Killzone 2: will it measure up? - Image 1

Well, many have been wondering what would be the PS3's answer to the 360's Halo. Halo 3 Beta has been elbowing its way to game headlines since it was announced and some conspiracy theories have been brewing just under the surface. Some say Sony's been prepping Killzone 2 to go up against Bungie's Halo 3.

The last time we saw Killzone 2 by developer Guerrilla Games was during E3 (which seemed like ages ago) but we remember it being said as the PS3's "secret weapon". Reportedly, Sony bypassed showing Killzone 2 on Gamers' Day last year since they opted to show Resistance instead.

If rumors are to be believed, a demo for Killzone 2 will be out before Halo's beta. Is Killzone really that far development-wise? And will it build up the same amount of hype?

We'll have to wait and see.

man i hope this comes out soon

» this is flipping hilarious!

when i played this game i got (the first killzone) i got the impression that it was ment to simulate war as in you CANT run and gun which is what you do 99% of the time in halo, so trying to compare the two is like comparing a Mac to a PC. There is no comparison! they're two different things. Next time at least attempt to compare the same TYPE of FPS. its like comparing any of the rainbow six games to halo. It just doesnt work because rainbow six is like advanced swat where three bullets is enough to kill you and halo needs MUCH MUCH more than that.

» to the dude above me

I may going out on a line here but I'm willing to bet you didn't do so hot on those reading comprehension tests back in jr. high and high school. Yes you did read the words Killzone and Halo 3 in the same article, but the comparison was not on the game types but rather the games desired effects on their respective console popularity. More simply M$ and $ony are painting Halo3 and Killzone 2 as, "the reason to own our console."

Whew now that I got my daily flame out of the way I can go to sleep. Hahaha Just kidding, sorry for being too harsh I was just in that kind of mood.

On a final note, I've been a Sony fan for a long long time but I must say I've been enjoying my 360 a lot more than my ps3 as of late. Needless to say I don't really trust anything Sony says anymore so I really hope, maybe in vein, that Killzone 2 doesn't suck balls.....well at least as many/much balls as Kutaragi. HA!

by Your English teacher - 2007-02-06 02:12
» sucka!

For someone who is concerned with education you should probably learn how to spell vain. A vein is what transports blood, vain is the adjective.

sony should really be careful with this and not just release it for the point of sales and end up with a ***** game, they should make sure that Killzone is as polished as it can be and then release to completely pwn Halo because if they release a glitchy incomplete game they will struggle to recover from the 360 fanboy bull*****.

Thats jst my view

A downloadable demo verses millions online in a multi-player beta test.

Wouldn't the demo have to be like 12GBs? 20 minutes of 1080p FMV followed by 2 minutes of game play?

Killzone (1) was suppose to be the "halo-killer"

» halo = w/e

personally i dont see why everyone loves Halo so much, i guess its cos there aint that many good FPS out there, so when a mediocre one comes along everyone goes crazy... Halo is overated, simple as..

by Seoulfood - 2007-02-06 08:34
» I agree

Killzone and Halo have very different feels to them. One's a sci-fi shooter and another's more like a war shooter. I personally liked Killzone better.

Halo definately was technically superior, but I just thought Killzone was more fun.

by jmartin - 2007-02-06 08:34
» ...

people love halo because bungie perfected fps gameplay. fast, accurate, responsive, lag free. noone else has matched them since. get over it or get a 360 and enjoy it. quit hating.

wasnt the first killzone supposed to be a "halo killer", too? what ever happened to that one?

by Seoulfood - 2007-02-06 08:37
» well..

It can be said that Halo and Killzone are competing with each other. Because even if they are games meant to sell their specific console, the sales will still be heavily influenced by the other game.

People won't say, "oh Halo and Killzone are both good reasons to buy a 360 and ps3! I think I'll buy both consoles!"

People will buy one or the other, so in a sense they are competing with each other.

Just clarifying

by Kilven - 2007-02-06 08:45
» Dream on

You say -

If they release a glitchy incomplete game they will struggle to recover from the 360 fanboy bull*****.

I think you will find if they do that despite your 360 illusions you will find it is the PS3 owners that will be saying the game is a load of bull***** and they have had enough.

To be a Halo beater you are going to have to copy a lot of Halo to make that claim so even if and thats a small if (especially if the rumored PS3 ram restrictions are true) it did turn out as good as Halo then I guess people will just say -

Ahh but all you did was copy parts of Halo!, so you see its all good to own a 360.

by The_UnBiased_One - 2007-02-06 08:45
» Not Quiet True..

You obviously havent played unreal which is a Million Times Better,More fun, more Mods and Maps,Better Graphics.

But you,re probably talking about consoles, yet halo3 is simply overhyped, thats why bungie and MS released the latest "brute" trailer,so that the hype dont take the fans too far from reality of this very medicore game

by Seoulfood - 2007-02-06 09:14
» Halo

Halo was good back because there weren't any FPS's on the consoles at all. Halo was the first good console FPS that was easily playable. Halo 2 brought quality multiplayer into the arena.

But compared to what's out now, the old Halos have nothing all that great. Technical stuff aside, if you played FPS's now, and then played halo for the first time, I don't think you'd be impressed.

Each Halo was considered revolutionary. Halo 3 will have to bring a whole new arsenal to the table in order to have the same impact that the first few did.

Pretty graphics won't cut it, and if the gameplay's exactly the same but with a few new guns, then Halo's toast. It'lll have it's loyal followers from before, but it won't get many new players. People will probably much rather play Gears than the new Halo.

Killzone's Killzone. A killzone 2 doesn't really have to be that much better than it's predecessor to be a huge step up. Killzone1 was technically bland. But I think a Killzone for the ps3 will help the ps3 a lot, because it'll be the first fps to maybe show off the systems technical prowess, assuming it'll be anything like the trailer they showed. Resistance was good, but it wasn't a particularly "next-gen" experience.

by Mr. Common Sense - 2007-02-06 09:24
» No its not True!

Well its called a rumor. Did Sony even announce this or its just a junkie from his garage making pointless topics about this.

by RastaDator - 2007-02-06 09:53
» Graphics are very important

indeed! Gears has shown that! great and very bloody graphics (U3 + art direction) score 9.6 (GS), SONY knows what important graphics are and they are trying to be the closer or even to surpass the E32005 vid.

I very much doubt we will see many innovations gameplay-wise, perhaps open-ended with some sort of tactical action, with many enemies on screen at the same time, drivable vehicles, some cinematic telling you what to do in order to accomplish your objectives, but the very focus of this title will be to showcase what the PS3 is capable, awesome graphics with awesome sound. I really hope they get Killzone running at 1080p with no slowdowns, 720p would be cool too and more than enough for most people but is not up to the hype SONY has created.

by CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2007-02-06 12:33
» They Need To Make Games Fit The Console

What I mean is game companies need to make games work better for consoles when porting them. For instance, the PS3 has a hard drive and some Xbox 360s do not. If some of the restrictions of ram is an issue they need to program to fit the processor and utilize the hard drive more. These things would benefit both consoles but I guess it would cost more to do overall.

Your right. I have an Xbox and don't own Halo or even Halo 2. I rented Halo and tried to get into it but I quickly became bored. A friend of mine has Halo 2 and I played it and could not get into it either. The graphics were outstanding though but I just could not enjoy it for much else.

Wow you must be a very limited gamer to say Halo is a perfect FPS.

Unbalanced Weapons

Slow paced game

Accurate is something thats unrealistic and takes no skill to master.

The game is not nearly as responsive as other games.

Its far from lag free, your lying because everyone on Xbox Live experiences lag in halo, even once.

If halo2 was a PC game, it would rate a 6 at best. Since its coming out for the PC, they probably will speed things up to make up for the KB/M interface.

» This would rock!

Both games have been hyped, both games are developed exclusively on highly contested platforms, and both games are of the same general Genre.

If Halo 3 and Killzone 2 have about the same amount of development time for their consoles (give or take a quarter-year), then we, as gamers, should see one HELL of an epic fight for Next-Gen domination.

If they're released about the same time, then this could very well settle the 'Console War'.

This new Halo has to be SUPERB and bring other-worldly experiences if it wants to live up to the hype it's building up.

I congratulate sony for this market ploy. Obviously Killzone was a B grade title. Sony then shows a pre-rendered clip of Killzone 2 at E3 and tell people it's in game. Now they are trying to pit it against Halo 3 to try and promote the title as something spectacular. Welcome done, your zombies took the bait.

Halo was last gen. Someone really should come up with something else. Not b/c Halo is bad, but b/c its been done. We don't need more of the same with better graphics. I hope someone steps up.

Killzone could definitely do this, but time will tell. Sony needs to get the demo out ASAP to create a buzz. I hope the game lives up to the buzz.

It would be great if PS3 owners could get both Killzone 2 and MGS4 in 2007.

by FanboyHater - 2007-02-06 19:27
» Isn't the "Halo is overated" line OLD now.

Geez, don't some of you have anything else to say at times?

So YOU think Halo is overated, ok fine, what do you want, a medal?

There is not a single highly rated game, movie, song, album, TV series, book, car, company etc, that isn't considered overated by others. Go on, name something MOST rate highly that isn't considered overated by somebody else! Name a highly rated game which someone doesn't think is overated! Give up trying, because it doesn't exist!

So please, it's really OLD and boring now.

Anyway, going back to Killzone 2. There is nothing to suggest it will be a great game, despite all the hype about it and despite the pre-rendered trailer (tsk tsk Sony). The first game was average, and aimed much higher than it could reach on the PS2. Until we see some REAL screenshots and movies of the game, together with some hands-on previews, Killzone on the PS3 will just be another hyped game.

Given the previous Halo games, I'm far more hopeful of Halo 3 being a great next-gen FPS (regardless of those who think it's overated, Halo did more for console FPSs than any other game, including Goldeye). But again, I'd like to see a bit more from the game first, including latest build screenshots and movies and hands-on previews.

We'll see.

» Hmmm.....

Well i think personally given the fact that Guerilla was able to tap into the ps2's power for their game was, to me, impressive. Also seeing as how Insomniac and Guerilla are both branches of Sony's gaming studios, it is safe to assume that there is going to be sharing of information between the two studios.Given how great Resistance looked i'm sure that Guerilla will hit very close to the pre-rendered trailer.Remember Killzone was one of the first games to really tap in the console's power and who's online play was addictive with it's primary and secondary weapon funcionality that you see in Resistance. From what i've seen Halo 3 doesn't even come close to Gears of War graphically and how it's only being limited to 16 players MAXIMUM!!!!!To me that's something that should stay last gen.I mean I loved rumble pit in Halo 2 and if I was able to take on 39 other people at once and rank at the top i know i'm bad ass.You boast how your system can hold thousands of enemies on the screen at once but you could only mustar 32 via xbox live and that was pushing it.Even in Gears of War when there is a smoke grenade and three other people it lags.Oh and the ps3 is only using 40% of it's power, the cell cant really tap into the RSx's power.Well went a little off topic but the fact still remains the same Sony kicks ass and so will Killzone 2 and the brillant minds at Guerilla.

by ooh - 2007-02-06 23:31
» yer hmm zzzzz

You say -----

Gears of War when there is a smoke grenade and three other people it lags.

YER RIGHT and I take it you was playing it on a 56k modem, it would never of passed MS quality control for a start and this game has sold millions and you are the only one who has this issue and amazingly you have a PS2/PS3 and dont even own the 360 ?????.

And get at least one thing right, the more players in a game the more distant the game feels, you try keeping the team together with a lot of players any gameplan just falls to pieces, by the way you do have headsets on the PS3 dont you?.

----

Oh and the ps3 is only using 40% of it's power, the cell cant really tap into the RSx's power.

Yes of course it is and the 360 being out longer is at about 50% its power, but then the 360 does not have any ram problems.

» Dumbass

Tell that to the Japanese who hate halo and love Gears of war you dumb *****.Halo is not the best game ever made. You could have atleast said best game in it's genre and that still might be pushing it.Everyone knows that the story in halo2 sucked balls and the only thing that made it sell was its multiplayer and high anticipation.Killzone2 is also a very highly anticipated game especially since now that the playing fields are level graphically.Oh like the guy said earlier it's the most expensive game in production right now.Oh and for that other guy I have owned my 360 since Launch and i have Gears of War so i know what the ***** i'm talking about when i say it lags with and smoke grenade and 3 people in one area.Plus Microsoft standards only require the game to played in atleast 720p, xbox live enabled, and run at 30fps.Watch E3 2004!As far as call of duty goes it depends on the developer.Fight Night and Oblivion excel on the ps3 and some of it is due to more time.Halo 3 is in it's third installment of the game and Killzone is only in it's second.Given the amount of money put into production of the game it's hard to say that it will disappoint. As for Halo 3 in EGM they say the graphics can only be compared if you sit it next to Halo 2,which says alot about you "Next-Gen" Halo.If they're game looked that great then it would be like GOW and show gameplay as a trailer not some pre-rendered crap that looks like it's for the Halo Movie.Oh and Killzone you play from 4 people's prespectives not just one, so that's four different ways to tell a story and not just one.
