Lazard on Sony: Implement price cuts and offer better lineup for PS3

Sony should implement price cut to PS3 - Image 1Wedbush Morgan Securities noted that Sony could win this round of the console war if the PlayStation 3 (PS3) will be marketed to home entertainment enthusiasts because of its support for the Blu-Ray format. Lazard Capital Markets, likewise, is offering another solution to Sony on how it can sway consumers to its side.

The proposed solution is rather basic and doesn't need an in-depth explanation: implement a price cut and offer a better software lineup to boost sales. Speaking for the company, Colin Sebastian added that given today's lineup, they are forecasting that Sony will enjoy a 15% sales increase at the minimum this year alone. He noted,

We believe videogame sales remain generally healthy year-to-date despite tougher year-over-year comps for the remainder of 2007. We continue to expect solid 15 per cent plus growth in software sales in North America this year. We continue to believe that a significant pre-holiday ramp in PS3 unit sales is unlikely without a more robust title line-up and/or a hardware price cut.

It was just the other day when we learned that it is highly feasible for Sony to lower the price of the console because the coveted Blu-Ray diodes are currently getting cheaper and being produced in increasing quantity. The only question now is will Sony eventually give in.

» Price Cut Soon?

I don't think Sony will cut the price of the PS3 soon. Why should they when it hasn't been out that long and we know that when more games are released they will sell more PS3s. I think they will wait a bit longer. Maybe after next Christmas but who knows, they may want to get the upper hand by then and lower it for the holiday season. That would be a smart move.

A price cut and more games will sell more PS3s??? GASP!

Like Chuck said above, Sony probably won't do a price cut because they're losing hundreds of dollars for each unit sold.

As far as a good game lineup, this Summer is looking pretty promising, and Fall should rock.

All the people trying to give SONY pointers about how turn things around make me laugh, they really do. SONY might have counted on more units sold overall but they know what they are doing and they have smart people that can think beyond the next 6 months. The PS2 took about a year or two to get things rolling and history is going to repeat itself again here.

I am not a seer, but I am pretty sure that come 12-24 months the situation will look very different with who is ahead of who. SONY thinks in 10 year cycles (more realistically 7-8 years) for their consoles. My prediction is M$ will start to feel the pressure 2-3 years from now and will panic and try once again to squeeze out their next turd leaving the previous dead in the water after another pathetic 4 year cycle. But hopefully this time both developers and gamers will wise up and not put up with it a second time. Either that or I am going to recruit radicals and go jihad on M$ asses, you all can join me.
