Hideo Kojima challenges the PS3 - Image 1This one is still about video game designer Hideo Kojima and the recently concluded GO3 Electronic Entertainment Expo and Conference (GO3). We've already reported what Kojima had to say on Metal Gear solid 4: Guns of the Patriots but he still had a lot to say about the PlayStation 3 (PS3) and its possible impact on our minds.

His speech was focused on "Evolution in Technology and Changes in Game Design", and according to him, modern video gaming has evolved so much that designers had to consider other elements like story, design, voice acting, sound effects, music, and online code. All of these plus realistic graphics, Kojima added, could greatly affect people on a psychological level.

As game hardware evolves and more technology appears, you will gradually start to collaborate with other industry professionals. Doctors, psychologists, many artists, plus maybe some scientists - we can perhaps collaborate with these people in the future.

Quite notably, Kojima mentioned that their team had exhausted the concept of the space so they are focusing on creating situations. He then discussed how this applied this to MGS4. In this reiteration of the series, Kojima explained that Snake has a lot of important choices to make,

This time it's a warzone, so you have country A or country B. Snake could interfere with either of the countries. It does not necessarily mean that everyone is an enemy to Snake. This creates a new tension in playing this new hide and seek.

Going back to psychological effects, he addressed Sony and said that its new entertainment system could be very instrumental in all these. He quipped, "I would like to challenge the PS3's CPU power for not only what you can see, but also psychological effects, or psychological battles, where it can affect your gameplay."

» Hideo Kojima and PS3

This mean he'll still work with the PS3 and his view points on it changed? It sounds like he sort likes the idea of the Cell's potential.

I gotta say he's one guy that when he talks you have to respect what he says. Statements like this from any other developer would be just hot air.

But you just know he can do exactly what he says.

» Kojima likes MGS4 running on PS3

Kotaku people interviewed him. More or less says that the game is going to be exclusive to PS3 becuase it's the ideal platform. But he does open up the idea of making games for the 360 too.

That's what I thought. I hate the internet sometimes because people take what someone says and change it around. IE: I've heard that Kojima dislikes working on the PS3 etc. Though, now I know he actually likes the PS3 lol

» ok

so that's it, xbox 360 may have a better graphics chip, but ps3 is still better when it comes to processors.

and Kojima always tells the truth, so we know ps3 will win this war!

Can you creeps stop yabbering on about console wars? christ...

To some extent older machines have been gripping on an emotional level... it has nothing to do with hardware...

before any of you start flaming me for "dissin' kojima" I'll say that I have more respect for the man than anyone else in the industry, but I also see how he is a master user of buzz words and he certainly knows how to oil the cogs of the hype machine...

As is briefly discussed in the light hearted gaming myths article ( http://www.qj.net/Memorable-Videogame-myths-from-reviving-Aeris-to-saving-Wander/pg/49/aid/85804 ), games have been driving emotive response since the days of chrono trigger... heck, before that even...

I know I don't stand alone when I confess to being totally gutted at the death of aeris in Final Fantasy 7, to the point of deluding myself into spending hundreds of hours trying to revive her lifeless corpse... I know I can't be the only person to have slight apprehension about walking about quiet towns on misty mornings after playing Silent hill... are the psychological effects of these games lestened because their hardware doesn't have the cell powerhorse behind it? I think not...

Of course I'm confident that MGS4 will be the most emotionally gripping in the series so far, but not due in major part to the hardware behind the scenes... Hideo Kojima is a fantastic story teller, his team is capable of making you feel some really powerful things as he's demonstrated time and again throughout the series (sniper wolf! noooooo!), and even without the might of the PS3, Im sure theyd have had an epic on their hands!
