John Koller: We're bullish on sales this holiday, can't answer about gaming being recession-proof

Wake up, Santa. We want that PS3 price cut! - Image 1Everyone is feeling the crunch of the spiraling economy, and everybody's tightening their belts just a little bit more, especially this holidays. But what does corporate giant Sony feel about all this, particularly in their gaming department?

Asked by MTV Multiplayer's Patrick Klepek, John Koller, head of hardware marketing for SCEA, responds:

Good question, given the reality of how things are from a macro perspective. First off, I want to say that we're very bullish on sales for this holiday season and beyond. In fact, we're very excited about the numbers we've been seeing coming in. There's a lot of talk about whether gaming is recession proof. I'm not sure I can answer that. I can say the PS3 is selling extremely well. Maybe those rumors about people forgoing vacations for gaming might be coming true a little bit here.

Actually, if I might just say. People are not forgoing vacations for gaming. They're forgoing vacations because they don't have money to burn.

Anyway, maybe if they give us that long-awaited price cut for the PS3, sales will be even better this season? Last week's NPD results show the PS3 trailing behind the Wii, DS, Xbox 360 and even it's own little bro, the PSP, in hardware sales.

I think the PS3 is going to win next year in sales because it will drop it's price next year for sure. This year ts was good for them but still not great. With K2, the real GoW, hopefully Heavy Rain, FF13 and Versus and more releases next year, PS3 can be recognized. There isn't anymore games that I want till K2 comes out in Feb. But so three whole months to save up for that HD TV ;D

you (or anyone else) think Versus XIII is coming out next year, you're mad. That game will be out in 2010 and you can quote me on that. FFXIII won't hit Japan until Q3 next year.

there's a new emerging segment in the gaming industry: "Grampa Gamers." 50+ gamers...the males are focusing on WWII games and shooters, and the females are focusing on Sim-type and puzzle games. They don't buy new though...we might see sales go down and profits go up.
