Kaz Hirai squashes US price drop rumours for PS3 |
Ó
Most people have likely heard by now that Sony has dropped the price of the 20 GB PlayStation 3 in Japan. Instead of 60,000 yen (approximately 515 US dollars) it is now "only" 49,980 yen (approximately 430 US dollars). Of course, this led to rumours that Sony would be dropping the price of the console in all parts of the world. Sadly, that will not be the case."In the US, we're comfortable with the pricing that we announced at E3: $499 for the 20 gigabyte version and $599 for the 60-gigabyte version. There are no plans right now to adjust the pricing for the US market" says Kaz Hirai, Sony Computer President.
Well, it's not like a price drop will help at this point. With only 400,000 units for North America and 100,000 for Japan at launch, the console is sure to sell out. The PS2, GCN, 360, and DS have all shown us that people are willing to pay even twice retail price for a system for Christmas.

Why wouldn't they just drop it a little bit for the US? Cmon guys.
Think we'll see the HDMI cable standard on the PS3 in the US?
Now that the $500 model has HDMi, it's a great deal. I'm comfortable paying $500 for a superior console.
a price drop would have been nice though :)
This is serouisly outraegous.
I'm getting the 20 GB version now that it has a HDMI port.
$500 is a god damn steal, concidering that PS2 launched for $550 in the rest of the world, outside of the US. (I bought it at launch for that amount, as did everyone else in Europe.)
dosent matter money ismoney it comes n it goes....i will be getting the 600 one dosent matter if i have to pay800 for it...i know what im getting is worth it...all u lil kids cry cause u aint got money!!!!
^^^
Are you really taunting children???
That's just sad/mean.
"I'm comfortable paying $500 for a superior console. "
keep it coming fanboys! makes my days shine brighter.
none of you even know what HDMI is for
first person to get it right wins teh cookie
Buisness is buisness. If he thinks they were still sell out (and probably will) then you can't blame Sony for not giving us the price drop. Buisness is buisness.
The price cut was due to the wii and competing for Japan, where the wii is extremely popular, more so than in NA.
MS is cutting the price of the 360 in Japan as well, but it probably won't help. They might as well just pull the 360 off the shelves and send them elsewhere where people will actually buy it.
So now you get a game console and hi def movie player for $500... versus the 360 which can oly play games for $400. Great value in that $500 PS3 sku now.
If anybody was considering buying that stupid 360 add-on (face it, it is pretty stupid) they certainly must be reconsidering it now.
If the PS3 has free and compelling online capability then the 20GB model is good enough for me. Paying 60 bucks a year for online on 360 is not easy to swallow. Then there was that play and charge kit for 20 bucks I had to buy. So it all comes down to the online at this point...that will decide who is offering the better deal.
If only 400000 will be available at launch, imagine how many 20g will be available, 10,000? I dont think its fair that we have to pay more than japan. If I had money I would go to Japan and buy a japanese PS3, just because I dont want to pay 50 extra bucks so that that mthrfkr buys himself a new pair of shoes.
Oh Sony, you just never let up with the bad news (or in this case, trouncing of good news) for North America.
>10...as far as people who already have a 360 are concerned with Hi-Def DVD playback, they would sooner buy the add-on for two-hundred dollars than they would buy an entirely new system for six, and that's only if they care.
Most people already have a DVD player. If they don't, then I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they probably don't watch movies at home, and maybe, just maybe, don't watch or have a TV.
Blu-Ray is probably ahead of it's time. Yes, no one can dissagree tha it's a fantastic media storage medium, but in order to even see this enhanced, or rather, uncompressed image quality, Sony likely expects you to go out and buy a big-ass Hi-Def TV to go with your PS3. That, and you'll likely buy one from Sony, because they have a large stake in the television market, and their TVs are more or less going to be 100% compatible with the PS3 to give you the best picture you can get out of it. But unless you're willing to buy that big, $3000-$4000 dollar TV, well...I guess you're just S.O.L.
Oh, and >12...I have a sneaking feeling that Kaz's shoes cost more like...oh, I dunno....four-hundred dollars...each...lol
I'm sure of it right? I can't remember seeing it, cause it's ok to make 100,000 (which less than that for the 20gig version) have HDMI and take a smaller increase in loss, than take a larger loss and make all 20gig versions have it. If the price drop isn't coming our way, which is obvious, they want to make as much money as they can and they know Japan is Nintendo's, they only did it for the Wii.
I think if anyone should get a price drop, it's got to go to Europe. Those bastards have been so royally *****ed over time and time again. I'm surprise they bother supporting them with al lthe crap treatment. It's like Video Game Commandment 2: "Sony can't rape gamers. Cause they willingly take it up the ass." Very true.
Don't roast me either, just asking if HDMI was confirmed on all 20gig versions. And my own opinion is that Europe should get a price drop for the *****ty hand they got dealt out. Personally, I'm trying to get PS3 on launch to Ebay. Got a few guys on the inside at a couple of stores, hoping to make some good money. (We're the places that sell out and you know the douchebags screwed over the customers.) After that, I can easily spend 600 bucks on a Wii and games.
I haven't pre ordered my ps3 or plan to wait in huge ass lines, i will just wait til after christmas to get it and see of there is any bugs within the ps3 first.
in the specs for the 20 gig unit, it has HDMI listed as one of it's video components. there's no notice or asterix in the information that say the HDMI inclusion is for Japan only.
for the price information, however, there *is* a notice saying "Japan Only" concerning the price drop.
from what i can tell, and until Sony feels the need to deny it, i'm positive that all 20 gig PS3s from this point on has HDMI outputs. sweet.
The 400,000 rumor was squashed... I thought Sony came out and said 1.2million for NA?
its 1-1.2 million by tthe end of the year
