Manufacturing Complexity Could Produce Early PS3 Shortage

pj nealyWhen  Master gamemaker Kojima called the PS3 as the future of gaming he was, of course, referring to its technical power. But the price for having all that muscle could result in production shortage, at least in the early stages says Analyst P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research.

“We've learned the Sony Playstation 3 is not just a game console. It’s a movie platform. It’s also a super-computer. This is now the most complex box that’s ever been built in this industry. It’s going to have a Cell processor, it’s going to have a Blu-ray drive. The number of pieces that are going into this box are even more astounding [than the over 1700 parts used in the Xbox 360]" McNealy says.

The complex manufacturing process required in putting the PS3 together could be a problem. Citing the Xbox 360's manufacturing-related shortage, McNealy thinks Sony will also be limited in term of production.

Sony is confident it will meet its PS3 shipment target of 1 million units per month (6 million units shipped by the end of March 2007) and says it will have two million units ready for its global launch in November. McNealy is not. “Sony, we don’t think, is going to be in assembly for another four to six weeks--end of July, early August." McNealy expects PS3 production to hit its stride sometime in 2007 when "the wild-card becomes, [whether or not] people still want to spend six-hundred bucks on the box."

sony is a manufactoring giant afterall. even if you hate them, you have to realize they can produce things in-house at an extrodinbary speed. sony seems confident about the success of the ps3, so they will not wait around to make more. they will begin making them and not stop for 10 years.

ps4 to be released in 6 years. w00tcakes.

so they still have overheating problems on the PS3's CELL... and all this ***** isnt fitting into the already presented empty PS3-case... we all have seen on so many photos.

they need to make a bigger one because the CELL produces too much heat on 90nm to clock it @ 3,2ghz

2,8ghz is a more realistic goal for 90nm

OR producing it with a bigger heatsink (new case)

OR producing it in 65nm... but this would need far too long time... they dont want the Wii to come out first!

happy waiting for a castrated/too big/too late PS3!

Hiding all the crap that doesn't matter, yeah!!! lol. Everyone has their opinion and view on what will happen in the future reguarding consoles but it's all crap untill it actually happens. Hey look at how much MS boasted they'd sell in 6 months... lol they didn't even get close.

» A shortage?! F***ing DUH!!

Seriously, who didn't see this coming?

Of course there's gonna be a shortage! 2(?) million systems, divided by three regions (US, Europe, and Japan) equals a shortage. Microsoft wrote and perfected that equasion a year ago. (Now, if the PS3s overheat, have few good launch titles, and fails in Japan, then we'll have perfect deja vu.)

Sony is arrogant thinking "Wow, that didn't work so well for MS... We'll do it, too, but better (maybe)!"

If history repeats itself, and Sony doesn't have a good plan, we'd better be saving up our rent money, open Ebay accounts, and bend over for a Blu-Raping.

» just sony's way of one uping

remember when black didnt sell? when dvd's were thought of as unneeded by game consoles, how bout all the weird nonconventional games that we all love? these are all one up'd by sony, they made black sell, opened the doorway to dvd storage for gaming (granted dvd's laser's arent made for constant use and die quickly). And all those weird games? Well between sony and nintendo they brought out a good couple handfuls to say the least. So even though this doesnt seem like the artificial shortages that microsoft made (look back to its launch and youll see it all over in ms's plans) it still looks like that 2 mil world wide isnt going to cut it for launch. Now to my point sony is going to one up microsoft by showing dual console sales setup can and will work when done correctly. By using the currently and subjectively UNNEEDED accesories like card readers, hdmi, wifi out. KEEPING the harddive as standard is prime mind you, ms showed that with the xbox. but yes by taking out the extra subjectivly unneeded items and shaving a 100 off they could make it work nicely. Thats because NEITHER SYSTEM IS CRIPPLED. they both display the same 1080p resolution, same games, both have harddrives and can go online. Thats that.

» HMDI unneeded?

#14 LOL i guess you dont have a HDTV. The HDMI is pretty important to me. You will get the best sound and picture only with the PS3. Since when can componet cables do that for u?

not to burst a bubble but with the 2 sony hdtvs i have in my house that both have hdmi hookups to them i dont notice any quality improvement over component at 1080i/p and as far as the sound goes i dont notice the sound unless i use the optical with a surround system wich ofcourse has nothing to do with hdmi.

by LOLZ - 2006-07-01 15:23
» More bad PR?!

Well there is one thing for certain.

PS3 will NOT bomb in Japan.

Thats like saying McDonalds and Burger King will go out of business tomorrow.

Not likely,

» 15,

exactly, it is subjectivly unneeded, if you dont care bout the top notch audio and video, and/or not have a hdtv nor plan on getting one, you dont need it. and i agree with 16, sound qualitly only really improves through optical at the moment.

by Errr... - 2006-07-02 02:53
» HDMI is digital

Sound will be on the same quality through hdmi as it is through optical, being they're both DIGITAL.

That means there is no change from the system to your tv/ sound system

I'm %100 sure PS3 will be sold out. Just say your not gonna buy the system but others will especially in Japan.
