Kitase confirms simultaneous PS3 and Xbox 360 launch for Final Fantasy XIII, both versions "pretty much the same" |
Ó

Final Fantasy XIII still has a relatively ambiguous "Spring 2010" overseas release, but producer Yoshinori Kitase did have some good news for gamers in Europe. At GamesCom, Kitase confirmed that both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game will be getting a simultaneous launch in Europe. The North American launch will also be simultaneous.
Kitase also reiterated that the European launch won't be too far behind the one for North America. "For previous titles it took usually about a year to localise each version and bring it over to Europe, but for this title there should be a considerably shorter gap and [we'll] bring it to European territories as close to the North American release as possible,” he said.
It was also confirmed at GamesCom that Square Enix is aiming for three discs for the Xbox 360 version. Kitase said that three isn't a final number yet, however, as they're still working on it. He also noted that while hardware differences will probably result in some subtle differences, both versions will be "pretty much equal, both in terms of content and the visuals as well."

I HATE multi Discs. I am a HUGE metal Gear fan and I hated that about the first one. I Didnt get FF7 till it came out on PSN. I didnt get blue Dragon or ANY multi-Disc Game discs. I just dont like the fact its Multi-Discs. I dont play PC games so I am not used to it either. I will be getting this on PS3.
June 21 2010. And oddly I can't seem to find Versus anywhere on their site
So you waited over a decade just to play FFVII, just because it was multi-disc? You're either a poor troll or just an idiot. It's not like you had to swap discs every two seconds or after every save. As overrated as FF7 was, even I had to chime in on this. And 99.999% of PC games today are on DVD-ROMs, and let you install them or play them from the same disc, and then there's Steam, download full games and play them at any time. Get out of here, STALKER.
It's just me or I remember the people of square saying that they would make the ps3 version the best it could be(even though nobody believed them)?
they didn't have to tone done anything on the PS3 version so it could stand side by side with the 360.
tone down...
The PS3 version is already the best, it only has 1 disk compared to the 360's 3.
Gaming sites always do that....and what? They're 100% wrong all the time.
Not 3 discs NOOOOO ohh my goodness my whole gaming experience just got ruined.. lol man there some intelligent people out there :) But just in case everyone is worried about the multi disc on the 360 if anyone played Lost Odyssey most of what filled up those discs were the cut scenes and dialogue then the last disc had the whole world and everything you needed to get that you might have forgot about anyone thinking ur gonna be in mid game and gotta switch discs out of nowhere is just well most of the pissperfection 3 fanboys
wtf?
lol you know you change discs with FF7 and Blue Dragon like once every couple dozen hours right? You need to put down games completely and head outside if that's too much for you
The Japanese version will be released first (later this year), and it's a PS3 exclusive in Japan, and therefore completely unaffected by the 360 (the devs said so themselves, see 'Related articles' after the report above). Therefore there's no way they're going to tone down the worldwide PS3 versions compared to the Japanese version, they will be exactly the same (except for the language). And if these release dates are met, then it puts an end to all the nonsense fanboys were saying before about Microsoft and the 360 delaying the game, since the gap between the Japanese release and NA is in keeping with previous FF games in the main series (actually, for Europe in particular, it's better than most previous FF games).
Whoa good move h12456208. Blue Dragon isn't worth the buy. Multi-disc sucks I know, but missing out good game because you hate it is kinda dumb. You should have used Star Ocean 4 as an example for your hate since Blue Dragon did multi-disc right even though the still sucks. FF games did multi-disc games the best. They had most of the story in the 1st 2 discs and then last 2 discs mostly to tie up the knot and get ready for the ending and sidequests.
what is the ps3 "Power"? the 360 with alot of discs? what happened to super computing amazing cell 8 processor stuff they were talking about? did they just make that up to sell me blueray?
is what i want, could care less about this game. lol im just happy i don't have to get off my lazy ass to swap discs, but im expecting to be a bullcrap install time in this game..
You could not have said anything else that would make you seem less intelligent. Well done.
Right cuz Gamestop of all people know what's up
The Cell tech itself is capable of running at "supercomputer" speeds, the fastest super PC in the world uses a bunch of Cell procs combined with other procs to achieve its speeds. But the PS3 only has one special Cell proc with only 7 of 8 SPEs active. One PS3 by itself is not nearly a supercomputer, and I don't think Sony ever claimed it to be. It is very powerful tho
yes multi disc is the only choice for a complet FF in XBOX360 , but dont forget the HDD where u can instal the game or the discs zvzry disc takes about 6 GB so a 120 hdd is OK rather than scratching ur final disc just befor the big boss and the kiss scene lol .
You guys are annoying sometimes. Always making a huge deal of disk swaps, exclusivity, or the "power" of the processor. The gameplay, graphics, and content are going to be nearly identical, they didn't downgrade the PS3 version in order for it to be on the 360 so get over it, and quit being whiney fanboys.
This means that if MS hadn't paid Square off we could be playing this on PS3 already. Considering before it went multi-platform they were well on their way into development on the PS3 version. Then later said they would not even start the 360 version until after the PS3 version was done. Now somehow they will release at the same time, BS, Microsoft knows that if it even had 3 months of exclusivity on PS3 that everyone would buy it on PS3..... Oh well, I am not expecting too much from this game....considering every other RPG Square has released this generation has blown REALLY badly.....
They said they would finish the PS3 build before even starting on the 360 version. This guaranteed the PS3 version would be done first....but it seems they are holding it back until the 360 version in complete. Which is a piss off for me. Also if this game is only going to take 3 dvd's they definitely cut some content out or really never planned on taking advantage of blu-ray.
The hype around the cell processor is funny, it's just a new type of processor... when using multiple processors of any type, it's also called a super computer? So what's the big deal? There is none, it's exactly as fast as other processors. Besides, Microsoft pulled a badass business move by purchasing Cell technology for the Xbox while letting Sony pay for all the development. Lol, xbox is just a ps3 with no bluray!
The Cell tech itself is a great improvement over conventional proc tech. But the performance difference between the PS3 and 360 is negligible, in fact using the tests folks have done on the two it's arguable that the 360 has a slight performance edge when it comes to games because it has a more efficient memory setup and a more powerful GPU Power of the PS3 equals 50GB games, that's all Sony ever meant with those comments. And even if you don't have a problem with multiple discs (I sure as hell don't) it still poses a good question: why buy a game on 3 discs when you can get it on 1?
SE have always said that like ALL the other games in the main series, the Japanese version will be released first, followed by NA and Europe. If you were being really honest here (instead of being swayed by your change in personal bias), you would recall this as the pattern for all the FF games in the main series. So it's Japan first, NA an average of 6 months later, then Europe an average of 6 months after NA. You should also recall that FF games have ALWAYS kept us waiting, often with numerous delays to the expected release date. FFXIII is exclusive to the PS3 in Japan, so it has absolutely nothing to do with the 360 over there, and therefore the 360 doesn't affect it in anyway at all. SE have said this enough times already. In Japan, they're trying to make the game as good as it possibly can be on the PS3. Now the last time I checked, the Japanese version still wasn't ready, it's due for release at the end of this year, so even if it was still a PS3 exclusive, we would NOT be playing it on the PS3 already. If there's any compromise, it will be on the 360 version, NOT the PS3, since the NA and European PS3 versions are not going to be any different to the Japanese version other than language. So please stop making this into something it isn't. The FFXIII we'll be playing on the PS3 is the same game it was before it was announced for the 360. The delay between Japan and NA is no different to previous games in the main series, and if anything, European gamers benefit the most since they'll get it much earlier than previous games (where they use to have to wait for up to a year!).
maybe square enix just say whatever sony or microsoft tells them to say cause they pay them
The typical trend of Square releasing their games in Japan first then to NA and EU is not what I was talking about. There was an interview done shortly after the announcement that FF was going multi-platform. In this interview they said they would finish development on PS3 (which was already 25-30% done) before even starting on the 360 build. If this did indeed happen we would not be at 90% done on PS3 and 70% done on 360. The PS3 version would have been done a LONG time ago and would have already been released in Japan, and most likely would have been released in NA as well. Obviously they slowed down on PS3 development in order to have the 360 version catch up, so that there could be a simultaneous release on both consoles.
http://ps3.qj.net/Final-Fantasy-XIII-scans-no-delay-360-development-won-t-start-until-PS3-version-is-done-more/pg/49/aid/124215 Quote: "Because it is coming to two platforms, there might be some fans that are worried it may become generic, so that it will fit onto both consoles, but the PS3 version is what is in development right now and the team is looking to specialise it for the PS3 so that the game is maximised, and then they will port it over to the 360 and full utilise the capabilities of that console. We're trying to use the hardware to the max for both consoles, so there will be no decrease in quality with it going to both platforms." I've seen nothing which changes this fact. The game runs on a multi-format game engine, so of course the engine is up and running on the 360, and so code and graphics would have been ported over and tested on the 360, but not to the detriment of the PS3 version, since serious work on the 360 version (optimization, splitting across discs, etc), won't occur until the PS3 version is done. And you said "Obviously they slowed down on PS3 development in order to have the 360 version catch up, so that there could be a simultaneous release on both consoles." But AGAIN, there is no simultaneous release in Japan, it's a PS3 exclusive there and will be the first version released, like all the previous games in the series, so development has not been slowed down by the 360 in Japan. The ONLY release the 360 could 'possibly' hold up is the release of FF in NA, but that's if porting to the 360 takes longer than the language changes (which took up to 6-7 months on previous versions). So since the Japanese version hasn't been finished yet, we would NOT be playing it today, since the PS3 exclusive game for that region isn't finished yet. And if you really think FF would have been released by now, then you obviously haven't followed the previous games in the series from first announcement up until release, because delays from the expected release date for FF games is almost legendary amongst it's fans. Gamers have almost always had to wait longer than expected!
If Square-Enix was serious about making FF13 the best, they would have used Blu-ray to the max. I hope they prove us wrong.
Some games that can use Blu-ray better than using multiple dvds would be fighting games with multiple characters, racing games with a ton of cars, and massive open world games. All those games would better benefit the use of Blu-ray. One thing though is there is always hard drive install games.
do you ? It's very simple really, if the 360 is 70% complete while the PS3 version is 90% they OBVIOUSLY were using manpower that could have been put to work on the PS3 version, in order to have the 360 version also at 70% Get it ? If the people working on "porting" the 360 version were working on getting the PS3 version completed first then 360 would be at 0% and PS3 version would have been done already, yes probably 6-8 months ago. Which means Japan would have had it for a long time already and we in NA could be expecting a release well before holidays if not right now. Obviously the guy was full of it when he said they would finish development on PS3 then begin porting it to 360....
FFXIII runs on a multiformat game engine, correct? Yes of course it's correct. It's an engine which runs on PC, 360 and PS3, just like Unreal Engine 3. So quite CLEARLY the game engine is being developed by a team at SE, and OTHER teams will use that game engine to create their games, including the FFXIII team. So first priority is to finish the PS3 version for Japan. That's a fact. You are assuming that ANY work which has been done for the 360 version (even if it's the game engine development team optimizing the game engine) MUST have taken time and resources away from the PS3 version, which is absolute nonsense. It's pure assumption on your part. Just like your assumption MS that has paid them (sorry, but that's pure fanboyism). And finished 6-8 months ago? I see, so EVERYTHING about game development is ONLY technical is it? So if 6-8 months ago, they still hadn't finished designing, refining and optimizing ALL the final cutscenes, if they hadn't finished ALL the voice acting, if they hadn't finished ALL the bug testing, if they hadn't finished optimizing the PS3 version, if they hadn't finished ALL the music for the game etc, ALL of which has NOTHING to do with a 360 version, then somehow the game would have STILL been released? R-i-g-h-t. Porting to the 360 is just ONE of MANY aspects of the development of FFXIII, and therefore to ignore ALL the other MAJOR aspects of the game's development and lay the blame for _your_ perceived delay on the 360, especially in light of FF's reputation for delays, is just good old fashion ignorance Shatterdome, sorry but it really is. :-(
Firstly - For someone who I always assumed was rather experienced in gaming, I'm surprised at your lack of appreciation for what goes into creating a game, and in particular, the way Square (now Square-Enix) works. They are perfectionists. Fact. The only company I can compare them to in this was is Polyphony. Both will NEVER release the next version of their main game series (GT for Polyphony, FF for SE) unless they are 100% satisfied with it. Hence the delays, hence the long wait for gamers. So if you think the approximate release date for FFXIII is set in stone (and that of GT5 for that matter), then think again. If during game testing, there is ANYTHING that SE are not satisfied with (technically or artistically), then FFXIII WILL be delayed. And they will keep delaying it until it's as perfect as they can get it for THAT time. THAT's the way they work, that's the way they've always worked, and so it's nonsense to blame MS and the 360 in the way you have here. Secondly, I have to express my disappointment in you Shatterdome (not that it will mean much to you I expect, but I'm saying it anyway). When I first came to QJ, you where very much biased towards the 360, not quite a 360 fanboy, but not far from it. Then there was a GREAT period, yes great, when you appeared unbiased, seeing things from both sides and creating some good posts in the process (of course, I wasn't aware of your shifting interest in the PS3 at the time). I think you had a lot of respect from QJ readers at the time, probably more than you suspect. And then you got rid of your 360 and got a PS3 instead and it ALL changed. Now suddenly, you were saying EXACTLY the same kind of PS3 fanboys comments which YOU used to argue against a few years earlier. Now you post the same 'PS3 is way more powerful', 'MS are teh evil' and '360 is past it's peak' comments which you used to argue against. Now suddenly, it appears MS and the 360 could do nothing right whilst Sony and the PS3 could do no wrong. How times have changed. What a shame. :-(
Sony probably just payed him LOL
