Marvel Comics - Image 1Looks like that recently announced Marvel MMO game is still quite a ways off. Marvel Comics bigwig Simon Philips reveals that the team is aiming for a 2012 release. But why take that long? According to him, they're planning to make it coincide after the rush of Marvel movies to hit theaters.

This seems to be the thread of thought they're trying to aim for - to release the game after the Avengers movie (scheduled for 2012), which comes after the Captain America, Thor, and Spider-man 4 movies (all in 2011), which come after Iron Man 2 (next year), which comes after X-Men Origins: Wolverine (this May!). Talk about a huge build up.

Aside from allowing us to busy ourselves with movies while we wait, part of it's actually due to development reasons.

See, the game is still in its very early stages. Here's Philips discussing more on the topic:

It sounds like a long way away, but itÂ’s not. WeÂ’ve got to create, together with [game publisher] Gazillion Entertainment, that environment that is going to be a totally immersive experience and a perpetual storytelling experience as well.

Every day, every week, and every month, there is a new element of technology that comes about. So whatever plans we had for an MMO two years ago have now evolved to embrace that new technology.

WeÂ’re looking at lots of different scenarios. But at this moment in time we havenÂ’t identified exactly what the end game is going to be. WeÂ’re still working on the different variations that are potentially possible.

By 2012, rivaling DC Universe Online may have already been released. DC's own MMO is already scheduled for a release next year.

The yet-to-be-given-a-formal-title Marvel MMO is currently planned to be released for PCs and consoles - presumably the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Yeah cos Iron Man made more money and won more awards than the Dark Knight. Oh wait.. it didn't.

I like characters from both comic companies but I'm definitely more a DC man. Will always prefer the Justice League to the Avengers.

I think Thor's slightly better known in mainstream than Deadpool or Cable. He's been around a lot longer and is an Avenger anyways. Deadpool is in X-Men Origins : Wolverine so maybe if he's popular in that he'll get his own spin off.

I hope Carnage ain't in Spidey 4. I'd rather a villain with some depth instead of a shallow one-dimensional serial killer. Doctor Octopus has been my favorite of the movie versions of Spidey's rogues. They actually made him likable and made him seem more tragic to me whereas before I never much liked the character.

"Comic Movies" are way too overrated.

How exactly do you do a marvel universe MMO? Would would that be like? 103 Wolverines running around? Or build your own superhero.... oo-oo-ooh. Select your superpower from a drop down menu. That's not going to suck at all.
