Jun Takeuchi on Chris Redfield and Africa as setting for Resident Evil 5 |
Ó
According to Takeuchi, Capcom saw it fit to set Resident Evil 5 in Africa because it's considered the birthplace of humankind. What's more, Africa became a kind of common ground between the Capcom staff members who wanted to try something new and those who wanted to stick to the tried-and-true.
Takeuchi also talked a little bit about Chris Redfield. It seems that Capcom wanted to explore the character of the former S.T.A.R.S. officer in a more in-depth fashion. This is especially important because S.T.A.R.S. is now defunct and it's been years since we'd last heard from Chris.
Takeuchi also touched upon a variety of other topics, such as the interplay of light and shadow and weapons variations in Resident Evil 5. If you'd like more detailed information, just check out the translated video below:

RE1 was the scariest game I played. RE2 dropped off as well as Code Ver. RE4 was one of my favorite games, but it was more action then horror. The bright setting with deep shadow in RE5 plays more to a military combat game or Black Hawk Down survival mode. I wonder about the similiarity between the t-virus and the horror of AIDS here.
Point noted. It could also meant that we were getting used to RE as we went along, hence it became less scary for us. ^^
