With the release of firmware 1.6 for the PlayStation 3, along with it comes the Folding@Home software which many members of the gaming community have been waiting for. And yes, among those who have been looking forward to this potentially life-saving project is the QJ Team.

For those who are yet unfamiliar with the term, Folding@Home is a project which was started by researchers from Stanford University. The project involves the study of protein folding which has been thought to be the root of diseases such as AlzheimerÂ’s Disease, ParkinsonÂ’s Disease, Huntington's Disease, cystic fibrosis, and some types of cancer. The aim of the project is to help the researchers to build models and simulations of these proteins by lending them some CPU power and a bit of bandwidth.

Now that Sony has fully pitched in on this effort and is putting the power of the Cell processor to good use, gamers can now do their part by simply installing the Folding@Home software on their PS3s and letting the program run while the console is idle.

Well, we here at QJ are doing just that, but we would of course love some company from our readers. So, in order to turn this into a full community effort, we would like to invite all of our readers (or even if you're just passing by our site for the first time) to join the QJ.Net Folding@Home team.

It's fairly simple. Once you've launched the Folding@Home program, just press the triangle button to bring up the Options panel, select "Identity", and then select "Join an existing team". After that, just enter QJ.Net's team number and, voila! You're now a part of QJ.Net's Folding@Home team. Here's QJ's team number:

52781

There's nothing to lose while we have everything to gain as we help in the scientific effort to cure some of the diseases which many members of society have been or are currently suffering from. So, power up that PS3, download and install the software, join our team, then go make yourself a sandwich and proceed to feel good about yourself. Or you can just simply continue to sit in your living room, let the program run and watch that really nifty 3D background which shows the Earth in all its sparkly glory, AND feel good about yourself.

I'm going to join the QJ team just because I've been a long time reader/downloader from QJ, so if I were to join a folding team, it'd be from a website I know, like this or one of my forums, and since not many of my friends from forums have PS3s, I choose QJ.

if you add all the other OS current TFLOPS*, it equals less than what the PS3's are producing. If find that pretty cool. :)

» explanation plx

How exactly does lending them my ps3 power help ? seriously someone care to explain ? are they searching around on the internet for cures ??

This all just sounds like a waste of time because theres no explanation behind it other than people who join will be helping! helping how ? how can people who know nothing about it help ? how does ps3 power help find cures ?

they want people to just leave their ps3 on so they can benefiet while I sit bored wishing I could play game? what if they dont find ***** for the next 20 years ? I could have enjoyed playing games all that time instead I wasted my hard earned money and time so a bunch of college people can find cures with millions of ps3's ?

it just sounds like bull*****, if they dont have the doe to support such a project and not be able to buy their own super computer(s) then they should be cast aside, instead they want to be lazy and try to get millions of people who spent 600+ dollars to "donate" their equipment to help a bunch of college people who have a hunch they can find cures by adopting ps3 power ?

wtf wtf wtf wtf...seriously wtf..until someone enlightens my dumbass about this incase I have the wrong view then i'll join.

The "doe"? Anyway it's a university study. Those types of things always require grants and public contributions. Instead of leaving a dollar in a jar people are running this on their ps3.

Have you read the description of the program that pops up when you click on the icon? It explains how you will be "helping".

By the way, where are these super-disease curing-computers everyone should have. It's not that easy, Dumbass. That's why there is no cure for the disease already. That is why you do research. That is why you ask for help.

There you have it, Dumbass. If it still doesn't make sense to you, DON"T DO IT.

I hope that helped, Dumbass.

» you fail @ life

oh well I dont care about cures cause by time they even get close to finding one i'll be dead and so will millions of other people.

I'll enjoy my time playing the damn game instead of leaving the thing on all day for hopes and dreams, if theirs gonna be a cure it's not gonna come out of this. if they made it where it could run in the background then I'd be okay with but the only reason I turn my ps3 on is to play the fkn thing and when I'm done..OFF I dont see the logic and leaving a ps3 on for such a short period of time and how much that can actually help.

they dont tell you enough, they dont give you the details so this project = fail, what a waste of an update just so I can help some demon get his cure ? people who have cancer are demons and deserve to be shot and pissed on in their graves, their worthless and a bunch of *****'s hat cant help themselfs and expect other people to do everything for them and find them cures...GO FIND YOUR OWN FKN CURES YOU DEMONS

I thought this was a great idea, using ps3's to help Stanford do research, until I used it, that is. I installed it this morning and let it run for a bit so i could see what it did and look that the Gui it had. I then turned it off so i could play some Godfather, after I tired of that, I decided to put F@H back on while I surfed the internet, 20 -30 minutes later i turn around to see the graphic frozen w/ blue and red hatches on the screen, i assumed the ps3 froze, for some odd reason, so i turned it off and tried to re-boot, only there would be no video. Lights came on, but no video to be found, tried it on the A/V cables that came with it, no go. I tried it w/ another TV, no go. My TV will still operate the ps2 just fine, so i doubt its the TV. F^#K you Folding@HOME you bricked my ps3.
