Konami says PS2-to-Blu-ray releases an "exciting opportunity"; Capcom taking "temperature readings"

Blu-ray - Image 1

So the news is out. Sony will be releasing a special Blu-ray edition of God of War 1 and #@%!5
6#@%!. Now that the gates have been pushed open by that berserk albino Kratos, will we be seeing more PS2 games released on Blu-ray in the future?

Nothing is definite yet, but it seems that publishers are starting to think about getting on the PS2-to-Blu-ray wagon. Gaming website Kotaku recently talked to a Konami rep about it, and while the rep didn't confirm anything, he did have some encouraging words:

We are constantly exploring unique ways to expose players to some of our legacy titles such as Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill. Re-releasing games on Blu-ray presents an exciting opportunity for a publisher, however we have no announcements at this time.

Definitely exciting, I'd say. It's a chance to further capitalize on old games that already have sizable fanbases. Slap a few coats of polish onto it and make it playable on a high-def machine and you've got yourself a rather easy way to make money.

Capcom is also starting to do some "temperature readings" on what gamers would possibly like to see if they ever -- not saying that they will, just "if" -- do rerelease some of their PS2 titles. Capcom's Christian Svensson had this to say on the company's forums:

I don't want anyone reading this the wrong way (as I'm not saying anything like this could happen) but I'm seeing some interested for DMC to get this treatment. Are there other titles you'd like see go this way? I'm looking for some temperature readings.

The one who started the whole thing rolling, Sony, has so far declined to make any announcements yet about possible follow-ups. "We're always looking at new ways of getting content on PS3", Sony's Patrick Seybold told Kotaku, "but as of now, [God of War] is the only one planned."

Square Enix has also chosen not to comment about it at this time, although I personally think that they're sitting on a freakin' goldmine that would be perfect for this kind of compiled release. They're no strangers to rereleasing their older games, too, so it would not surprise me in the least if they do choose to take part in this somewhere down the road.

What about you guys? What franchises would you like to see go the way of God of War 1 and #@%!5
6#@%!? Sound off in the comments section. I'm going for Syphon Filter. And Breath of Fire.

hmmm no backward compatibility then this.... seems a bit sneeky.

waiting to see if people clock it imo.

Still if they are going to give them trophies and better resolutions and what not, then it might be good anyway.

» Well....

Maybe if dev's start going this way and it works, Sony will open their eyes and get to work on BC emulation for PS2 games eh?

I personally would love BR discs with entire series on them

» nah...

If this works, you can completely forget about BC on the PS3(not that it was coming anyway), it will all be about the blu rays and maybe downloads.

» f***k

and thats why sony removed PS2 backward , plus of that we will never see it again , so the only solution for this is PS2 hack , yes a ps2 hack will make sony respect players .

but Publishers release BR ps2 collection istead of one game , like MGS 123 in one bleu ray thats worth it , but one game in one BR is ripping .

Have Sony Bend re-release SF1-3 on Blu-Ray, as well as Omega Strain. Would be even better if they brought back OS's online and added online to SF2 and 3.

Dragon Quest and Shadow of the Colossus! Those would keep me happy!Preferabl y the later!

» hmm...

Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 should be a given; it should be released in the same fashion as God of War 1 and 2. Though I believe that the only games they might release in Blu-ray are series that are to be continued on in PS3, like God of War series (or the Kingdom Hearts series, if they ever get around to it). So I doubt that they'll do an FFX Blu-ray, despite the fanbase.

» Breath Of Fire FTW

Breath of fire 1,2,3,4 and dragon quarter, sense 1 and 2 were snes, and 3 and 4 were psx and dragon quarter was ps2 it should all fit on one bluray it'd be sooooooo beautiful id cry to have them all in one disk, even though i own all the originals still would be nice to have all of them on one disk and even better on save file LOL

» argh

a perfect move for sony and game developers

- re-release successful ps2 games - re-releases will be guaranteed to sell well.

- milk out money from gamers for the same game again, with little effort required.

in the end, the customer is the one being screwed. especially if he owns the ps2 game already, and does not have backwards compatible ps3.

by LowsNameBrand - 2009-09-02 08:03
» not necessarily

some games are quite difficult to find these days and this can give some people a chance to get something they didnt have a chance to get the first time around could be used both ways though

Well this is exactly why Sony took out the BC.

Not specifically so 3rd party publishers could release on bluray, but because PS2's were still selling and so were the games. Then when they stopped selling, re-release them on PSN.

If they are going to start bringing series over from bluray and charging us $50 bux again they better be putting entire series on one bluray. ie. all the MGS games on one bluray, all the Silent Hill on one bluray, all the resident evils on one bluray, etc....

I am not going to buy one PS2 game on a bluray, that is forsure.

by Shatterdome - 2009-09-02 11:18
» yes....

Every different version of SF on a bluray would be amazing.

Won't happen though, they are making so much money just releasing them singly on PSN that it will never happen...

by Shatterdome - 2009-09-02 11:23
» ....

If you already have the game and a PS2 I am not sure why you would even think about buying it on PS3.

Anyone who actually cares about acheivments/trophies is dumb (maybe a few trophies, cause they give you items in home, but even then) also I have yet to see an Arcade/ps1/ps2 game that looks better because of 720p. If they don't change all the assets in the game to be HD all you are doing is making it easier to see all the flaws in the crappy looking old game by making it HD. Unless they crank up the anit-aliasing like they do in xbox 1 games on the 360.

So if you have a ps2 and the game already, i'd just stick to that...

Why would you be dumb if you want to collect trophies.

Some people collect baseball cards, my chemistry teacher collects periodic tables, and other people collect trophies. Nothing dumb about it.

by Stealth! - 2009-09-02 12:47
» yea

believe me when I say, i'm a huge KH fan at the age of 22(23 next month) and would love to see both of those on one disc with trophies. however, I'm not sure if they'll do that but hey, with Nomura running things with KH and him being a PS3 fanboy, who knows. It shouldn't take that long to add those on Blu-ray disc before the next KH game on PS3.

by Shatterdome - 2009-09-02 13:31
» haha...

Then you should find something better to collect....like baseball cards, or even periodic tables....those are at least real tangible objects.

by p0op - 2009-09-02 14:47

I collect things. I collect v-cards. I have to say, Shatterdome, one of the best ones I've collected so far that I hold dear to my heart is your moms.

some of you sound like real arses....

Who the F*** cares if they rerelease their best games again, nobody forces you to buy them. I for one thin this is a great idea. I've never played God of War 1 and 2, and now I can enjoy them both in 720p, 60 fps and with trophies.

Trophies are a good way to make new challenges and to extend the gameplay.

And the prices are not even bad. 40 bucks for both remastered masterpieces? People, this is a STEAL. Normally, every other company wants the full price for crappy ports from PSX to PSP or SNES to DS or something.

How much do you pay for that? 30 to 40 for ONE game that isn't even improved? That's what a call a ripoff.

And to the people complaining about Sony taking out the BC:

Your own fault for selling your PS2. You could have played both games for under 10 bucks if you look on Ebay or something like that. Why should they include BC again?

Just think of it from a business standpoint: Would you intregrate additional chips in your console that raises the production costs a lot just for one function that isn't even just that much? (statistics already showd that)

by Hidden Chamber - 2009-09-02 23:37
» well said,

shatterdome.. my thoughts exactly.. + id love to try out the sh series for$50.. only played 1 + origins.

"40 bucks for both remastered masterpieces? People, this is a STEAL."

well, we'll just have to see how that "remastering" turns out. i'm having my doubts. most likely same music and graphics, with higher resolution. maybe some extra ps3 features (hdd install?). i'd say - do not expect total remodelling, new music, re-rendered fmv etc. same old game that *maybe* will offer some extra ps3 specific features.

to me gow games are masterpieces in category of frustrating games. not my thing, i guess

by Navani - 2009-09-03 01:09
» It would be cool

If they did it how Nintendo does it with their DS (yes I know.. remarkably different, one's a handheld and touchscreen but still) .. Somehow, Nintendo convinces me to get some of the remakes of their old games because they update the graphics and add new incentives to play and unlockables and stuff.. I think this idea of PS2 Blu-Ray games will be worth it if they update the graphics (which I doubt :[ ) and bundle two or three games together, like a Metal Gear Solid pack which I would totally purchase.

by SolaceIX - 2009-09-03 03:04
» Monster Hunter

Given the success of the Monster Hunter series on PSP, I would love to see a BD of the original. Maybe Capcom could even release MH2 on BD. I think this is a great opportunity to not only re-release games that people loved, but also to release content never before seen. Putting a whole series on one BD also sounds convenient for the collection I seem to have going.

» Agreed with BC...

I agree with your statement about BC, seriously it is your own fault for not adobting the PS3 early, and really if you don't still have a PS2 (cause they seriously aren't worth much if you trade in) why not just buy a PS2 slim they're only 100 bucks, I regret I wasn't an early adopter of the 60 gig, but I got an 80 with the PS2 emulation so not as good but atleast I still had it cause it was a big deal to me, we all saw it coming you only have yourself to blame really.
