I'm not sure how many of you guys intensively use Life with PlayStation for whatever purposes other than Folding, but for those that do... there's a new update available for the service.

Changes for v1.1 include a new Expert Mode added for Folding@Home - having an expert mode sounds as if it's been turned into an actual game that can cause blistered thumbs, but no, that's not it. What Expert Mode does is disable all other channels and allow F@H to use the full bandwidth of your PS3 unit. Plus, we also get a new channel, one which aims to inject a bit more culture into our lives.

Life with PlayStation Update 1.1 Changes:
  • Added support for adding and removing channels dynamically
  • Added a local time display in the LIVE CHANNEL.
  • Updated Mood categories for automatic music selection.
  • Added support to enable Folding@home Expert Mode which disables all other channels and features that may impact simulation performance.
    • Folding@home Expert Mode can be activated by navigating to: Options Menu > [Configuration] > [Folding@home].
    • Expert Mode - Folding@home™ is the only channel enabled. All application processing power is used exclusively for Folding@home™ and no other channels can be browsed.
    • Note: While in this mode, channel updates are also disabled.
  • New Channel - United Village - United Village is a project designed to provide an experience of sharing a sense of community and culture from locations around the world. With each update, we will feature a visual series of moments and aspects of life from various locations.

Awesome, all I want is F@H anyway.

» Can you still see the protein?

When F@H first came to the ps3 you could navigate around the protein molecule you were folding. I was showing off the ps3 to someone and wanted to do that but I couldn't find it anywhere, did they take it out when they merged the two services?

» it's still there

I've used it somewhat recently... although i couldn't figure out how to change the look of the protein as it was being folded.

» 1 question

does it let me change the floking temperature unit to celsius

like its just stupid im pretty sure more than half the world uses celsius why not use that?

or better yet display each country differently, like canada as celsius and the US as Fahrenheit

Yeah, I hate the new service. Pain in the butt to get around. But you can view the model and move it around. I just messed around with it until I got it to where I wanted it.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

You can read up on it here:

http://folding.stanford.edu/

Basically, Stanford University is doing research on various diseases. They believe improper protein folding is the root cause of certain diseases such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease and other cancers.

But, they have WAY TOO MUCH work to do. So instead of buying millions of computers themselves, they create a program that millions of USERS LIKE US can use to help with their research.

When you aren't using your playstation, you can allow F@H to run and this performs work for Stanford University.

» yup...

Just a good thing to do...while it does this you can also go to a globe and move around the world and check out temperature, news and webcams from different cities...

I check out the news once in awhile, or will leave it on overnight when I need to charge my controllers anyways....I def don't run it all the time.

It should be titled "Life With PlayStation 1.1 update brings crashing and freezing" I had to actually delete the whole LWP app and reinstall it first cause every-time I tried to update my PS3 froze. Now all my points are gone :(
