I don't think there EVER has been any game that had swapped discs on every other "level". (Who says level? LOL, little kids?) I don't WANT my HD-DVD drive as my primary drive, (And ABSOLUTELY NOT BLU-RAY as my primary) the whole reason is that I rather take an in-expensive drive and use it for games (DVD) and if that goes out, I am not out of a HD-DVD player. (Wear-and-tare) So I mean, meh, Your post just seems like a flame war just to start, better get your flame proof suit on.

That engine sounds pretty amazing, and just shows how much data really can fit on one DVD.
They will no doubt license this out, so I'm interested in what kind of games will adopt this.
It does really sound amazing from an artists perspective....being able to work 2kX2k opposed to something like 256X256 or most are 512X512 now, is like 5 extra levels of detail you can put into textures.
However, giving artists that leeway means we may spend a whole day doing a photo realistic texture for one wall....although it looks good, like he said, it may not be the best use of time...

Because although they have the same amount of ram on paper, the PS3 XMB actually uses twice as much memory as the 360 dashboard (and before some optimizations it had used 3 times as much)....and there may be even more things eating resources we don't know about....
So blow it out your ass buddy, and get informed...

However the magic is finding a way to compress textures, then decompress them and show them on screen, which is what this engine does.
Carmack has found an incredible way of doing it....but the guy has been eating and breathing programming all his life, and is directly involved....not just cracking whips.
As far as texture sizes go, think of it as having a piece of paper of different sizes.
If you give an artist a regular piece of paper, they can do some nice stuff with it....but if they were to draw the same picture on a piece of paper 4ftX6ft they can fit ALOT more detail into the picture....that's what this engine let's artists do...use paper as big as they want....

He didnt rate the game dude. He was saying that a proffesional game magazine with actual critices who have a scale for which they use on all games (not all magazines use the same scale, hence some games could get a 3 on one magazine and a 6 on another). I have read some reviews and seen some scores that the game 'lair' received and yes, some magazines did give it a 5.5 and if your not happy with the fact that this is getting to be the average score for the game, then post a link to a review greater then a 5.5 (which there are btw, just go look). I think the highest score I saw for the game was a 7.2... which does make the game look meak and underwhelming.
Granted, you should always play the game before you take the scores into consideration but from a larger stand point, low scores in game magazines always hurt sales for games. So hence, Lair probably wont do all that great unless the consense of gamers agree that the game is great and that the reviewers were just approaching the game wrong (remember Syphon Filter for PS1 got like a 2 but people loved it so much they had to actually retract the score and review it all over again.. i forget which magazine this was but they were giving it a 2 based on shiety graphics and glitches).
John Carmack is the man, i can listen to this guy talk for centuries.. and he isnt singling out the PS3. Well, except for the part where he says its pretty much taking a longer time to develop for it which is nothing new.

READ the following;
http://www.innerbits.com/blog/2007/05/09/ps3-memory-footprint/
Hence PS3 has LESS memory available for games compared to the 360 (which has been a problem for many devs when porting from 360 to PS3).

Agreed.
Anyone who thinks JC is bashing the PS3 here are only showing their ignorance.

That's probably the saddest comment I've ever heard from a xbox fanboy. If you seriously think Halo is more valuable than all the first party titles that Sony produces, you should seek help.
I don't even know where this hostility came from. 8 bit generation, 16 bit generation, 32/64 bit generation, last gen...there wasn't even a hint of this "zomg, your system sux... for life!"
I think it's just alot of the 360 fanboys trying to drag out their system knowing that within a year or two, Microsoft is going to be releasing the next gen xbox. Don't be a fanboy, get whatever system floats your boat and be happy.

This console generation is barely beginning and x360 games are already needing 2 discs (only for textures!, how about sound and other goodies?). It's not so difficult to imagine how many disc will be needed in 3 years. Well, maybe in that moment MS drops x360 and comes with something new :(

That was quite informative

Also, the HDD helps with performance in the PS3 for caching (which can ALSO be done on the 360, Oblivion being the most known example which uses the 360's HDD for caching if it's there), but mostly the HDD is simply used to reduce load times (i.e. dumping 4-5GB of data from Blu-ray onto the HDD). It does not componsate for having less memory, since every screenshot you see in a game was produced by data held in memory at the time. The more memory you have, the more you can achieve per frame. Streaming helps with obtaining larger game worlds whilst maintaining decent texture quality.

Take a break? Nah! They're going to put in the Blu-ray disk and play the game through to the end, therefore changing a disk is way too much ask. ;)

There was abit of argueing last gen, but xbox was clearly the more powerful system and showed it hands down in it's games...so it didn't last for long.
The gens before, I guess maybe the internet wasn't so widespread (or in 8bit early 16bit case, not around) and people had no "forum" to argue on....but there was abit around the schoolyard for the hardcore nintendo vs sega freaks.
This time around, I think it's because the systems are so close and you can really argue one way or the other if you want....and then of course the proliferation of the internet allows for so much annonymous sh*t talking....
Or maybe it's PS3 owners that know they bought an overhyped machine and deep down know it's not all that great and maybe they should have went with the competitor...
