Kaz Hirai on PS3: original price was just right |

SPOnG recently scored an exclusive interview with Sony's big boss Kazuo Hirai to talk about the company's current standing in the market. In the interview, Hirai talked about Sony's past and future stratagems and how it's holding up now in the console wars, particularly the ever debatably hefty price of the PlayStation 3.Sony seems to be sticking with their tried and tested strategy with the PS2. In its generation, the PS2 had to compete with the Dreamcast which had a head start; now the PS2 is still thriving in hardware and software sales. Hirai explains that the same can be said for the PS3:
The PS3 has been on the market less than a year in the US and Japan and, what is it, less than that in Europe? It's difficult right now to say who's where. [...] Clearly we've never started from a position of strength and we've always had to catch up with every generation of hardware that we've brought into the market.
And on that note the conversation continues to the pricing of the PS3. Hirai expressed that the original price of the PS3 - US$ 599 for the 60 GB version - was just right and the issue wasn't one of price but of supply. When the PS3 was first released, the market didn't have enough supplies to meet the demand in the US and Japanese markets.
Although this isn't a very encouraging comment if you're looking forward to a price cut, it's not to say that it won't happen; we won't know for sure until the holiday announcements come in. One thing we can anticipate in the future though:
We're very excited about this holiday season, moving into the new fiscal year. We'll have 200 titles worldwide, 120 of which will be available in the North American market. I almost wish the holiday season was here now so we can really get in there.

''I almost wish the holiday season was here now'' They are cooking something in secret for sure! You don't come with a line, like that, when you know you have only the games or applications, available or announce, right now. And it's true. they always play catch up. Saturn vs Playstation Dreamcast vs Playstation 2 Xbox 360 vs Playstation 3 What's happen 2 times always happen 3 times, :) (No Fanboys stupid joke please ....)
They really need something really special to have a good install base... the know they don't have the best line up of games... a good one for someones, a decent like people like me... but not one of the best... so they obviously are doing something for christmas, they will be arrogants... but not stupid.... if they fail this christmas... metal gear need to resurect them but I doubt it...kill zone and metal gear are near but not far either in dates... that will make a very good numbers and are selling consoles... so lets see...

He's smart just like Ken is, they never started any generation with strength. And while they do play catch up they always(because of the longevity of their systems) End up the winner. Its a shame how no one understand how brilliant Ken was, while they did struggle with every system they always pull through kinda like the DS and PSP right now, PSP is kicking DS apart in 2 weeks. Thanks to some good games and the new PSP. Just wait for KH Birth by Sleep, God of War Chains of Olympus and that DMC game for PSP(if it comes out) The PSP will be rolling. You know whats funny The PS3 right now is exactly like the Yankees in MLB. Everyone counted them out saying there dead, and yet they pull through and is in the Playoffs. The PS3 didn't have a great start(like Yankees) but The big hitters are coming and they will come back with vengeance.
He should be clear and say X number of true PS3 blu ray release games.
