Ken Kutaragi in an interview with Japanese site PC Impress Watch hints at the possibility of the PS3 having an external power supply like the Xbox 360's power brick. Here he talks about how the cost of mass producing Sony's next-gen consoles can be lowered. One factor they're working on is the reduction in size of the Cell chip by adopting a 65-nanometer processor. To keep power consumption as low as possible, the Cell processor will have to use Tranmeta's LongRun power-management technology.
Kutaragi also talked about ways to cool the Cell processor which include heat and electromagnetic interference management using heat pipes and custom cooling solutions. We would have expected the most typical liquid cooling system to be placed inside of the PS3, but Kutaragi offers a more interesting solution - he said that "the power supply could almost be sold separately."
Is this his hint at the PS3's own version of the power brick?

Kind of funny 2/3 comments are on the box.

who cares if the PSU is outside the PS3.. chances are it'll be half the size of the 360's.. why? coz Sony know how to design things properly
Did i mention thats a sexy box?

The only thing he said was that they invested a lot of time and effort in the PSU, so they could sell it on the PC Market just because it is very efficient. And that indicates an integrated device much more than an external device. With the latter, you only pretty much need to make sure it doesn't incinerate and gives you enough power.

That's what I think he means, anyway. Not that it will go outside.

"Is that the official box, with everything that comes with it, except a diff controller."
Im sorry but Nintendo had the first external power supply I think with their Gamecube, then Sony with the PS2 Slim, and "Last" is microsoft Xbox360.

The exact quote is: "We definitely aren't using any proprietary methods... We certainly couldn't fit a liquid cooling system [inside the PS3]... We're spending a lot ON heat and electromagnetic interference [management]. The power supply could almost be sold separately."
Which means that they are spending so much money on this technology that it could be sold separately (because it costs alot of money). The last sentence is a joke on his side.
You must be hating this site, if you post crap like this.

As for the box, it's a Photoshopped image, but man it's nice. I imagine that the Black PS3 (the one i'm trying to get), would be on a silver box. I really hope that Sony does a design like this for the real PS3 box, as it's really well designed. Kudos to whoever put that mock-up together.

I wouldnt consider the N64 power supply to be external because it was attached to the system and couldnt be moved to a different location from the system.

it's about time you guys (qj) introduced some quality controls into your system for posting news, as right now it seems like you'll just let anything get through.
that article about what's under the flap part... for god's sake. in the wii site you had some rubbish about a guy who doesn't understand the sensor bar... can't you simply reply to the poster of this news and say 'don't be an idiot'.
it's starting to get a little tedious having to read the sensational headlines.
'ps3 is crap, it's official - today some loser said ps3 was crap, sony denied it'. there's another qj story for you. ffs

the what's under the flap article was pretty friggin ridiculous. i'd much prefer the editorial/opinion pieces, than that antiquated news.
it'll be interesting once Sony actually starts marketing the console and Blu Ray, and a lot of heads will be turned then. people ***** and moan (mainly PS3 detractors) that no one knows what Blu Ray is, but they haven't even started their marketing push for it yet! if we didn't go on the internet everyday, and got our information from places like ign or qj.net, we wouldn't know what Blu Ray is either. once advertisements start showing up on TV, the radio, billboards and bus stops, the term Blu Ray will be permeating the culture, and becoming a common knowledge word. Sony has proven that they're a master of hype, and the hype for Blu Ray and the PS3 hasn't even *begun* yet (when looking at it through the mainstreamer's eyes)
