Japanese flies to Korea for PS3 fix; Sony halts supply

Sony has halted the supply of the PS3 in Korea. Say what??? What's gotten into them? "Troubled by 'reverse-importing'," they are, it seems. Apparently, Japanese foreigners have been flying to South Korea in order to get the console at a cheaper price point. Koreans aren't too happy about that.

The Korean 80GB PS3 sells for 448,000 Won (about US$ 325.00). Looks like they would like to keep their PS3s to themselves. The Japanese would rather have their share, nonetheless, given the much lower price that the PS3 goes for.

The units, however, differ in voltage. The South Korean PS3 is at 220/380 while the ones for Japan have 100/200. It's not much trouble, though, cos a converter would be a quickfix for it.

» big deal

Well plane tickets aren't cheap. Maybe this will help S. Korea economy. If the S. Korean's companies were selling it online and shipping it outside the country then I can see a trade problems/ issues there.

» but

more of a problem for the japan branch of sony then for Korea's econimy.

Am I the only person who doesn't really get the point? I get that there are people buying Korean PS3's, and there is a slight price difference, but wouldn't that slight price difference be compensated for when you have to buy the power converter? And if this is such a problem for Sony, and they are so pissed about it, why don't they release an "Official" power converter to try and capitalize on the sales opportunity created by this?

And since someone will eventually say it, "dis wuldnt b a prblm if sony wuld price cutt!"

the problem is that Sony is loosing money on every console. But the cheap price in S. Korea makes them loose even more money. Sony rather wants that Japanese people buy their PS3's in Japan at a higher price.

» Do not want!

What the heck? Ok time to break it down, price from Tokyo, Japan to Seoul, S. Korea= 500+ USD. On my last trip to Japan (Aug 08) the Playstation 3 was selling for ¥35,600 so your talking about a $35 difference for the S. Korean PS3.

Round trip to S. Korea- $500

Price for Korean PS3- $325

Total- $825

So where are the savings?

» Correction

Just found a flight from Tokyo to Seoul for $272. Still expensive for a "cheaper" PS3

» I remember reading...

that the Koreans were getting a different version of the PS3...perhaps, different + superior.

» BUT!

It doesn't mean they go to Korea only to get the PS3. I could go on a vacation and buy a ps3 while I was there. Not to mention I'd buy cheap PS3's for my friends back in Japan.

Maybe they're doing it in bulk, one person flies down to pick up three units for him and his buddies

» Sorry Silver

$35 is not that much money. Unless they can show some measureable numbers, how can they expect people to just accept this? I cant imagine that it is really that much of a problem.

» it is very logical that...

the Korean 80 which was announced before the Euro version....back when there was a 60 and 20 could still have software emulated BC. This would be more than enough reason to get a Korean 80.

» point is

a lot of japanese traders does buys truckloads of ps3 from their korean partners and ships em cheaply to japan. this is the stem of the trading biz that sony is avoiding coz they lose money in the process.

35 dollars times truckloads of ps3 equal a lot of money.

these japanese traders usually sells those ps3 on japanese online stores.

» rofl

they are doing it in shiploads!!!

and nobody flies, they just call their korean business partners through skype and presto thousands of korean ps3 units were sent to japan via pirate ship. lol

by xche78x - 2009-03-24 21:36
» they also call their chinese biz partners for these

10 bucks a pop in bulk order of 1000 pcs.

Right now the PS3 is losing about $50 USD per console sold. Add to the amount this console is being marketed, they're losing like 90 USD per console. That's a big difference and something needs to stop in order for them to break even in PS3 sales, turn profit and get a price cut. Which is the reason why PS3 hasn't gotten one in awhile.
