Mark Rein on Unreal Tournament 3: optimized, not compromised, for each platform |
Ó
It's not that because a game is coming out on three platforms - the PS3, Xbox 360, and the PC in this case - a game would be compromised to the lowest common denominator, or that the other versions can't keep up. Rather, as Mark Rein tells GamePro, Epic Games is committed to making sure that each of the versions of Unreal Tournament 3 is optimized for each platform it will appear on.So it doesn't matter if a PC can hold 2GB of RAM and the PS3 and Xbox 360 has only a smaller amount of memory to play with. Rather, each platform presents its own challenges:
The big difference is you have 'one.' There's one kind of machine for PS3, there's one kind of machine for Xbox 360. So whatever power there is, you can completely exploit it, and you can customize it for that particular CPU, that particular graphics chip, and that particular bandwidth. So you can dig very deeply into the hardware. Whereas on the PC, you wrote a game that was perfectly 100% optimized only for Nvidia, and only for dual-core, you wouldn't sell very many copies of that game. Invariably, you have to have a game that can scale a across a large range of hardware.
It is quite the workload for them - Mark did mention that while they would love a platform-simultaneous launch for UT3, but "it's too early to tell if we can pull that off logistically and in terms of manpower." Heck, they'd love to get UT3 out in 2007, but Epic wants the game to be as perfect as perfect can be, so Mark offers: "when it's done."
Oh, and on the question of doubting development, GamePro's Vicious Sid "was surprised to see UT3 running as smoothly as it was on the PS3." Mark replied, "People have this weird misconception that [the game] can't run as well on the PS3 as it can on other platforms. You just got to give us time to do it." A clear message to the doubters.

Thats a pretty respectable game developer right there!!! =)
2008 it is....
That's fine, I didn't want this and Halo 3 to be out at/near the same time...
So is this optimized for the Core system?
I am looking forward to this one!
By his commenst he just means that main hardware (Ie chipsets, CPU, GPU) are all the same in the consoles whereas the PCs all have different hardware configurations.
That's how it should be. Unlike Cliffy B who talks trash about Gears being impossible on the PS3, which is a load of crap since UT3 is going to be even more demanding hardware wise than Gears was. he's not kissing anyones ass. That's respectable.
Ahhh cant yuo have GEars of war on your system and you dont like it, there there at least you have Resistance !!
"Unlike Cliffy B who talks trash about Gears being impossible on the PS3"
No he didn't. Provide the link! Stop reading cr@p written by fanboys online and mistaking them for facts!!!
Cliff has NEVER said anything like that about Gears of War on the PS3. If he had, it would have CERTAINLY been reported here on QJ, and the thread would have been MASSIVE with fanboys on both sides argueing.
So where is it? It's nowhere to be found, not on QJ or any gaming website.
So please, check your facts before making such claims.
Epic's claim on a Core Duo system is that if you make a game for one specific type of PC (Core 2 Duo with an 11tybillion GTX card), it won't work as well or at all with different configured PCs (AMD AM2, Pentium 4 EE, etc).
I am glad to know that a company is taking a stand on the lowest common denominator and making sure that their product is truly optimized for each console.
And for the naysayers, Gears can be worked to run on the PS3 and look just as good on the system as it does on the 360. To say it doesn't just proves how much you don't know about programming and what the systems are capable of.
Lastly, there will probably be a GOW mod for PC; and if the PS3 homebrew/mod crew pick up as well as some would like it to, you might even see a GOW mod or two for the PS3.
