Some of you may be asking, why in Helghast's name did Sony choose to make the Killzone 2 demo a pre-order exclusive before release?

Some might argue that the point of the demo is to help the buyer decide if he or she wants to get the game. And now? You have to get the game first (or at least, pre-order it), and only then you'd gain access to the demo. Why oh why is this so? Well, here's your answer!

This comes from SCEA product marketing VP Scott Steinberg, so if there's anyone who can explain why they decided to use this tactic for K2, it's him.

Offering a playable demo to motivate preorders speaks to our confidence in the appeal of a game such as Killzone 2. We take this approach when we are convinced that the experience will cement a consumerÂ’s interest in purchasing. Retailers will then merchandise those demos within their stores and online to maximize their visibility. Through this process, consumers are often times able to reserve their copy of the final game, which provides an incentive to purchase and helps seal the deal. We also offer demos on the PSN, which we have done in the past with great success, and will continue to make that available. Killzone 2, for example, will have a downloadable demo launch in North America the week that the game is launching, for consumers who prefer that option.

Well, I'm not sure if that's good enough for most of you, but we'll take it nonetheless. Here's some good news though. If you thought that the only way to get the demo before the game gets released is via pre-order, worry not. Turns out that they will release the demo over PSN a day before the game hits retail.

Yep, the free-for-all PSN demo for Killzone 2 goes live on February 26!

people start crying and the trolling starts, where were the pre-release demos of Gears of War 2, Dead Space, Fallout 3, Halo 3, LBP, GTA4, Fable 2, MGS4... I could go on but I won't.

Did the lack of a demo prevent you from buying those games or make them any worse?

What has been done here has been done for over a decade and is this any worse than having to buy a completely separate game just to get into a beta (Counter-Stike: Source - PC, Super Street Fighter II HD Remix - 360...)?

I didn't think so.

Yeah, but the thing that sucks, when I went and got my demo...it doesn't start until February 5th. Doesn't exactly give us much time until the real demo is out on the PS3. For you people out there...you don't necessarily need to preorder the game to play the same time that we who preordered it. Our preorder demo end's when yours starts...its kinda not a huge rush. 21 day difference. Not to mention at that point the game comes out the day after. I'm not stopping anyone, but you really can't use a demo, even if you preorder, until next month anyhow...I wish it was out now.

21 days is easily long enough to get the jump ahead on the rest of the competition mate ;-)

is this dated for the EU demo release? or the US one?

I'll get the game a day earlier before it is released or maybe even earlier than that

Halo 3 beta... F*ucken had to buy a $60 game to get into that beta. Though not entirely worth the $60, crackdown was a pretty decent game.

O boy I have to pre-order for a demo. Its not like you are going to lose the money forever. Goto your local gamestop put 5 bucks down and get the demo. If you don't like it, go back get your 5 bucks back.

So can we stop writing articles on this crap?

k

Thanks

# You can get a refund on preorders?phiyuku 2009-01-15 13:23
I thought you can't get your $5 back. You can just not buy the game but that $5 is gone forever. So you paid $5 for a demo basically or if you want the game still you didn't lose anything since that $5 is going towards your purchase. Atleast that's what I thought.

lol GS cannot keep your money without providing any product. You change your mind, you get the $5 back

If all you want is the demo, you can preorder the game, use the demo code, and go back and cancel the preorder the same day. That would be pretty underhanded and you won't be making any friends at GS, but you can do it
