Low-priced first-party games for the PS3 are here to stay

PS3Sony may have been marred by bad publicity, but come to think of it, bad publicity is still publicity and free face time is always good, we suppose. So let's stop the sulking and focus on that bright side of the bargain.

The Japanese PS3 that will be released tomorrow has surprisingly low software prices. Launch titles such as Resistance: Fall of Man and Genji: Days of the Blade will be carrying a price tag of 5,980 Japanese Yen (roughly US$51).

Some may be wondering if this is some PR stunt for the launch, but according to Sony Computer Entertainment promotional chief Megumi Hosoya, this kind of pricing is here to stay and is not some show.

The SCE bigwig said that "depending on the type of software and the publisher, pricing will be different, but for SCE, we hope to price PS3 software in the same 4,800 to 6,800 yen (US$41-$58) range as the PS2. With pricing for SCE's first wave of titles set at 5,980 yen, it's okay to think that future SCE titles will be centered in this pricing range."

As for other titles, Japan's retail community seems to prove Hosoya's statements. MotorStorm and F1 World Championship will both be priced at 5,980 Japanese Yen.
