Kazunori Yamauchi responds to GT5 track controversy

Sony and Polyphony Digital got into some trouble with an Italian organization regarding the use of 17 contrade flags that appeared in a track in Gran Turismo 5's karting video. While accurate, the Consortium for the Protection of the Palio was not happy with the way Polyphony Digital added the said flags in the game without permission. Another unhappy party in this exchange is the game's designer, Kazunori Yamauchi, who has now commented on the issue.

"We can remove them in an instant," he said via Twitter. As a game designer, however, Yamauchi still clearly feels that having the flags in place still would've made for better detail. "Erasing them is somewhat regrettable," he added.

It's still not clear on whether or not Sony and Polyphony Digital will be securing the necessary permits to use the flags, or if they'll just "remove them in an instant." Let's just hope that this little squabble won't delay that much-awaited November release.

So I don't get it, what's the big deal. Would this be like having a California state flag on a track that's supposed to be in California? Or is there some greater meaning.
Usually unless the game is violent or disrespectful, I would think it just adds realism. But like I said, I don't know the importance of these flags to the culture in that area.

It's not about culture or any sor of similar matter, it's more about "you are using my logo without our permission and without [specially] paying us for the rights. So yes, like all branding/trademarks issues it's mostly about the money and reputation(or so they say).

though a small detail in the game, the flags are symbolic of 400 years of history in the piazza del ocampo. i hope they come up with some form of arrangement

Well seeing how alot of people here don't know about it. I would say by putting them up, people would actually know that these flags exist

yeah they can remove them easily, the thing is, how much work the person put in to making those flags, and how they move and all, that flag must have been at least a week or more of work, maybe

I think they should keep them there; No point in delaying a game that's already on track to meet its release date (Yeah, I know, that's slightly wrong info. The game hasn't gone gold yet.).

if this was a game that dealt with politics or was a FPS, RPG, some other game i would get it. But its a racing game and basically giving free advertising to that city

"We can remove them in an instant" sound very bad , i suggest to polyphony to release the game then flow it by a required update to remove that things . so then we will win time and close mouths .

:P the things people do just to get noticed. Knowing that GT is popular, the Consortium for the Protection of the Palio just wanted to get noticed by adding more problems to the already much delayed game that a lot of people are waiting for. They are just ruining it for everybody and in return they are also accomplishing nothing.

use made up designs like a gt5 logo instead of just deleting it so we know there is suppose to be something there. They can keep there flags for all I care i wouldnt give it a second look anyways.

Just save some time and replace each flag design with a generic semi-hateful message towards them. "The Palio Sucks".
