After issuing an official statement, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe">SCEE may expect another problem for themselves as the delay of the PS3 in PAL territories will definitely put another dent in Sony's stock. According to James Hong, Head of Equity Derivatives Trading at Dresdner Kleinwort in Tokyo, Sony's stock fell 50 yen(about 1%) to 5,050 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. This setback is the latest after Sony suffered a major overhauling in its electronics operation to catch up in key electronics products such as MP3 digital music players. Lest we forget, Dell Inc. and Apple Computer Inc issued huge recalls of their defective laptop batteries made by one of Sony's subsidiaries, Sony Energy Devices Corp.Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Ken Kutaragi dropped another bomb, telling reporters that although the company is sticking to its intial global target of 6 million PlayStation 3 machines by March, 2007, far fewer machines will be available for the launch dates in Japan and the U.S. because of the production problem. About 400,000 PlayStation 3 machines will be available in the U.S. for the November 17 launch date and 100,000 will be available for Japan on November 11 this year.
The sales delay is caused by a shortage in a key component in the Blu-ray disc laser part of the PS3. "We've been working hard to try to tackle the problem, but we see the delay is inevitable," Kutaragi told reporters.

Does this mean that the launch date will be delayed or fewer consoles? The article isn't too clear on this.
The news said that although no delays are expected for the Japan and US launch of PS3, there will be fewer consoles available as an effect of the production problems.. =(

I've been saying it since E3 06 there was no way Sony would be able to launch in US, Japan, and Europe and I've also been saying there was no possible way for them to manufacture 4 million ps3's by the end of 2006 due to blue ray still being a very new product.
well not surprising that the promised world wide release isn't going to go ahead but what's more ridiculous is sony's assertation that they'll still be able to hit the 6 million unit target by March 07..
are they on some type of special drug that the world hasn't discovered yet?! esp when they announced they can only produce 500,000 units for the US/Japan launch.. that's righ folks.. they plan to produce 5.5 million units in 5 months after launch..

Free road for almost a year, and its selling worse than the original Xbox, and it's STILL missing "those games" that made people around the world buy 100 million PS2 units.

400,000 ps3's on launch in the US. Oh man, this is going to suck, thats worst than what the Xbox 360 had and it was hell trying to track down a 360.
People are going to be disappointed for sure, but the people selling them on ebay won't hahahahahhaha. I'm waiting in line a full week to get mine. Gonna have to with on 400,000 systems!!!!!
I thought most people would wait for price drop before buying ps3. At least that's what i intend to do.

i cant believe it! sony has been talking trash all this time stating how what happened to MS wont happen to them... BULL****! its even worse. do you know how hard its gonna be to get one if each store has only one in their inventory. Plus, you're definitely gonna have stores overpricing it due to high demand... I hope that high price tag works in my favor.
