As the highly-anticipated shooter Unreal Tournament 3 (PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Mac) nears its PlayStation 3 timed-exclusive debut, fans of the franchise have been pondering just how much performance Epic has squeezed out on the game for their Sony next-gen console.

The reaction towards the hands-on demonstration at the E3 Media & Business Summit was all in favor for the title, especially on the part of IGN, who hailed the game as a runner up under "best PlayStation 3 shooter." Epic Games' vice president Mark Rein sat with Joystiq at the recently concluded Develop Conference & Expo at Brighton and laid down the techie PS3 specifics: the current HD resolution and frame rate that Unreal Tournament 3 could spew.

"720p resolution, which is what we planned to do, and it was running at least 30fps when I last saw it," said Rein. He commented a while earlier on how well Sony representatives have aided their PlayStation 3 optimization process.

And progress with the PlayStation 3-optimized Unreal Engine 3 was smoother than before - so much smoother, in fact, that Rein stated, "It took us a year [to improve Unreal Engine 3] after Xbox 360 and here we are less than a year after PlayStation 3 and I'd say that today Unreal Tournament 3 runs better on PS3 than Gears did on Xbox 360 at the same point in its development."

Regarding mods, experienced and aspiring modders will have to consider a platform choice when purchasing Unreal Tournament 3. Even if Epic does succeed in getting mod compatibility to run on the Xbox 360 - a possibility that only Microsoft and its stand on closed Xbox Live can dictate - modders will still have to purchase the PC version to create any mods. Rein assures mods will be playable on the PlayStation 3, but not spruced up on the console.

» lOl free online and user mods versus what?

60 dollars to do the same thing for a year minus user mods? Hmmmm the free online and user generated content could put M$ in a tight spot (in the future that is).

» nice!!

Finally a first person shooter for a console that you can use Mods on! Thats gonna be siiick, for $60 you could play tons of mods making it basically tons of games in one.

I wonder if this means that they won't slow down the PS3 version like originally mentioned. I remember they said they might make the console versions slower because it's too crazy to play with just a controller. I mean, either way it would be good, but I think it would be great if it stayed all frantic like the old games.

» Flamebait to fanboys perhaps

Just interesting info to those with a brain however. ;)

It's great to see they're up to speed on the PS3. Hence I expect we'll see no difference bettween the 360 and PS3 versions visually, but it would be interesting to see how the console versions compare to the PC version.

I'm also interested in how the controls compare, since although a mouse and keyboard are better for FPSs, a controller should be better for controlling vehicles.

Long time ago Mark Rein said mouse and keyboard can be used on PS3. On the 360 i don't know.

» heh only 30fps...

yah its definantly slower if it only runs at 30fps, on the pc full speed is concidered to be 60fps

by Nine876 - 2007-08-04 07:03
» No he didn't nes

This has never been confirmed by Mark or anyone at Epic, and everytime he has spoken of UT3 (previously UT2007), he has spoken of controller for the consoles and m+k for the PC and the differences between them.

by Nine876 - 2007-08-04 08:34
» But there is news nes...

Mark hadn't confirmed m+k support in the PS3 version, that is, not until yesterday :)

(change the plus to equals in the link to get it to work)

» trolls always come out...

Currently runs at 30...which is considered a massive leap towards a final version. You can barely perceive above 30, much less 60. This isn't finished, just an indicator of progress. Go back under your bridge now.

» Flamebait?

From the developer of Gears? Against Gears? ...probably not.

» FPS+/+speed

That means the screen will be updated less often--not that the action will be half the pace. FPS is only a performance issue when the console isn't matching what it's supposed to be doing--and that only happens on PCs. Have fun with your choppy game, ;)

» Nice to hear that

» Alright kids

30fps? Are they insain? Thats *****ing horrible, chop anyone?

720p resolution? Why not 1080p or at least 1080i like the 360? Fail again.

And personally, ***** this *****. Getting the PC version cause I am not looking for "tweaked for performance" crap on the consoles. Poor console *****s above have to live with this crap. Isn't it funny how history repeats itself?
