And so says the King of all Cosmos...Here we go again, with Mister Ken Kutaragi making announcements.

Well, in any case, this time around, the former Sony head honcho has bravely gone on record in an interview with the Japanese site, Impress, stating that he "promises" a device which he refers to as an "AV-centric PS3".

Basically, it will be another Sony gadget which will be built around the Cell processor, except that most - if not all - of its functions will be dedicated solely to audio and video capabilities. To quote from the man himself, he says that the upcoming Sony thingamajig would be "a standard AV component sized box with a more powerful, power supply unit, anti-shake insulator, twice the main memory, and 2x HDMI to split sound and video output".

Oh, and yeah, Kutaragi says that the thing would also certainly be expensive, saying that it would most probably be at around the same price as other high-end electronic devices such as TVs and Blu-ray recorders (notice a pattern here?). Impress speculates that the device that Kutaragi is cooking up may be in the ¥ 300,000 range, or about US$ 2,500.

And so Sony goes on to make the world's most expensive DVD player. Ouch.

LOL

Ohhhhh Sony your so funny. Give it up to Sony everyone. Here is a company that is trying hard to flush themselves down with the 3DO lets hear it for em. Seriously, this is a dumb idea.

how about

a "gaming centric" PS3. That might be a good idea. And seriously, ditch blu-ray before it's too late. Re release the old games on DVD's and save the PS3.

eerrr

isn't it called a "reciever"? Actually if you put A/V in front of it, you'd get Audio/Video reviever! And he's probably talking about using the cell to process all the data, as well as HDMI 1.3 to go along with that PS3. And 2500 for a reciever with 1.3 and most likely upgradeable firmware with a slight chance of true dolbyHD isn't bad at all. I guess we can wait till CES next year to find out...

not surprising. I knew this was coming along for months now. sony did this with the ps2 in the form of the PSX in japan. I'm highly doubtful that we'll ever see the ps3s PSX version outside japan though, but who knows.

yeah

i wanted a PSX so abdly but i could never get my hands on one. The PSX looked sexy, had great functionality and features, and did i mention it looked sexy?

Hmm...

Definitately interesting... I mean assuming that it would still play PS3 games and install linux, with the use of the RSX(or at least a driver to use a couple SPU's as shader pipelines) or else it won't be seriously viable computer solution with all of the graphical demand almost any computer would be used for. But if it was a PS3 with 3.5" hdd an extra hdmi and different firmware/OS and better PSU, in a logically big square box that mose recievers are cased in; I don't see why it would be more than $1200-$1500. I mean the point of creating a single embedded style processor that could handle many different tasks is to make production costs go down.

hmmmmmm

maybe theyre making the ps3 smaller and adding a better motion sensor controller to it. there gonna stop supporting the ps3 and make sony fans buy the same machine but with motion sensor remotes....

PS3 is the 3DO 2 and will be just as much a failure

Ken Kutaragi absolutely killed any desire I had of ever buying a PS3. They could have had an easy sale as I loved my PS2 and even the PSP (thanks to homebrew.) Next he's going to say this piece of s*it is too cheap. Why don't you raise the price to $5000 Kentaro? $ony just doesn't care about the average consumer anymore and would rather build overpriced crap for the rich.

.

If it's so sexy why don't you have sex with it? From what I hear it was nearly a failure in Japan.
