Japan's PS3 Network now online *2nd update* |

Ó
That's right folks, Sony's PlayStation Network is already up and running with some of the basic goodies you can expect from a new online site of fun and gaming happiness! Now, it's in Japanese, so our translations might not be complete just yet, but they should be pretty good representations of what to expect if, for some reason, you own a Japanese PS3 and want to get some freebies or download some new games.
A bit of digging reveals that you can now sign up for the basic chat services for your PS3, which includes making your account, adding, removing, and blocking friends, and file transfers. As for how much you're allowed to transfer, we've yet to figure out, but that should be an interesting thing to use. It also seems they've got a voice chat up already, though there might not be any English-speaking people there at the moment.
The online store is now up as well! The store carries an assortment of goodies beyond your usual picture packs and such for users to pick up through their console.
For gamers everywhere, the most important thing to hear about are the games themselves, and you'll be happy (or jealous) to know that there are demos out for various games already. To list the ones you might be quite interested in, Ridge Racer 7 has a demo out now, as well as the thesis-turned-product flOw. They've also got demos for Blast Factor, Mainichi Issho, Kazuo, Puzzle, and Lemmings.
Even more exciting is the Archive section, and we didn't need a translation to figure out what prime piece of gaming history they were shelling out: Biohazard Director's Cut! Ten games ready for download, so it's absolutely envy-inspiring.
So... what do you think? It looks like the PS3's party is starting out pretty well, even if they didn't have a lot of units out for sale.
Update: To answer a question posed by Milo22, the reason why it says "PSP" at the page for the Archives is because you can use your PS3 to download the PS1 game and then send it to your PSP to play on the emulation system there. Thing is, there isn't an actual PS1 emulator out there for the PSP as of yet, unless you count game ports.
Here's the kicker. Remember what Pranav said about 3.0 firmware for the PSP and PlayStation One game emulation? Somehow, the speculation about the new firmware for the PSP and PS3 being intertwined with the promise of PS1 emulation seems a lot more plausible. How that might affect homebrew will also be of concern, but if you don't own a PSP, then Sony could clean house with sales of both handheld and console for the purpose of emulation.
If you want to go back and play older titles, that is.
Update: Well, we all requested for a better translation, that's exactly what we got. Just to prove how great the community we have here is, Rami Yousif just gave us a clearer translation of the source (although he did say it could be inaccurate). And from what he's given us, it seems we've had a couple of cool info missed.
We did mention something about the voice chat, but we're now told (by Rami) that the video chat can also be enjoyed by the the oh-so-lucky PS3 first dibsters. This feature can be used provided that the one you're trying to establish "connection" with is already included in your friends list.
Some details on the Online Gaming also surfaced, users can now "search for opponents (matching), communicate with others (lobby), can view scores and achievements (ranking), and purchase items. etc from the in game store." Rami also notes that Sony currently has some games described in its network. Ridge Racer 7, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Genji all have games rating, price, genre, short description, and available downloadable contents under their slate.
For the PlayStation Store, our good friend also labored hard to get things figured out for us. According to him, the area gives info on "sale offers, additional information, and game content can be downloaded (demos, items, pictures, videos etc)." Lastly, if there are available demos for any of the games, a notification will be displayed beside each game.
And for our PSPanatics, he enumerated the available PS1 downloads for now:
- Resident Evil: Director's Cut,
- *can't translate first part* MSX collection Vol. 1
- *can't translate first part* MSX collection Vol. 2,
- *can't translate this game*
- Jump Flash!
- Hot Shot Golf 2
- Silent Bomber
- Iron Fist 2
- *A bunch o' others I can't translate*.
