PS2/xbox by Rockstar's Vienna and Toronto studios.

That aside, I'm rather excited for a new max payne! The first way great but the second just amped everything up, especially the story telling. Long live the father game of bullet time done right.

Max Payne 1 is probably one of the best games i've ever played, (i rarely play single player games because i'm into multiplayer online). It was really atmospheric, with the voice and the music, and the whole graphic novel/comic book type parts made it perfect.

Max Payne 2 wasn't nearly as good, different controls, different look and feel to it.

So far Rockstar seem to know a thing or two about making games, so i think it's in good hands.
