Mandatory PS3 Trophy implementation not absolute, patches not retroactive

PS3 Trophies to be mandatory from January 2009 - Image 1One of the biggest news that hit yesterday was that SCEE announced a new rule - all PS3 games to be released starting next year will have to have Trophy support.

Today, we got some additional details and some minor clarifications about this new mandatory rule for developers and publishers.

First up, the cut-off date is January 1, 2009. Big bang for a new year eh? All games released from Jan. 1 and onwards should be having Trophy support already included as part of on-disc content. However, for all previous games which have already been released before the said date... it's still up to the developer if they want to throw it in or not.

More so, on the subject of adding Trophy support for older games, according to a UK development source of VG247, retroactive Trophies just aren't possible. Meaning, just like how in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, when the Trophy patch came out, you had to start the game all over again to rack up on the achievements. Explains VG247's source:

Also, as far as I am aware, any games that do patch in Trophies have to be started from scratch. We canÂ’t check a save game for stats and unlock Trophies accordingly.

While most will say that the mandatory Trophy rule is 1) inevitable, and 2) a godsend, let's hope that other PS3 features incorporated through the recent firmware updates also become mandatory implementation in the future (yes, I'm looking at you, in-game screenshot feature!).

Just to give you guys a timeline, the Trophy system was first incorporated with FW 2.40 back in early July. It took about half a year for Sony to make this feature a mandatory procedure. When will the other features become mandatory for all games?

Why do people care about achievements, trophies, etc?

It's not like you're being productive playing videogames all day.

» .....

Because soon they will start to give away items with trophies, like furniture or clothing in Home.

» and...

when will that be? lol. cause in 360's achievements, you can unlock stuff from the game, or download em if you've got enough points.

as for the sp3 now, it's just for display. don't get me wrong, i HAD a 360, and i'm loving my ps3 right now. but saying that trophies are mandatory when for the past 2 years you can't do anything with your trophies, what's the use?

If that's the case then how come i was instantly given over 10 trophies as soon as i installed the Bad Company patch? This guy is an idiot.

Single player trophies were not retroactive, you recieved trophies for your online efforts wich are linked to your PSN acount.

Does anybody care what you say? No. So why bother wasting your time on writing this Mister Common Sense-less?

» ABOUT BLOODY TIME

I'm still waiting for the Fallout 3 patch so I can play it.

I'm also waiting for the Saints Row 2 patch too.

Trophies/Achievements give games replay value. Without them there really is no reason to reply any game unless its that good. In the last 2 years only 2 games were that good they didnt need achievements. 2 out of about 200.

I get peeved off when I'm 80% through a game and a trophy patch comes out. (GTA IV, Uncharted) so this time I'll wait.

» good

Always knew this was gonna happen. Of course it was expected that they'd not force developers to release trophy patches for all the already released games. That would be a big slap in the dev's faces for sure.

I really hope they patch TFU it's my favorite game :(

» True...

But the "source" didn't differentiate between single + multiplayer, i wouldn't have said anything if they had. I don't care if trophies seem pointless to some players, its good to show off your petty amount to friends, well for me anyway :-D
