Japanese developers to focus on Wii over PS3

According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, the game just isn't going "Sony's way" this time around. Publishers, analysts and even PlayStation 2 gamers have claimed that there's something just not right about the PlayStation 3, and it clearly takes form in it being in last place.

Supposedly being Sony's successor to the still popular PS2, the PlayStation 3 still has a lot of ground to cover: it has to beat the PS2's still growing sales point, overtake Microsoft's early bird Xbox 360, and divert developer attention from the lower priced and mass-market appealing Nintendo Wii.

Top of the news report however, is the fact that Japanese developers are looking down on the PlayStation 3. Kyoshi Shin of the International Game Developers Association in Japan mentioned that many developers were now focusing on developing for the Wii, since it has higher probability of selling to more customers, provided its humongous user base.

"When people talk about the PS3 on chat forums, they say it's like going to a very expensive restaurant and not getting anything to eat," Shin said. The temperamental Eastern sentiment is shared by the Japanese chapter of the IGDA, although no one is ruling out the possibility that the PlayStation 3 can still win.

Analysts have stated time and time again that Sony needs to place short term changes in their strategy to augment their long term performance. Since the PlayStation 3 has a lifetime of 10 years, the console should beat the competition by half that time - about the same time Microsoft and Nintendo put out their new consoles for the next five-year generation.

"It's clear Sony is struggling with PS3 sales. The key question is: how is Sony going to persuade those 100 million PS2 owners to buy the PS3?" said Geoff Keighley, editor of GameSlice. The major sentiment is that Sony boost the console's immediate value by dropping the price point to manageable standards. In short, they suggest a price cut.

According to sources, Sony already loses money on every PlayStation 3 sold, so it wouldn't hurt for Sony to lose a little bit more to immediately distribute its console to install a larger hardware base than the competition. This is Sony's primary strategy after all: "lose money or break even selling consoles but make loads of cash selling games." Question is, when will they start?

the wii is like the macarena... people like it for ten minutes... and then afterwards are even ashamed to admit in public that they liked it...

even the casual pips who liked the wii and had some initial laughs has it collecting dust in their house...

if developers want to aim for the "long term" they need to maximize the PS3.

I don't blame developers, the spiralling development costs of the 360 and PS3 are quite a bit more than on the Wii.

On the Wii you can get away with very simple games, which are made fun just by the control scheme, and will sell due to the differences in demographics.

So called hardcore gamers have to realise they are in the minority by a mile now.

People are not ashamed. The ones that are, are the fanboys that played the nintendo wii and and saw how fun it actually was. And i agree with you that it doesn't last long but that is due to the lack of games which will clear up eventually.

i agree with you there...

but developers also show study the said demographic that the wii appeals to... most the the casual people don't really by that many games... sometimes the life of the console will be finish but these people has bought only two games the entire time... i know countless people who only has one game on their PS2 and they couldn't care less...

for the wii people don't but all the party games out there... they have one or two or five and then they are set for life... they don't go for the "complicated" games... and how many serious gamers would prefer to play these games on the wii??? they would rather have a go with it on the 360 or PS3 unless it's exclusive... and if it is exclusive on the wii what percentage of that install base are actual gamers??? cause only that percentage will be their market not the entire wii pie.

if they release a good game on the wii, most of wii owners wouldn't even know about this game even if it's a famous franchise and they couldn't care less... they are having fun with their current games which will last them for a couple of years..

but release a good game on the PS3... let's see what percentage of PS3 owners buy that game!!!!! man, gamers buy games... that's what they do!!! i've bought sports games year after year even when the only noticeable change is the roster!!!

they are just fulling themselves in thinking the the wii market is this whole pie which they can continuously bite away at... i've got a wii cause people like it... i've got three games and i don't think i'll be buying more and i know i'm not the only one, not by a long shot...

I'm in a fortunate position to own 2 consoles. Wii and PS3. And both have their good and bad points.

However, I think the Wii is a bit of a 'one trick pony'. It isn't especially accurate when you swing your wiimote (take Tiger Woods for example). Having said that, the PS3 is a bit steep for the price of a Games console, but you have to consider it's ability as a DVD Blueray player (with the remote, rather than the joypad).

In my book the PS3 edges past the Wii. I'm no hard-core gamer. I'm a family man with 2 kids and yet the Wii is not switched on half the amount of time that the PS3 is and I only have 2 retail games for the PS3 compared to 7 for the Wii.

Still, I think Sony is having a hard time bcause they are trying to force the public into using their technology the way that Sony wants them to use it. Er, PSP and UMD Movies anyone?

History tells us that is not always the way. If Sony was to remain open and be seen to support their customers in the ways that their customers want to use their products, it would do them the world of good. I know their are the issues of copyright and piracy and I'm not condoning such areas as copyright theft and piracy. But there are means and ways to try to overcome such issues. You will never eradicate it completely, but Sony should should not be seen as targetting their customers whilst tackling such issues.

By taking the correct approach, Sony could easily turn this all around and be back on top.

I'm not bashing Nintendo or Sony, I'm a supporter of both.

So no "hardcore" games exist for any system weaker than the Wii ? You really think that with the mass of jap support, the Wii won't get "hardcore" titles ? And shove that macarena ***** up your ass, PS3 will be the "macarena" of consoles 10 years down the road when MS and Nintendo release (I'm guessing) way more powerful systems. Of course, if sony decided to remove their heads from their asses, PS3 would be cheaper, have way more jap support and be #1 right now.

I'd say one of the most obvious reasons why devs would make games for the wii is because its so much cheaper! The wii isn't, and shouldn't be considered next gen, so devs don't have to work as hard to make a game that will run well on the wii's hardware. Also, they can port ps2 games and sell them off as next gen. Really, its a good strategy for the short term, but I believe that this will hurt the quality of games in the longrun.

Get to the real facts, The PS3 is failing in its former stronghold of Japan.

It has NO games in the top 50 Japanese chart and the hardware sales are as follows -

PS3 weekly sales - 14,819

Nintendo Wii weekly sales - 101,254

And this weeks software sales -

Nintendo Wii - 325,619

Xbox 360 - 13,945

PS3 - 10,412

There are the real reasons why they are going to the Wii and in Europe there are huge amounts of people waiting for the Wii to become widely available you just cant find them.

Mark my words, PS3 will destroy Wii in the long run even in Japan. Nobody takes into account factors like brand loyalty, first party lineup, third party lineup (FFXIII will NEVER be in Wii nor MGS4, nor BioHazard V*), infinitely more powerful, and future proof, hardware. Everybody can see ninty titles dominating week after week the top ten spots but none looks into what matter most, the top most expected games for Japaneses gamers, almost all belong to PS.

It's pretty funny, many Ninty kids were celebrating the "dead" of PSP but now we see how 2007 will be a wonderful year for the Sony handheld, FFVII:Crisis Core anyone, God of War?, plus a bunch other titles will push PSP sales to the sky.

*This is not a PS exclusive but xbox is dead in Japan. With BioHazard we see how the graphic weakness of Wii is striking back, CAPCOM simply couldn't do a decent Wii port of BioHazard V.

As a Wii owner and having lots of friends who have the wii, I have noticed a growing trend between us all.

The Wii is the most anticipated console of the three due to its innovation in the gaming market. But an innovation can only last a while until it gets boring and something you just live with when gaming (e.g rumble).

It is because of this that the Wii will sell millions to gamers who want to try it first hand, but the lack of 'real' (i use the term real loosly) games shows that this 'fad' will soon die down just as many other fads did.

It because of this that the Wii may face major trade-in's and such due to the fact it cannot grasp an over 15+ year old's attention for more than a few hours. Unlike the 360 and the PS3 which are multimedia, the Wii unforutnatly is not, and motion will only grasp peoples attention for a while, as I and many people I know who have a wii know personally.

The Wii will have no room on the gaming market, in the next few years, and will be more focused of children and non-gamers, whereas most gamers will go for the main option and get some power under the hood.

Wow I can't believe other people feel the same way I do. I also feel that the Wii, while interesting, is only made for short term impact... Right now everyone wants one, while its still fresh and gimmicky, but once the novelty wears off people are going to trade up. At least Nintendo is making tons of money out of the people who bought Wii's and will continue to do so for a period of time. Meanwhile, I'll be getting a PS3 cos I'm gonna be in for the long haul, and I have faith that long term the PS3 is going to develop into something wonderful.

I wouldn't say that people are ashamed. What's there to be shameful about for liking something that seems fresh. And I agree with you that more games would help the Wii feel fresh (and more devs wanting to work for cheap on the Wii can only help the Wii)...

Even then, I feel that the Wii won't have lasting appeal because people are going to get used to the motion control business... At which time - MS and Sony will probably come out with some peripheral to cash in on a new fad or something like that (case in point for last gen - Eyetoy)

I agree with getting a new advertising team. Sony needs to explain all that the PS3 and PSP can do. They need to say that PS3 is linux OS/ Web browser/ movie player/ stereo/ game console rolled into one($600 computer). The PSP is a mp3 player/ movie player/ mobile game device (the new Walkman). Alot of adults think they are JUST GAMING CONSOLES and go for the cheaper ones(DS + Wii). Sony need to set them straight. They need to explain what they are getting for that price.

Nintendo itself isn't very hardcore, wii or not. The only games that Nintendo's systems have that cater to true competitive play are the Smash series and Pokemon. In reality, most highly competitive titles aren't fun initially and go against Nintendo's "fun" mindset. The blame needs to be thrown elsewhere.

is still just gettin in the water per say....Let think back to when the 360 launched it was goin thur the same thing 400 price tag was heavy to alot of ppl and nobody wanted a core system cuz it was pointless.The games were bad wat was you playin till gears of war came out ...Call of duty 2 and Graw everything else was lame but now it sells.With more titles coming along im pretty sure sells will pick up we have just wat now resisteince and ridge racer 7 everything else isnt soo good and the bad ubisoft ports have to stop.When the ps3 gets its "Gears of war" i guess you could say youll see a diff.As for the wii if fun for a week im one of the ppl who got one to try it out then ebayed it for 650 cuz its flair just wore off no one rele wants to wave a remote while playin a game let nintendo have their trend cuz thats all it is a trend

I'm not interested in boring, simple, old gen wii games. Nothing can replace Playstation 3 and the games that are coming for it. So what if Ps3 at the moment doesn't have many great games. by the end of the year things will definitely change. I'm tired of playing super mario bros and zelda.
