Kaz Hirai: PS3 sales will reach 11 million by end of fiscal year 2007 |
Ó
Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) chief executive Kaz Hirai is confident that the PlayStation 3 will reach 11 million by the end of this fiscal year, reports the AFP. The PS3 "is starting afresh as a console to play games with. Although pricing strategy is important, now we would like to put our strength in the number of software games," he said in an interview.Just recently, Hirai expressed his confidence in the 20GB and 60GB models of the PS3 which are still in stock, saying production of the two may resume if consumers ask for backwards compatibility. Sony also launched the biggest ad campaign ever to promote a hardware platform and focused on the console's explosive titles, so it's easy to imagine the PS3's sales rising.
Hirai also said he wants Sony's game division to "escape as soon as possible from the red and return to the black in fiscal year 2008." It's no secret that more PS3 units have been flying off shelves since the launch of 40GB SKUs, and analysts believe Sony is past the worst. Looks like time will tell if the SCE chief executive's forecast is on the money.

11 million? how many has it sold so far? i guess they can be optimistic. wii wont be selling much since people cant get one and 360 seems pretty settled. i think the world would be surprised if this were true.
11 million or more easily, probably 20 million by march.
am i confused or something. i though the wii broke world records at 14 million. how is the ps3 going to sell so many in such a short time?
The PS3 has sold a little over 7 million unit's so far, and back during the summer it had only sold just over 3.5 million unit's so I don't think Kaz is 'just being optimistic' I think there prediction of 11 million is right on the money, or if not that then at least 12-13 million.
Um... I don't think Kaz realizes that the end of 07 is in like 2 weeks
A companies fiscal year usually ends in February or March.
StickyGears is absolutely correct. Sony's fiscal year ends on March 31st. Gotta read those details. It would definitely be impossible for them to achieve that number in two weeks, but by the end of March? Absolutely, what with Devil May Cry 4, Army of Two, Alone in the Dark, Haze, LittleBigPlanet , and big anticipation for MGS4.
Um... I don't think TheRaiderNation realizes that the end of 07 isn't the end of Sony's fiscal XD
correct me if I am wrong... but didn't Fiscal Year 07 end in September(at least in the US)? I am not sure what Sony's Fiscal year is like.
Is different for different companies. I think you're looking at the US Government's fiscal year, because that does end at the end of September. Most end at the end of the actual year, some at the end of January, some at February, but Sony is at the end of March. That's just how it works. The companies are forced to give out fiscal reports once a year, but they don't say when, but I think Sony believes that is once everything begins to settle down after the December Christmas rush, the January with its returns, and February when most of the taxes are taken care of by its employees (I assume).
This is interesting, no one is angrily flaming anyone.
with so much peripherals available (mini-USB, bluetooth charge, usb memorystick, external HDD, keyboad, mouse) i think it wud be convienient 4 the consumer.
MS and SD slots shud also be there.
However, out of 7 ppl i kno, 4 of them still brought 40 gig thanks to price. Kudos 4 sony with the 40 gig.
It is quite nice to see everyone playing nice for once. Now..I wonder how long it will last?
I mean yeah given how after this holiday the PS3 will have many choices in games. Also the games coming out in the first three months are some killer apps. And some other games that is under the radar. IE there is some games getting over shadowed because of the big killer apps like DMC4, MGS4, GTA4. I mean there is second party games and 1st party games probably under raps and that could definitely spike sales. My best guess the PS3 could hit 14 million Before MGS4 and that could help even better sales. The PS3 is in a good spot to come back and do damage next year.
And i know the PS3 will get out of the red and into the black zone.
You know, I used to be sceptical about the 40 GB version because it lacked the Card Readers, but the first time I saw just how easy it was to hook up your cell phone... or almost anything to the pS3 and you see it instantaniously on the menu, I realised I don't need a Card Reader on the PS3 any more than I need it on my PS. (A USB cable is quite enough)
So with that, I have to say the 40 GB version sounds very appealing.
It's just the lack of good games that keeps me away from it so far.
I always had plans to pick it up when some good games come out, and now it seems that ALL of them will be released in 2008. That will be quite a year for the PS3 I'm sure, and I'll probably get mine in Q2 2008.
I don't have a Wii or X360, but I'll heavily concider a Wii before Smash Brothers is released.
I meant to say "any more than I need it on my PC" >_>
Anyway, that number sounds very resonable by March 2007.
