Keiji Inafune on why Devil May Cry 4 went multiplatform |
Listed in: PS3, Xbox 360, PC Gaming Tags: Capcom, Keiji Inafune, Sony
Ó
Demon-slaying Dante first appeared on the PlayStation 2 back in 2001, and Devil May Cry's tight relationship with Sony's console started. As we all know, that soon changed after Capcom's major announcement of developing Devil May Cry 4 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. We've heard that it's about the installed user base, but there's more than meets the eye. Capcom's Head of R&D, Keiji Inafune, had a chat with website Spong to talk about everything DMC4. When asked about the decision to go multiplatform, he replied:
Until now itÂ’s been hard for us to develop multi-platform games, but
recently we have developed this development engine that allows us to
develop a game in the engine and then put it on to PS3 and 360. Developing Dead Rising and Lost Planet
helped flush out everything in the development tool system – which is
now pretty much complete, aside from the usual upgrades – so we decided
to use that engine, make it for the 360 and the PS3 with Devil May Cry 4.
So,
now we can get the game out into the hands of more gamers - because 360
has such a huge installed base already, especially in the US, and as
game makers we want as many people to have the chance to play our games
as possible.
It looks like developing games for the 360 is very attractive. "It's extremely easy to develop for [360], it just works really well," Inafune told Spong. The PS3, while a powerhouse, is still an unsolved puzzle even for gaming giant Capcom. "We still havenÂ’t had enough time working with the [PS3] to really explore and exploit the machine to its fullest potential," he added.

I don't know, from what I've seen of DMC4, I'm not all that enthused about it. The 3rd one was great but not better than one. And that's what I'm looking for.
Until they can make one look weak, I won't buy another one no matter what system it's on.
BTW it IS crap how he says previous development made it easy to co develop DMC4.
Sounds like money to me!

360 is almost as powerful just that its easyer to develop for... oh well, less time spending on coding i think its better.
i mean how long has mgs4 been in development? i think there was some material back in e3 2005 or 2006 that ain't good.... 2008 is 2 or 3 years.

What does is the crap that developers say rather than just come out with the truth.
Is saying MS payed us a sizable amount to port this game over to their system that hard?
It's business, that's how business works and at the end of the day that's what it's all about, making the money.
So why do idiots like this guy come out and try to insult people's intelligence by saying things like,
"As game makers we want as many people to have the chance to play our games as possible."
Yet as noted above, neither Dead Rising or Lost Planet (which is going to PC) are coming to the PS3. Very contradictory to his statement where he tries to sound as if he's looking out for all the gamers.
If that was the case, these two titles would go to every platform regardless of the install base so that gamers of all systems could enjoy them.
As far as his other statement,
"We still haven’t had enough time working with the [PS3] to really explore and exploit the machine to its fullest potential."

It's an evolving process where the more you do it the better you get, not where you put out one title and instantly push the system to it's limits. Inafune of all people should know that. He needs to take a page from Team Ninja and just STFU and make a good game.

So rather than tell you,
"Yeah MS paid us a pretty penny to keep the games 360 exclusive."
They come out and make statements like the crap above and come off sounding like a two faced lying son of a Mc'F*ckfart.

You'll find as many immature gamers on BOTH networks, one isn't more 'mature' than the other. In fact, in *may* be worse on PSN because it's free, but I'm not going to act as if that's a fact. Where ever you have people online you'll find a$$holes. It's the same with online forums, like here on QJ which is jam packed with stupid fanboys argueing all the time.
That said, AoxomamoxoA, you know full well that the PS3 is more than capable of running Dead Rising and Lost Planet, so please stop deliberately adding fuel to the fanboy fire.

If they are working on sequels, then it's possible that THESE games would make it to the PS3. Isn't that a better option? Wouldn't you prefer sequels to Dead Rising and Lost Planet on the PS3 instead?
So come on, enough of the "Microsoft paid them" rubbish. :)

secondly, 10 yr olds are not indicative of the common gamer. Although you may hear immature kids online that don't have the tact to watch what they say, the average console game player is ~30 yrs old and thus these kids are the minority of the group. (this comment isn't against your argument, but its something to take into account for everyone reading)
Lastly, Gears of War has nothing to do with whether or not a game developer is going to release games multiplatform. Its merely an example of a game that has sold well and is a top game on a console. It was not made by Capcom, thus it it is not relevant to the topic of this artical. This artical isn't about whether game developers in general are going to stay console exclusive, but why one decided to switch to multiplatform game developing. Personally i don't think his reasoning is BS. Even though there is no indication that dead rising and lost planet will be ported to PS3, if capcom was working on their development game engine with those games, whose to say it wont be ported in the future. Capcom is definatly making a smart move going multiplatform because it basically means that they are not limiting themselves to one particular fan base. I personally see more ports coming from the 360 to the PS3 and vice verse from Capcom in the future

For Example RE4 why did they make it Execlusive on the game cube while the Ps2 was better than the gamecube ?

Besides, game developers like Capcom don't have the mentality of fanboys, therefore they don't love or hate Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony.

No they didn't, not even close!

because of that they port the game to the ps2 to recover the lost .
and do not forget that RE CV was an Exlusive game for the DreamCast !
Hence: RE Zero still "GC Execlusive" while ps2 is selling alot of consoles in the world in this time
there is another example about street fighter if you want ?
