Japanese retailers slash PS3 prices |

The Akibablog reports that in Japan, console sales for the PS3 have slowed significantly. (Kotaku would say not cooled, more like frozen, but people would start flaming here so we won't say that.) It seems that gamers have decided to wait for the prices to either drop, or for actual games to come out.
The Akibablog says that the retailers are reportedly slicing 20 percent off the 20GB PS3. The 20GB version originally books at ¥49,980 (US$ 412) but it is now being offered for ¥39,980 (US$ 329) in a sale that should end in February. Kotaku reports that popular reasoning for not buying a PS3 in online message boards, say for example 2chan, range from "there are no games I want" to "video stores don't rent Blu-ray movies."
If you recall the first few weeks after the PS2 launch, despite the lack of a solid library of games, the console still sold well in Japan due to the DVD player.
To balance things out (it's getting a bit too anti-PS3 here) we do have to note that some have pointed out that this essentially is a promotion from Don Quijote (the retailer) and they only had a few quantities. A commenter at Kotaku notes that they also had the deal at the Shibuya store but both stores were sold out of the promotional 20GB deal before it we even got to either store.

I think Sony just needs to suck it down and basically "give away" the blu-ray drive in the system to approach the price of the '360. Unless they can decisively prove that they can provide superior visuals they won't be able to charge 50% more and expect to stay competitive in the gaming market.

Anyways, Xbox360 and even PS2, still went through the same drought. 2007 is the year for true next-gen games, and many AAA titles are coming out for Xbox360 and PS3. They probably already know that, and so they're waiting for the game they're looking forward to before buying a PS3.
everyone seems to miss the little detai, when bringing up the 360 launch, and the PS2 launch, is that the 360 had 600,000 units available by the end of 2005, *WORLDWIDE*, and the Playstation 2 had roughly the same with about 500,000. THERE WERE NO OTHER SHIPMENTS OF THE PLAYSTATION 2 OR THE X BOX 360 UNTIL, AT THE EARLIEST, MARCH OR APRIL OF THE FOLLOWING YEAR.
the Playstation 3 had, in the US alone, 1 MILLION UNITS SHIPPED TO RETAILERS. In Japan, about 500,000. that's about 1 million units MORE than what the PS2 and 360 had during this same time frame, and the PS2 had worst games.
also, THE CONSOLE HASN'T EVEN *LAUNCHED* IN THE UK YET!
jesus christ, people, it's only been two months. the PS2 didn't get any quality games until the March after it launched (a full six months later). give the PS3 some time.
the console is costly, yes, but that will go down eventually, and there are some AAA titles launching this year, that will boost sales.
i wholeheartedly agree that there aren't enough games (Resistance is truly a great game, however), but that's going to change.
i remember when the PS2 lauched, and i was an impatient 21 year old, eagerly awaiting games like Devil May Cry and Metal Gear Solid 2, now here i am, 27 years old, eagerly awaiting the release of Devil May Cry 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4, as well as some nice first party titles, but the little thing i learned along the way was PATIENCE. it goes a long way.
you've seen the stories. you've read the reviews with developers. you know the games are coming, so why must everyone across the net perpetually beat this "the PS3/PSP has not games!" horse to death?

i'm buying a PS3 next week (granted my Best Buy has any. i went to two today, and they were sold out). i know that there isn't much to play at the moment, and i'm alright with that. the titles are coming, and Resistance, as well as GTHD and some demos are good enough to tide me over. i also have a plethora of PS2 games to play (on my PS2, of course), to tide me over while i wait for more PS3 goodness (FFXII is calling my name, even as i type this).

Theres still alot of games that will be on the PS3 and not the Xbox360. Not to mention the PS2 had better games then the Xbox and the reason why it sold over 100 million and the Xbox360 didnt even break 30 million.
Since the Xbox360 sales are doing worse then the original Xbox, it seems less people find it worth buying. While the PS3 is selling better then the PS2. So analyze that. If the Xbox360 was so worth buying, then people would have bought it already.

The usual list of games!!! They MIGHT be good you just dont know they also MIGHT be total rubbish.
The 360 has a very large amount of excellent games and most have good multiplayer replay value the PS3 has hardly any games and not a very good online experience it withers and dies compared to XBL, (multi tasking anyone).
Comparing the PS2 with the original xbox1 sales! you also forget that the xbox1 was a whole new console that got M$ exactly where they needed to be now THE BEST SELLING NEXT GEN CONSOLE.
Since the 360 costs almost treble the amount of the xbox1 of course its gonna take longer to kill off the old consoles and the 360 is a whole lot cheaper than the PS3 and is selling a lot better to.
The 360 sales are going great even if you try and convince people otherwise the HUGE amounts of software it is selling speaks for itself which it dont look like the PS3 is doing now does it.
So analyze why the 360 DID NOT drop its price over Christmas (M$ know they have a winner and it is making a profit) but now it looks as though the PS3 is going to have to drop its price so that blows your its selling better than the 360 blah blah out of the water.
Its looking like pushing the Blu Ray drive more than the console and the price point has made this machine appeal more to film buffs than gamers yet more bad news huh.

Good to see Gears of war is selling out in Japan now though eh!.
The PS3 already should have some good games. Most games started development the same time as the XBOX 360's recently released games. There is no guarantee these current exclusives will be that great as I've been hearing a lot otherwise lately. It seems developers are having a miserable time getting the games to perform with all the features originally anounced. The games that are out now have worse graphics, framerate issues, and are simply mediocre.
The fate of the PS3 rests on the quality of these exclusives, and if they remain exclusive. I can't wait! I wouldn't be too optimistic.
I've bought a PS3 because of the list of games. As for the 360, Its list isnt as impressive. My current list for PS3 contains 38 titles due out in 2007 alone. AND three games coming out in the next two months and a whole lot more in late march and april.
Finland: PS3 20Gb = 550€
Japan: PS3 20GB = 329$ = 254€!!!

you defend the ps3 using titles that have 4's or 5's behind them that may or may not ever come out. when 360 fans talk about blue dragon it has atleast been released in japan.

360 went through no such "drought".
Ps2 went through the drought because there were NO good games until a year later when Grand Turismo came out.
The REASON the 360 had only about 600,000+ units sold at the END of 2005, was BECAUSE NO ONE COULD FIND ONE..... THEY WERE ALL SOLD OUT. THEY DIDNT EVEN HAVE ENOUGH UNITS TO FILL PREORDERS UNTIL FEB 2006. AND THE UNIT DROUGHT DIDNT END UNTIL MARCH 2006.
PS3 on the other hand is NOT having teh SAME drought, anyone can walk into almost any store and pick one up... right after Xmas even. The 360s were much much much harder to find and buy. Wheres theres Ps3 sitting on shelves. You CANNOT compare the two, as they sold their units at the end of the holiday season for 2 completly different reasons.
Go easy on him, he suffers from PS3 superiority dilusional psychosis disorder. If you tell him the games coming out are nothing special he will deny it and continue to well after they are given disappointing ratings and sales plumet. Medication and extensive psychotherapy will be needed to cure this guy.
I would say you could import one through Lik Sang for much cheaper, but $ony took care of that company because they care about gamers. All they did was sell sony's own Japanese PSPs to other countries, eliminating sony's price gouging. Do yourself a favor and buy a 360 or Wii.
you know the answer to 'why did microsoft not drop the price of xbox360 over christmas?' is probably because of ps3's high price....
if you think about it the 360 looked cheaper due to the ps3 coming out at a higher price point, so if the ps3 hadn't come out they may have had to battle for people's cash, but as it is those who 'had' to get a next gen system opted for the cheaper one.

I live in Japan too (In Niigata North Japan) and whilst PS3 sales may have slowed in the big 2 cities, here in the countryside things couldnt be more different. You can hardly buy them anywhere, I can only think of 1 shop that still has one or two.
The problem with those blogs is that they only cover the 2 main cites.
We GAME more than the robot drones of the city.
Do more reseach, and dont just go to your main store and take one picture, you jerk offs. Kotaku dosen't know ***** about Japanese gaming.

Both are great consoles. PS3 has the best graphics. 360 has the best multiplayer and shooters. Wii has the best gameplay. Their all great consoles. It all depends on your budget and what kind of games you are looking for. I personally own a 360 and a Wii. I'll probably get a PS3 too, once (if) the price goes down less than $450
