Lair

A few days ago, we showed you the TGS trailer for Factor 5's upcoming game for the PS3, Lair. Although we still don't know the nitty-gritty specifics of this game, you can be sure to expect flying dragons and loads of ground battles. Reports say that it's going to be on 1080p as well, and will make full use of the the PS3's motion-sensitive controller.

But you can be sure that this will be one cool game. After all, this is made by the guys who brought us Star Wars: Rebel Strike, Star Wars: Rogue Leader, and Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo. The screenshots we've also posted pretty much speak for themselves, don't you think?

Interestingly, the "flying combat" video that we have here is reminiscent of the TGS trailer we've posted earlier. So while you're at it, maybe you can do a little "spot the difference" game as well.

Hmmm, may I rant a little? Please?

Like many others, I've been waiting for a long time to see actual gameplay from Lair and I finally got to see it in an interview with the developers over at Gamespot. My impressions? It's just Warhawk with Dragons!!! It's nothing special imo, nothing to make gamers say "WOW!" or "OMG!", nothing to make anyone rush out to buy a PS3. The graphics are good, but nothing exceptional compared to other next-gen games. Overall, I do feel rather disappointed, just as I have been with the PS3 in general at TGS this year. Even MGS4's gameplay footage was a bit of an anti-climax after seeing the previous trailers (next-gen graphics, last-gen animation). And let's be honest now, Snake is not exactly difficult to see when his camouflage barely matches his surrounding and his body casts such obvious shadows. I would have preferred some kind of transparency effect on his suit, so that he constantly blends in with the background (maybe that's just me). One another issue, I wish Sony would make their conferences more exciting, and especially find someone else to present them because Phil Harrison is just sooooo boring (with his monotone voice and a facial expression that never changes). He looks and sounds like someone who doesn't care anymore (even though I know he does). I expected more from Sony at TGS after a rather ordinary showing at E3. Hey, and where Killzone? :( Ok, I know I'm whinging and whining, but I'm still getting my PS3 next year. I just don't have the same excitement I had over the PS3 as I had before (as if anyone here cares what I think ;)).

I thought TGS was supposed to blow me away after the poor e3 showing.....now it just seems like a e3 showing with a different name.

Yeah, I have to say I agree 100%. Although I haven't seen it yet, I've heard that Sony's keynote presentation is even worse than their E3 conference (so perhaps I'll wait awhile before I subject myself to looking at it). I think Sony's main problem is that they over promised what the PS3 could deliver (to put gamers off the 360, the same tactic they used against the Dreamcast) by saying the PS3 was the only 'real' next-gen console, i.e. the "next-gen starts when we say so" and look, here's a video of Killzone to prove it!!! So gamer's expectations have been WAY too high. Even a few days ago I read one gamer here on QJ claiming the PS3 was 2.5 to 3 times more powerful than the 360 (the poor deluded fool ;)). The PS3 is a GREAT new console and I can't wait but geez, Sony seems determined to push gamer's faith to the limits. Sony's TGS was such a disappointment, and yet TGS is the end of a long line of "just wait until" promises from gamers this year. Those who've been on forums like this all year will know what I mean, i.e. at the end of last year it was "wait until CE5", then after CES in January it was "ok, well wait until the Sony event in March, then we'll see", then it was "wait until E3, because Sony always saves their best for E3", then it was "Sony never shows their hand at E3, wait until TGS in Japan, because that's more important to Sony than E3". So, what I'm I suppose to be waiting for now guys? :( Come on Sony, IMPRESS ME.....Please! (See, I can rant too :)).

#4 U have to play it...

Dude your so wrong, I was at TGS all 3 days and this game is amazing...flying feels so natural and it's so much fun. The Air battles are awesome and the Ground battles are great although a little unfinished. Flaming dudes is great fun! Over all this game is sweet and just looks amazing...I guess you just have to be there. Oh well...

"Amazing" is not the feedback I'm getting from numerous websites. That's not to say the feedback is bad, it's actually been rather good for Lair (but perhaps that's in comparison with everything else?). They say it's good, it's fun, but it's not mindblowing. It's really what you would expect from Factor 5 given their Rogue Squadron series. Great graphics, similar gameplay style to Rogue Squadron (which they're good at) and hence it really remind me of Warhawk with Dragons, or even Rogue Squadron with Dragons. I just don't see anyone picking up Lair and saying to themselves "Wow, I MUST buy a PS3 to play this game", and that applies to other games too (including MGS4). I've seen nothing at TGS to justify the purchase of a PS3, so instead, gamers like myself are really going on faith, i.e. after buying a Playstation and PS2, we're buying a PS3 on the promise of the fantastic games we'll see in future, which is fine, but it would have been great to see some of those games before the console launched. I expected more from Sony at TGS. Sorry. :( #5 & #8. Agreed.

Impressed

I said it before and ill say it again. I was impressed and felt like I got what I needed from the TGS2006. Vecha mentioned in a different post that the TGS made him change his mind of the PS3, so I assume you were slightly impressed. Otherwise you wouldnt hang around here everyday posting in the forums and providing news sources (unless you get paid by MS=)). What I wanted also was to get to test the Wii and its hyped up games, but only Elebits was there from the really interresting ones, otherwise TGS was clearly a victory for Sony, Sony, Sony and SquareEnix. Microsft mainly handed out bags for free ads and waited for their own event.
