SNK isn't your everyday game company

SNK is way too specialized to be considered as mainstream indicator. Both their software and hardware only appeal to a minor audience. NeoGeo was just their home platform for 2D arcade conversions, 70% of the catalogue consists of fighting games. They are just mad at Sony (and Microsoft) for their mandatory HD in games. This prevents SNK from continuing their current style of 2D games, which are close to impossible to make in HD quality (insane workload for artists and amounts of data). So they will stick to PS2 format anyway, maybe they should consider XBox Live Arcade (and Sony probably ain't that harsh on HD on their counterpiece).

They don't need new hardware

All they do these days is rehashing KOF and Metal Slug, they don't want to spend money on PS3 and X360 development. Why didn't no one pass that as negative XBox 360 info when they knew that SNK doesn't make games on it, but now it is being passed as negative info cause PS3 is involved? Poor fanboyish sites try to distract people from buying PS3 LOL.

I mean, for the time 599$ for a game console was IMPOSSIBLE, and the console only had some good graphics for the time, but the ps3 can play your DVD, ps2, ps1 ps3 games, blue-ray movies and games, run linux as a computer, plug a keyboard &mouse and run games online for free.... and it's priced only 100$ more than an xbox 360 lol. Only the blue-ray player is worth 1000$ so for 100$ it's a steal =D think about it, you know the game my singstar? it will be on shelves a bit after launch, and they said they were happy with the blue-ray because on a dvd they could put about 20-30 songs and now they will release my singstar on ps3 with more than 300 songs and even more in downloadable content, lol. if it was only graphics I'd say the ps3 would be down, but not with all it can do, not like the x360 who's just a graphic upgrade for 399$ :S

Totally agree, $600 back then was like $1000 now and considering for your money you got nothing but an arcade machine with mad expensive games of course it failed. The PS3 is cheap by neogeo standards and packs more features. Also the neogeo was arcade only, SNK games, who plays them cummon be honest. No way you can compare the two, the neogeo was doomed to fail because of price and lack of decent titles.

back when the Neo Geo released, the video game industry was a very *VERY* different place. the market was primarily 8 to 17 year olds, most of them relying on their parents to purchase a gaming console. back then, even $200 was considered "expensive" by parents. nowadays, that 8 to 17 year old that loved video games is 18 to 27, and they still have that love of video games. they purchase their own hardware, for the most part, and get software all year round when it's available, and may occassionally get a game or two as a gift from a family member, friend, parent, girlfriend, boyfriend, fiance, wife, or husband. also, the NES and SNES only sold about 60 million units each. by the end of the Playstation's life cycle, the console had sold 100 million units. Sony grew the market by 40 million people. the PS1's younger brother, the Playstation 2 sold over 100 million units in *HALF* the time of it's older brother. back in 1985 to 1995, gaming was *NOT* the dominate form of entertainment that it is today. nowadays, children, adults, celebrities of all sorts, and probably even some closet politicians are enjoying a video game console of some sort. the market is now large enough to support a $500/$600 console, whereas back then it wasn't. i should know, because the doe-eyed 6 year old playing Super Mario Bros back in 1985 is 27 years old now, and eagerly awaiting the release of the PS3, regardless of the $500/$600 price tag. i can afford it, and it has the games i want to play, so why shouldn't i save up and get it? it's more than a deal looking at *everything* the system can do (someone kindly listed it above, so i won't).

They are really getting left behind the times. Their inability to adapt to new generations will leave them out of future generations. Back then everyone moved to 3D while they stuck to their guns with 2d and boy did they lose popularity. Although they make great games, I see this decision once again sinking the SNK label even further. I wouldn't be surprise if they go bankrupt in the next 5 years. What I would advise them is to focus on downloadable market games like live arcade. The quality of games is going high and people will stop paying 50-60$ for rehashes of old arcade favorites. Instead they should focus on digital distribution as a way to continue to grow their business model and fanbase. Companies that fail to adapt to the market (Nintendo with CDs, Sony with MP3s) get left behind very quickly in that market. Learn from your mistakes SNK and adapt to the Next Generation.

The believe an article about this was already posted. I'll post my opinion anyways. SNK are known for the 2d fighters and other 2d type arcade games. Why would any 2d game company need a high new technology system to make 2d games for? They don't. So since, the PS3 will have backwards compadibility, you can play those new PS2 2d games on your PS3 for the same old PS2 price. Sounds fair to me. This is not bad news or a strong indication that all companies will suddenly stop making games for the PS3. Its simply a specialized company, for the time, deciding they do not need all that raw power and resources to make their games. Simple as that. Also, as mentioned before, why wasn't this pinned as bad news for the 360? I hate to say it, because I grew to love this site, but you guys are starting to become extremely biased in your articles. I mean, each time I check the site, I'm lucky to see 1 out of 5 articles that aren't bad news/misinformed so they seem like bad news/ overexaggerations/cynical skeptisism/rumors. Really guys, whats come over you people. FUD.

NEO GEO AND PS3

Today more people will buy a PS3 than a Neo Geo long ago do to the fact that Playstation is more well known and that today you have more game fans than ever before. I don't buy that they won't have enough PS3s for 3 or 4 years either. I think the first year will be kinda tight on supply but after that they should have ample supply. Also if SNK developed better new generation games then they would sell. I for one enjoy lots of their old games but alot of the new generation of gamers may not do to the fact that 2D looks old school. Their new King of Fighters Maximum Impact was ok but they need to up these kinds of games a bit to compete.

The Neo-Geo was expensive back then but the thing that killed that machine was the $200(and higher) cartridges that the games were on. No moron would even consider grabbing a high priced system with games that are $200+ per game. Also, I'm not sure SNK is in a posistion to voice thier opinion of the PS3, for they have opted to pass it by all together. Thats like a PC developer shootin their face off about a mac.

Linux is sweet not just because it's linux, but because many applications are already written for it. You have web browsers, IM client, Word processors, games, media players, emulators, all for free. Not to mention the homebrew applications that will take advantage of the PS3 hardware features (memory sticks, Blu-Ray, RSX, etc) What can ppl exactly do with the linux on PS2? Well just about anything the PS2 can physically handle. They even use them at universities for game development learning: http://playstation2-linux.com/education/ Sony did block access to the DVD drive due to piracy. See sony doens't mind homebrew (many apps are up and running on it) is when people start stealing intellectual property and then start acting like idiots saying things like "I wasn't going to buy that anyway so it's not stealing", that Sony tries to pull the plug. I see no reason why the PS3 will not follow a similar model. (Note a modchips can be used to allow access to the DVD drive from the PS2-linux)

PS3 != NeoGeo

one reason: NeoGeo threw itself into market with expensive hardware without a good game hardware reputation to back it up. Thus, no one bought it because it was a blatant risk. The Playstation brand has an overall positive 10 year reputation under its belt; that's the difference. That last line from NeoGeo: "We didn't expect to sell a lot of home systems. A few crazy people bought them." That's total bulls***. What kind of special-ed business class did this jerk take? You don't make a godd@mn console and think people who buy your self-proclaimed POS are crazy! With a stupid attitude like that, no wonder why the NeoGeo sunk. McDonalds Hula-burger? PS3 is a computer, same as XBox 360, PlayStation 2 and XBox :|. You meant PC, and in this case Linux PC, now I ask you: how exactly will PS3 be limited in this manner? It's an open platform, so pretty much every kind of Linux can be installed and run on it, even windows can run on it as long as someone writes the drivers for PS3. It also has keyboard and mouse support. So actually it can be used as a PC, and will be able to use all Linux programs and if done right Windows programs as well.

ps2 release

the craze in this release is really not too different from the craze in the ps2 release.. its just that games have become much more widespread and have targeted so many more groups of people that it is more publicized and analyzed by more people.. also lets not forget that the 360 didnt sell very well outside the US and playstation is being sold worldwide.. its numbers will probably be large in japan and the UK despite how many people floating between what console to buy in the US decide to go with the 360.
